We hiked to the Dipsea from the Pantoll Campground/parking lot on Mt. Tam via 1/2 mile on Old Mine Trail, then down the Dipsea to Muir Woods, about 3 miles. Beautiful views, in and out of the forest and some open areas, where we saw lots of the rare Mission Blue Butterflies. Some very steep drops down to Muir Woods.

We hiked a portion of the trail between Muir Woods Road and the TCC Trail. The section near Muir Woods Road had been substantially rerouted from what is shown on the map and necessitated walking along Muir Woods Road for a bit.

I did this trail with a friend- we started down Dipsea, then continued on to Stinson Beach, and then came back to the parking lot on the steep ravine trail. It was 7+ miles total and I can tell you that the way down was pretty much all down hill and the way back was alllllll uphill, but it was a gorgeous trail. Even with a ton of fog! I loved it and would do it again.

We started on the Dipsea Trail at Stinson beach, changed to Steep Ravine and came back down via Matt Davis. Dipsea as well as the other two trails are amazingly beautiful - forests, fern forests, streams, small waterfalls - just beautiful! It is a bit of a hike - and if you are not a fairly strong hiker, you may need to rest along the way. At one point, you'll need to climb up a short ladder to continue on the trail. You may want to bring a picnic lunch as there were great places to sit (on a fallen log or a rock overlooking the stream) and look at the scenery.

Started at the dipsea steps in Mill valley. Needed directions a few times because there was very few people on the trails. Trail is poorly marked at some areas. I didn't even know where the stairs started were or continued in Mill valley. They are hidden in some between houses. Also the trail stops and continues among some subdivisions after you cross a road and is not marked very well. I stopped at Muir woods and decided to walk there because of time restraints. When I tried to go back on the dipsea trail I had a hard time finding my route so I ended up having to take the main roads which were busy and not safe for walking. Overall it was a very cool trail that was filled with lots of hills and beautiful overlooks. I wish I would have had more time and wouldn't have gotten so lost.

I loved the Dipsea Trail loop which was beautiful and had a fair amount of elevation gain. It is a 2 - 3 hour loop hike that weaves through beautiful stunning forest on the California coast. I would encourage doing this hike during the week to avoid the crowds.

For those of you who are visiting Northern California and want to get some hiking in, this is a great "survey" hike to get a feel for the area and experience a variety of environments northern California offers. There will be parts of the hike that are exposed dirt trails, parts on a hillside, parts under the cover of huge redwoods and parts near the ocean. You can do the hike in yoga pants, shorts or jeans (depending on the time of year) and in sneakers, hiking boots or sandals (although the sandals should have some good tread). The hike weaves through all these including creeks. Probably the biggest challenge for those will limited mobility or strength would be a large wood ladder one has to climb. If you don't feel you can do this, it's easy enough to turn around and enjoy the hike back! there is a picnic area mid-way to stop and snack if you choose, and includes a ranger station. I believe some even start their hike here as there is parking.

If you come to Muir Redwood park , this place is adds to it . The entire stretch is a feast for the senses . The lovely trees , and the surroundings are full of nature and it’s creatures . The birds and the occasional rabbits are welcome sights - Stay on the trail and keeping silence has great rewards . Everyone must come here !

Our trail started off from Matt Davis trail to Pantoll to Ranger station then down towards dipsea ravine. Matt Davis trail is well shaded with high incline. Saw about 3 deers on our way up. Once your at the top our view was beautiful view of the city and Stinson beach, also it was nice to be above the clouds. Continued our trail down to the ranger station/camp ground there we picked up a map. Then headed down to do the dipsea ravine hike which is now down hill. It was also well shaded and car across a wooden ladder that you climb down from. Met lots of wonderful people along the way who offered food and water I swear hikers are one of the best ppl on earth!!! Once we finished that trail we continued towards Stinson beach in which we looped back around to where our car was. Once we got to our car we changed clothes and headed towards the beach to grab a bite and relax. Things I learned on this trip is if your going to make a full day like we did hike/beach time. I suggest you park your car at the beach walk towards the trails and start your journey so you can end up back at the beach. (We parked by the fire station where the Matt Davis trail starts so next time we will park at the beach) There are two openings one in the back of the fire station and one in the front around the corner. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks/sandwiches because this is long hike. Bring a visor or hat (if your like me and easily get sun burned) bring a light jacket or sweater it’s chilly in the morning and in the shaded parts but you got hot fast because of hiking. Also put on sun screen very important I totally forgot and got sun burned lol. Other than that it was an amazing hike felt really good afterwards also my legs were sore the next day!! Happy hiking!!

Beautiful trail. The area near the trailhead above Stinson Beach is spectacular. You walk through a wet forest and it then dries up as you go higher. The trail opens up to spectacular views of Stinson Beach and the coast. Beware of poison oak near wild berries. The berries were great. Poison Oak was not. No dogs allowed on the trail is a bummer for me but I get it. The trail is pristine.
