This is a truly fabulous museum. Its collections are expansive ranging from Japanese art to an extensive collection of American art and plenty of modern and contemporary are. The collections of international art are amazing, containing works by Picasso, Dali, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Rousseau, Degas, Rothko, Pollock -- you name it! There was also a very interesting and large section on Art Nouveau.

The sculpture garden is most beautiful and very pleasant to walk through, and it contains some intriguing pieces of art (I particularly liked Chloe by Jaume Piensa).

We spent a fair bit of time in the interactive art section, which especially our daughter (10) enjoyed.

And the lunch at the restaurant Amuse was exquisite in a very enjoable setting.

We toured the traveling guitar exhibit with our granddaughter who goes to VCU. Allow about 2 hours to get a really good viewing. This is a beautifully done history on the guitar, the way music evolved as guitars were used solo and with other groups, some good information on the folks who make guitars- especially Gibson and Martin, and musicians from different genres who mastered their skills. The exhibit includes actual guitars of historic significance, all forms of art depicting guitars- paintings, collage, pop art, sculpture, and photography. There are some film and sound clips and even a sofa with two guitars on the wall that are meant for use. We were fortunate that two accomplished players sat down and entertained us for about 15 minutes. My favorite thing was an actual replica of the room where the Richmond Sessions occurred. Go soon! This exhibit leaves March 16, 2023.

We enjoyed the better part of a day in the museum. The collection includes varied types of art from all over the world. My husband especially enjoyed the current exhibit concerning guitars in American art and culture. I thoroughly enjoyed the Tiffany glass and jewelry, and the Faberge (eggs and other artifacts) collections. And, as seniors and college professors, we were charged nothing. Finally, we enjoyed a wonderful a delicious lunch in the dining room that overlooks the grounds.

The VA MFA is an excellent museum with a good variety of art styles from different time periods and places. Although their collection is too extensive for one visit, we did not feel overwhelmed. The building is pretty and the sculpture garden is pleasant. There is something for everyone in this museum.

It was an incredible surprise to see Van gogh, Gaugin and other impresionist artist in this gallery. The generous Faberge exhibit with its sumptious eggs was breathtaking. Degas and Rodin sculptures and Warhol are also present.

The "Storied Strings" special exhibit is awesome. It closes in March 2023, I think, so don't miss your chance. Beautiful guitars on display, as well as artwork featuring guitars on loan from a variety of sources in the U.S. and Europe. Allow at least an hour and a half, more if you plan to visit the rest of the museum.

OMG….Where to begin…First off, set aside plenty of time—a minimum of four hours, and don’t be surprised if it turns into a whole day. This is a world class museum. We started with the superb Art Nouveau collection which is rivaled (in my opinion) only by the Musée de l'École de Nancy. If you are a lover of Art Nouveau objects, this museum is a must. The Grand Piano is a show stopper in and of itself. The Tiffany lamp collection was off-the-charts. Amazing designs of dragon flies, peacocks, autumn leaves, fish wisteria…..and on and on. We were there on a Sunday and the museum was surprisingly uncrowded, so we were able to browse the collection at a leisurely pace. The Art Deco collection is equally beautiful. I was mesmerized by a 1929 “Egyptian” Art Deco clock.

The real surprise was the collection of Imperial Russia Faberge eggs: FIVE of them!!! They were completely unexpected and a total shock to see. I honestly thought the only way I was ever going to have a chance to see them was to visit Saint Petersburg, Russia (sadly, a very remote possibility now). Not only were there imperial eggs, but an extensive collection of Jewelry, picture frames, cigarette cases, cane handles and many other objects from Imperial Russia. Amazing to think many of these items were personally handled by Czar Nicholas II himself. I had previously seen color photographs of several of the eggs and picture frames but never did I expect to see them so close to home.

Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, Matisse, Eakins, John Singer Sargent are but a few—and I mean few— of the major artists represented here. Take your time and plan your visit. It’s spread out and will require a bit of effort to see it all, so taking a break at the cafe (as we did) is a good idea if you want to pause for a while.

This museum is a destination and highly recommended. We will definitely return.
