Great for history buffs and nature enthusiasts. Amazing large cliff dwelling and short easy nature trail. Trail is perfect for little kids!

A very short walk along the trail brings you to an unobstructed view of this old cliff dwelling. I always find them so fascinating. It's a short drive off the freeway and the trail is mostly level. One side area has a few stairs. The visitor center had some great gifts.
There is some shade along the trail which helped on a 110 degree day.

I consider this an absolute must--it's only $10 per person, and my whole car got in at no cost at all because one person had the lifetime access pass. Beyond the affordability is just the fact that this is a piece of culture and history that the US has tried to destroy, and I'm so glad this spot managed to survive. I'm glad we are finally protecting it.

It's very easy to do--the path is paved, and I imagine the only reason they recommend close-toed shoes is because they have snakes and scorpions (though I didn't see them myself). It was the most handicap friendly site I saw out there. There are trails and things there as well, though unfortunately I couldn't convince my party that we had time to do it. I'd love to go back for that.

Definitely a highlight of the trip.

Why? Why build an apartment way up there on the side of a cliff? The world may never know. It's interesting to see and walk the grounds, but unlike similar places like Mesa Verde, the actual structure itself is not accessible to the public. But, if you are in the South Sedona area, it's worth a small detour.

We drove up from Scottsdale to see this monument. There is not much to see here. There is the dwelling in the rocks which is neat, but that is all. It must be viewed from a distance. We did not feel it was worth the drive which took over 3 times as long as we spent here.

These cliff dwellings were amazing. I only wish they could come up with a safe way to get up closer to them without allowing inconsiderate people from damaging them. Maybe an enclosed telescoping man-lift operated by a certified operator and free time tickets could be provided for groups of four people at a time? The interactive displays and informational signs provide great information for visitors. Take the time to listen to the informational display at the end of the trail. There were some shaded areas along the walking trail to get out of the heat and sun, and the restrooms were clean and cool, no pit toilets. The site is only about 10 minutes from the exit on I-17, so it makes for a good place to stop if you aren't in a hurry. We had some time to kill on the way to Phoenix, so it worked well for my family. You can spend as little as 30 minutes there and it will be worth it.

In our last full day in Arizona, we visited Montezuma Well National Monument, Montezuma Castle National Monument and Tuzigoot National Monument. This spot was pretty spectacular to visit, although it really doesn't take that long. After going through the Visitor Center and the short museum-section inside, you proceed down a short loop to access the best view of the pueblos built into cliff sections. For approximately 300 years, starting around 1,100 AD, Sinagua people made their home here. At one time, the dwellings here were built over 5 to 6 levels and had many rooms. You can't go up into the dwellings or tour the rooms. You have to be content to look at them from below.

The parking lot for Montezuma Castle Monument isn't real big and the Visitor Center/Museum is rather small. The day we visited, it was quite crowded and parking can be an issue as summer season nears. I wasn't as impressed with the Museum exhibits as I was with some of the other National Monuments that we visited. I was also very sad to see that many of the trees had been vandalized and were covered up with burlap with signs explaining why they were covered.

One good thing is that a $10 ticket will also get you into Tuzigoot National Monument. So save your receipts.

Plan this into your vacation. A must see. Here you will see the remnants of the castle (apartment building) built into a cave which held 20 rooms. Multiple families lived here. They used ladders to get up to the cave. Very well preserved. A short nice walkway takes you to the ruins. You are not able to get close but there is no reason to. You can view it clearly from the path. On a time restraint? If you had to you can do this in 15 minutes.

Enjoyable time walking on the paved path to the cliff dwellings and around the loop. 5 story cliff dwellings that you can view from below, cannot walk up or close to them. there is a gift shop, location that sells National Passes and restroom. On the loop, you walk by the river, educational signs to read and we had a ranger provide education while we were there.

After 9 years we returned with adult kids and a granddaughter, and had a perfect weather day to do so. The National Park Pass gained us admission, and the crowds were light on a Friday. The stroll on very well maintained property was often in the shade, and the sun lighted the walls brilliantly. This was our first stop of the three on our loop, including Montezuma Well and Tuzigoot.
