This two floor museum tucked into an old building in Frederick, Maryland, houses a wonderful series of displays on Civil War Medicine. Jonathan Letterman, M.D. emerges as a hero of modern military medicine, developing the triage system and doubtless saving countless lives of wounded soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies. Exhibits document 19th Century medical education, Union draft exams, the use of anesthesia, the development of prostheses for amputees and of plastic surgery, the development of ambulances -- a host of medical aspects in a bloody war where more combatants died of disease than on the battlefield. A helpful volunteer retired doctor provided helpful commentary.
Some visitors might find aspects of the exhibition gruesome, but on the whole it's good history and a tribute to medical attempts to save lives and ease suffering. Worth a detour.

The museum was in the centre of Frederick town. Exhibits were informative and innovative and dispelled many Civil War myths relating to treatment of casualties in 1860 to 65. Staff were knowledgeable and friendly. A gem of a museum

Learned a lot that I didn't know. Got to read actual letters from the front! Did the self directed tour - took under 2 hours. Would recommend this look at the civil war.

Excellent, informative museum, especially if you have a guided tour. Civil War medicine was much more professional than I had thought; unlike the amputation scene in Gone With the Wind, 95 percent of amputations were done with anesthesia. I learned that emergency medicine (EMTs, ambulances) began in the Civil War with John Lettermann, who created a system of immediate care on the battlefield and a system for moving soldiers, new in warfare. Exhibits are informative and easily accessible to the non-scientist. More on Union than Confederate medicine, in part because Confederate records were destroyed at the end of the war.

Fascinating and interesting look at medicine and the advances achieved during a critical time in American history. Even how some things are still in place to this day

My wife and I arrived earlier than necessary in Frederick for a planned event and had several hours to fill. We came across this museum and it ended up being the highlight of our visit. We spent about 90 minutes and found the museum to be really well focused on teaching visitors about Civil War medicine, with no political or moral agenda. Exhibits are comfortable to observe and read, and one can learn a great deal in a short visit.

A friendly and helpful staff greet visitors to this museum in Historic Downtown Frederick detailing the advances in battlefield medicine and casualty management during the Civil War. Advances in warfare technology and the usual diseases of the day placed great demands on the medical practices of the day and required significant changes which are well explained using interactive and static displays. Includes displays on first aid, casualty evacuation, hospital wards, herbal treatments, patent medicines and diseases from fevers to the social kind. Exhibits include the stories of women and children who served in uniform and medical education and training. The exhibits end at a tribute to the modern combat medics.

Very good museum on the medical advances that took place during the Civil War. Of particular interest because our ancestor was a physician during the war.

This our first visit to this museum, which was recommended to us by highway Welcome Center staff. It's right in Frederick, so it's a bit congested in the area. We found it to be very interesting/informative, and really put a perspective on Civil War medical care, and advancements that were made because of it. It also dispelled the myth(s) about medical "butchery", and how/why things were done back then. We would recommend a visit if you're in the area.

My wife and I had the pleasure of touring the Pry House on the Antietam battlefield recently. Rachel was an exceptional hostess during our visit. Rachel could not have been more accommodating, answering our many questions as to the house history and exhibits there. We also had the added pleasure of touring the large, well preserved barn on the property, which was used as a field hospital during and after the battle there. Rachel was very passionate with her talk and her level of knowledge and delivery was very admirable. After finishing up our next day at Harpers Ferry - we approached Mr. Chris Reed, the Tours and Coordinator for the Museum complex, for a tour of the site in Frederick, MD the very next day on our travel back home. Chris was able to entertain us, at very short notice, and we made the trip there. The museum location in Frederick, which served as an embalming and mortuary during the civil war period was also exceptional. Great care and talent have been used to display and re-enact period era civil war medicine in painstaking detail. We spent well over an hour there and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Chris also made us feel right at home. We very much appreciated the friendly, non-hurried atmosphere and the high level of professionalism. We highly recommend both locations for a visit.
