Amazing experience. If you were to stay there the whole day you still wouldn’t be able to see everything. I highly recommend going to the gardens, really beautiful but you still learn a lot about the XIX century.

Hugely disappointed by our visit to this museum. Not all that much about the history or Atlanta, and an over focus on racism and social justice. Our visit started with a 10 minute or so video on Stone Mountain, and how the carvings of Confederate leaders is still protected by GA law, then proceeded to a display area, which was interesting. The Georgia cyclorama from years ago was restored and is on view there, and starts with an overlay presentation about…you guessed it..social justice. The Snow House was actually very interesting, but it alone was enough to save from a one star review. This museum is located in a VERY wealthy area of Atlanta, of course. I will not bother going here or recommending. It’s just too overfocused on one issue, and not the history.

Great place to visit! Very well organized, clean, beautiful center. The area is big. I spend around 2,5 hours exploring. Swan House is located on the property, and I recommend visiting it too.

I've been here before but it has been years. I came to see what they did with the Cyclorama after they moved it from Grant Park. Must admit they did an excellent job. I also visited the Payne Olympic exhibit and the exhibit on Atlanta history. I skipped some exhibits because I didn't have a lot of time and I chose not to go outside to the gardens and other buildings because of the heat.

I did not explore the grounds but focused on the Civil War gallery and the cyclorama. Very balanced approach to the war and fully explained the conflict with an obvious emphasis on Atlanta.

Spent 3 hours here, I’m glad In picked this place. It has everything you want to see when you visit a new city. It has great history exhibits, it has an exhibit on local sports, native culture, it has a beautiful walking park area, a kids playground in the park, and a coffee place to get energy for whatever you do next. The cyclorama is well made, the exhibits are very educational and good quality.

This ended up being the favorite Atlanta experience for both my husband and I. We absolutely intend to return on our next Atlanta trip.
I had no idea how much there is to see here when I booked the tickets — it’s quite good value for the money! Plus, after dealing with the stress of parking at the aquarium the day before, we really appreciated easy free parking. There’s so much here that I recommend budgeting no fewer than three hours; you could easily spend an entire day just at this one site.
We really enjoyed every exhibit that we viewed, but here are a few favorites for us:
The cyclorama had an excellently nuanced video to accompany it that went over interpretations of history and how they influence both the creation of historical art as well as its reception. Really interesting! And the cyclorama itself is an amazing work of art to experience. They do a great job of educating about the piece.
The Voices of Atlanta exhibit was quite interesting. We particularly liked the interactive touch screen display that examines demographic changes and more.
The Swan House was gorgeous! It was just so neat to be able to walk through a 1920s house that still has its original furnishings. We chose to walk through on our own rather than wait for the guided tour; the two employees we encountered there were both friendly and shared interesting information about the house with us.
The gardens were so lush and lovely to walk through. It was really pleasant to take a break and sit on a bench for a bit as well.
We ate lunch at Souper Jenny, which is located within the main building. It was $18 apiece for our lunches (you could definitely do lynch there a little cheaper if you wanted), and was good value. Fantastic food! The soups in particular blew us away; I regret not buying one of the cookbooks.

Well organized so you can skip things you aren't interested in. Space is tight though. When it is busy, you bump into people.

We only had time to visit the Swan House and are very glad there was a tour given by a very knowledgeable guide. He knew details about family members and their lifestyles as well as interior-design details. I wish the statues in the garden were cleaned up and the hours extended so out of towners can have more time to visit the museum. The family has deep roots in the city, so, it should be more accessible to everyone to learn about their history.

Does general admission include entrance to the smith house / farm and the swan house?
how many hours would you dedicate to visiting the whole complex?
Rosemarie L
Florida58 bidrag
Admission includes all of those locations on the property along with the Mitchell House (off property - separate ticket valid 7 days after purchase). I was there for about 3 hours but would’ve liked another two to see everything. With the Mitchell house ticket I would suggest planning another day. I was unaware of that ticket and was unable to go before I left.

Do you have to buy tickets in advance or can I purchase them when we get there?

You can purchase at the door. But I would recommend purchasing cyclorama tickets in advance because there are only so many viewings during the day.

If you be a combined ticket, is it possible to visit the Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House on consecutive days or does it have to be on the same day?
Franklinmacd
Charlottetown, Canada932 bidrag
I believe we were given a 5 day period to visit both. We did not go to Margaret Mitchell's house but from what I understand it is actually just an apartment within a house and you only visit the apartment as the rest of the house is residential properties. For us it was not worth it.
Is it free to visit Swan House directly without getting admission from Atlanta History Center?

Is there plenty of parking close to the museum and a place to drop people off at? Also, are there plenty of places to sit inside the museum? My mother has Authritis and has trouble walking long distances.

Plenty of parking (they have a garage and you can drop off a person at the door or close by).

Do you have to do a tour to see the outside of the swan house?

Palm Beach Gardens, FL165 bidrag
You do not. However, the inside and the history is very interesting, and the people there to answer question take on the role of the architect, and others, and it was one of the more enjoyable house tours we have ever experienced. You are free to wander and can engage them as much or as little as you like. But I recommend asking the architect a question, as he has tons of knowledge and insight to share. In either case, enjoy!

There a some ramps but there are elevators in the building. Sorry for the delay in response. The building is old but they are current with codes.
