If you are on a walking tour of the area -stop in and visit. We learned some history and it did not take long.

If you've never been you will be awestruck by the quality of this collection, especially if you get to catch one of their special exhibits. Recently they had a wonderful exhibit of Venice - extraordinary place.

I've been to Lowell many times but somehow missed this museum. I attended a lecture of James Whistler and was told of this place. My son and I visited today and the home is well preserved as an example of a home in the Victoria era. What made it interesting for me is that the owners of the home is the Lowell Art Association. It has been lovingly preserved by artists for one of their own. There is many art works from artists of the same period as Whistler. Also a copy of his most famous painting of his mother. I particularly liked a room of Whistler's etchings. The home also has an artists in residents. We were able to tour that part of the house as well. Behind the main house is another gallery which had a great show of Venetian paintings by Lansil. Although the museum has no Whistler original paintings they do have other art themes that are associated with the artists life. On your visit you will learn a lot about the artists background which will help you appreciate his art more. We took a guided tour which was well worth while.

This is James McNeill Whistler's birthplace. The family left when he was three and when he was 21 he left The US and lived as an expatriate the rest of his life.
The home to furnished with period furniture and is full of art, by Whistler, Arshile Gorky, and local artists, as well as traveling temporary exhibitions.
There is a lovely park next to the house that has benches around a lawn, and a sculpture of Whistler.
The museum is kind of a hidden gem in Lowell, and is well worth a visit.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Whistler House Museum. It's a charming, historic home with a number of interesting paintings. There was a newly renovated/opened floor when I stopped in, and a number of the rooms are maintained as they were in Whistler's time. The often have little receptions with wine, and there's a lovely garden/park to the side of the house. If you're in Lowell, I'd definitely recommend visiting.

Whistler didn't live long in this Lowell house of his birth. Also, the house museum has only one room devoted to Whistler's art (his prints). However, the substantial collection of art that adorns the house walls is well worth a visit. Thankfully, I contracted for a private tour and was delighted by the knowledge and hospitality of my docent guide. In addition, a contemporary art gallery is adjacent to the historic house. Highly recommended!

I just love discovering places like this. After living in Greater Boston for many years and visiting all the world famous museums and historical sites multiple times I'm always on the lookout for someplace new. When I first heard about this museum my expectations were modest. I knew that there were no Whistler paintings here (though it turns out there are many etchings) and he only lived here in his youth, so I was very surprised by the wonderful art collection and beautifully decorated home that I visited today. You can go self-guided for $6, but spring for the $10 deluxe tour with a docent. My friend and I were the only two people on this tour and we certainly got our money's worth from the friendly, knowledgeable gentleman who was our guide. The walls were packed with world class art and the rooms were filled with period furniture. There are two talented artist's studios upstairs that we also got to visit. We also spent some time in a lovely garden courtyard with sunny benches out back. All in all great bang for the buck!

Entering the Whistler House Museum of Art is a delight. The museum is extremely well kept and the art collection is equal to any major museum. The staff could not be friendlier. They made me feel like I was part of the museum family. The tour is filled with historical facts about James A. M. Whistler — Americas most famous artist — the house, and other artists. A very warm and friendly atmosphere!!

The Whistler House is a small lovely museum in Lowell.
They have a permanent collection of some important works, including Aldro Hibbard and John Singer Sargent. The house is beautifully decorated at Christmas time.
We were also able to visit the artist studios located in the house. Our docent was friendly and very informative.

Unless you are into art, I would skip this place. We paid for the self guided tour, I just went to use the restroom. Browsed the paintings, I understand that is not even the original Whistler's Mother hanging here. I found the free park with his statue more interesting, but that's just me. We did get a good restaurant tip for lunch, though.
