Excellent display of a great variety of quilts and sculptures, far more extensive than I had anticipated. The descriptions and quotes from creators of each quilt were invaluable in appreciating each work of art. We anticipated needing an hour to view the exhibits and ended up spending almost 3 hours. The exhibits turn over frequently, and the majority of the current exhibits were not part of the permanent collection. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful in directing us to lunch and coffee places. The shop held a great variety of clothes, cards, and gift items. I am not a quilter, but I loved seeing the artwork on display and recommend it highly.

This little quilt museum is truly a treasure. Although small, it beautifully displays quilts in a quiet, restful atmosphere. The displays are on the second floor ( there is an elevator) of this interestingly shaped building two short blocks from the Visitors’ Center of the Lowell National Historic Park. We were treated to a show of the quilts of Sue Garmon, a superb quilter who was a master of appliqué.
As an accountant for NASA, she was required to do a lot of traveling for her job, so she was often doing handwork during those journeys. These quilts were absolutely stunning and covered many different seasons, and piecing techniques.
There was a large room dedicated to social justice quilts. All quilts throughout the museum are exceptionally well labeled with explanations of their construction, inspiration and meaning.
One bonus for quilters is the extensive library where not only may one find a reference for just about any subject related to quilting techniques and history, but there is also an opportunity to purchase books at a low price - even some for free. I walked away with 5 books for $8. The admission to the museum was a flat $9 per person with no discounts. If you are a member it is free.
The gift shop on the first floor has garments, quilts and other items for sale. You could spend a great deal of time browsing in this shop!
A delightful museum - I will be back for sure.

As a quilter I could not wait to visit this lovely little museum. It is small and most of the exhibit space was taken up for a special exhibit. The quilts on display were lovely. I wish I could have seen more from the permanent collection. The ladies in the library were delightful.

Went to see the exhibit of New England quilts. Well worth the visit. And the exhibit was free! So was parking as it was Sunday. Amazing quilts that give inspiration to the quilter. Staff was helpful and extremely nice. Nice gift shop too.

This quilt museum now is a wonderland of beautiful handwork. Now is a large display of gorgeous quilts in a rainbow of colors. Each New England quilt guild has a representative of their guild. They ask you to pick your favorite one. It’s really impossible to pick just one.
Every turn you take you have to say wow!
The volunteers there are really nice and you can tell they love being there. There are a number of things available in the museum shop. The quilted jackets are beautiful.

What a wonderful collection-it focused on silk in quilts from the 1800’s through modern day. If you’re a quilter or can appreciate what goes into quilting, you will enjoy yourself.

My sister is a quilter, so taking her to the New England Quilt Museum when she headed north to visit me was a no-brainer. The quilts displayed were incredible pieces of art and the descriptions and organization perfect. What makes the museum extraordinary, though, is a) the room in which the 'how to' is broken down for visitors in the artist-quilters' own words and explanations, and b) the library which houses a few enthusiastic and expert quilters-volunteers. These two less-than-common additions connected the brilliant artistry of the quilts with human personality and characteristics, leaving me inspired and renewed with joy and awe at peoples' ability to create.

We are so pleased to learn that you enjoyed your visit to the New England Quilt Museum and Library. An important part of our mission is to inspire visitors. Our curator, who is responsible for the exhibitions you enjoyed, and the Library volunteers appreciate your kind feedback. Thank you.

Hello, could you please tell me approximately how much time you would allow for a stop at the museum. Thank you very much.

Thank you for your interest. The majority of visitors to the New England Quilt Museum stay about 60-75 minutes. That allows time for the galleries and Museum Store. Experienced quiltmakers, who enjoy time in the Museum Library, typically stay an additional 30 minutes.

I will be in Boston in October. Is it manageable for me to get to the museum from there? Thanks.

You can do the drive or take the train. When there you may also want to visit the Boott Cotton Mill Museum for a history of the fabric industry in Lowell.
