Booked a massage for myself, my daughter, and a facial for my teenager. Treatments were close to $200. You spend very little time in a waiting room. Then you are escorted to a hotel room with a massage table. Hawaiian music is playing through a portable speaker. Based on the website, I was expecting more of a "spa" experience with pools, exfoliation, maybe some relaxing time afterwards. Nope. Not even allowed to shower. You are rushed at the end to leave, but honestly there was no where to go, as the staff makes sure you hustle out.
In the end, the massage was nice but I felt as though a bait and switch. I wish I'd been informed that they weren't providing a high level of facilities for the cost.

This is hard for me to write…I don’t leave negative reviews; in fact this may be my first. But I was thoroughly disappointed this morning after months of anticipation, and I can’t just get over it. I just want to write this review so others may be spared the same mistake.
As I mentioned, I booked my treatment (the tropical revitalization) months ago. When I booked I asked about the terme, which is the water portion of the spa, and was told that it was possible they would be reopened dependent on the Covid situation, but obviously nobody knew. Since the terme was a big part of the experience, I thought it was odd that prices were not discounted to reflect the drastic cut in amenities, but alas, I booked anyway and kept my fingers crossed.
Fast forward to today. I was instructed not to check in at the spa, but at a new location named Maholu or something like that. I and two other gentleman were searching around aimlessly for check in. After several minutes, we finally asked somebody, and were told check-in was inside the tiny retail location to the left. After months of anticipating a spa experienced ranked as one of the best by Cindy-Nast, I was instead shown to a “relaxation area” that would not look out of place in any Massage Envy. I fixed a cup of tea and sat down to ponder why on earth I was asked to check in half an hour early, as nobody bothered to ask what areas I wanted to work on. I literally just sat there with nothing to do but drink cold tea (why was it cold?) for 30 minutes. The spa music was even too loud to relax to, presumably because they were trying to mask the sound of the shopping area right on the other side of the door. It didn’t drown out the noise of the nine other people waiting with me, or the newlywed who was relaying her entire medical history to the staff in the relaxation room though.
My masseuse arrived at exactly 11, and we walked down a very dark hallway that had a number of fake candles lighting the floor. They may have been going for a relaxing vibe, but because the hallway had no up lighting, it came across as they were attempting to hide the fact that they were just leading you to a hotel room and hadn’t even bothered to change the color of the walls.
We then walked into an almost empty hotel room, identical to the entry-level one in which I was staying, except mine had better views. There was a dresser holding the supplies and a massage table. Nothing else. Not even a plant.
The massage began, and the service was excellent. We ended right on time. My masseuse was sweet, and even gave me a hug at the end, which I found a little odd, but adorable.
I did not say anything to any of the staff about my unpleasant experience, because none of this was any of their fault. My problem lies solely with Managemnet. If you have a Michelin Star restaurant, move it next door to a Denny’s, nix all appetizers and dessert, but insist on charging the same rate that you did prior to the move, that’s poor Management.
I’ve paid similar rates to what I paid today at Waldorf Astoria’s in Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, and Mexico. I would be thrilled if I paid $100 in my hometown to get the massage I got today, but to have paid four times that much and receive an experience like this from a Waldorf felt wrong, especially since this was not advertised when I booked, and management made no outreach prior to my arrival. The pictures on the website still show the 20,000 sq ft facility. It felt like a bait and switch.
I’ve wanted to check this spa off my list for a long time. I don’t consider it checked off, since I did not get to experience the spa at all. However, after this I doubt I will give it a second chance.
If you are coming to Grand Wailea soon, please verify whether the spa is reopened or not. If it is not, save yourself hundreds of dollars and find a masseuse that will come to your room. You’ll probably have better views from there anyway.

Smooth check in with Putri, who confirmed my pre trip my Covid test and temperature at check in. Mask required except when facing down during treatment. Helpful locker room attendant, who providing sandals and a robe (yes you can also shower prior to treatment). Relaxing sitting area overlooking the Grand Wailea fountains. Blissful massage with Misty - I HIGHLY recommend her- she has her own unique style and is a highly experienced practitioner. Knew exactly what my body needed. So good I went back for a second time! PS they also offer couples massage.

I attended this Spa in Nov of 2019 and had the best Spa/Massage experience I've ever had. It was because of this my wife and I were excited to return in March of 2021. My experience this time was the worst. The male attendant was distracted, inattentive and too preoccupied with his cell phone to provide me with proper instructions and help. I had no slippers in my locker. I was never offered water or any other refreshments. After my massage I was never told the showers were available, nor was I offered any toiletries or hair products, so I left without showering. They charged full price and had none of the pools, tubs, or any other accessory services available due to Covid. I understand this but lets at least keep the same service, kindness, and attentiveness. During the massage the masseuse told me repeatedly I should have got the 90 minute massage instead of the 50. Seriously? They charged a 20% gratuity up front and had I known the service had fallen off a cliff I would have never paid it upfront. As a fellow Hilton Hotel owner I was very disappointed in my fellow hoteliers spa.

We booked a couples massage*(try it...its only another $10) we got a CBD oil upgrade to our massage, the husband got the traditional Hawaiian style massage-I opted for the hot stones massage. It was just Glorious! We arrived an hour early and got a locker. A scrub(clothing optional and dont worry there is a men’s and ladies side). Hot tubs, salt water hot baths, Japanese style hot tub and cold plunge. Water, snacks everywhere and super nice staff. It ended up costing us a little over $500 for us both.

Incredible experience at Spa Grande. From the minute you arrive, the staff makes you feel at ease.
First hour is spent in the hydratherme area - lovely to help you get into the spa mindset. This portion of the spa experience is gender segregated as it is clothing optional. Most women wore bathing suits the day I went (I did not), but you really should do what is most comfortable for you. I would say not wearing a suit improves the experience, especially the exfoliation by an attendant before your treatment.
I next did the macadamia nut indulgence massage and body wrap. Literally the best spa treatment I have ever had, and I am an experienced spa-goer. My treatment specialist (Allison) even rolled up little hand towels to place under outer pecs to relieve pressure on my chest while laying on my stomach. I get massages monthly and no one has ever done this for me, despite always mentioning my discomfort (those darn massage tables should take into account busts!). Allison was a healer and a genius with her hands.
I finished my treatment with a pedicure expertly done by my manicurist Andrea. Despite being the last appointment of the day she was methodical and took her time to make the pedicure perfect.
I very highly recommend this spa - it is well worth the $$$ if you want to feel truly relaxed on your vacation!

This is my second visit to the spa. Choose this spa over the others on the island because of all the beautiful amenities included. The staff is top notch and the baths are better than any other spot on the island in my opinion.
All that said, the Pala’au Journey was a MISS. The massage itself was good, but this is a strangely-conceived treatment. I went in expecting two separate services… A massage and a cocoon. What I ended up getting was basically two massages… The second with a slightly heavier blanket on top. It was just kind of weird. I definitely would not do it again and I would spend my money on something else. Don’t get me wrong… I’m not complaining too hard about an extra long massage but it just wasn’t a great service.

My daughter and I have been coming to Spa Grande since it opened, most recently using the Hana Hou two-fer coupon in the Hawaiian Airlines magazine. This special typically offers an hour in the Terme baths, a loofah scrub, lunch or exercise classes, and a treatment (massage or facial). It's a great deal. We found the attendants helpful, friendly and filled with welcoming aloha. The baths had changed from salt-based to essential oils-based, and although we liked the salt baths better, the oils were fine. We noticed the rain showers were both out of order, and some of the lights flickered and needed changing, but the old gal still was elegant and comfortable. Many of the guests we spoke with were long time clients, and a number of the staff have been there 10 to 20+ years - that says something about management. It's a good gig. Melea provided a lovely facial and helpful information on calming down my rosacea. We were not hurried in the least, and were able to enjoy the hot tub, cold plunge, baths and Japanese showers after our treatment. There is also a sauna and steam room to enjoy. Do eat before you arrive, as snacks are limited to apples, flavored waters, and wheat based party mix and granola (caution for those with gluten sensitivities). An annoying shift over the years is more and more women are wearing bathing suits in the spa, which just doesn't seem right to me. Towels and robes are plentiful. There is a kamaiina rate for Hawaii residents for the Terme baths and pools.

I love spa grande and I am so glad I was able to take some time to enjoy this place for a few hours on my recent trip. Only thing is I wish it could have been longer! Also I love the healing waters of Maui it was my favorite part especially the clouds bath..I had to get some to bring home with me... I miss it already and wish I had bought more since I loved it so much I shared most of it with my family who has joint pain as I think this particular bath salt will really help them.
10 out of 10 spa a must treat if you are near the Wailea on an upcoming trip.

my sons and I made a visit to spa one afternoon. Upon arrival they greet you with smile and you can spend the whole day in the spa area. Upon entering the spa area David the manager offers you the opportunity to rub dead cells off of your body. There are different tubs with different minerals for your body. The water falls are great and your shoulders will relax under water fall. When it is time for your massage, they usher you to second floor with magnificent view of the pools and ocean. Plenty of fruits, munchies, honey-mango iced tea and water. Very professional masseuse, very clean and sanitary environment. It is excellent experience for individuals, couples, family or friends.

Can a couple conceivably have sex in the private treatment room (the one with the private tub)?
Does the spa also give you acess to the resort pools and gym ? Or is it limited to the spa area ?

You can come before your treatment and then stay all day if you want. You can even leave and come back later in the same day of your treatment.

When I visited 21 years ago, most people did not wear swim suits in the water therapy area. What is the case today?

I found that the majority of the women wore swimsuits, but there were a few women who did not. I suspect it may be related to both comfort/familiarity with the practice and age, as the women who were naked were likely older than 50 (I'm 40).

We will be staying at a condo nearby with another couple and would like to schedule a "spa day" for massages and to enjoy the other spa and hotel amenities together. Three questions: 1. Is hotel pool access included in the cost of a massage &/or other spa services? 2. Are there co-ed amenities/facilities in the spa (i.e. waiting room/relaxation area, jacuzzi, other)? 3. Is there a bar or other food/drink service within the spa? Thanks!

The pool access is not included in the cost of the spa packages. The only co-ed facility is a lanai you can wait on. Their are separate rooms for men and women. I'm not sure about food and drinks. They do have complimentary flavored teas and water while you are in the spa. If you go, go early and enjoy the use of the thermal baths and different types of spas. This is included in the cost of a treatment and I actually liked it the best. There is a waterfall massage, 7 different baths, a Japanese spa and more.

Hello, Do I understand the reviews correctly that there are two sets of Roman baths, Maui and Japanese areas ?and they are gender separate? So couples cannot enjoy these together? We are also considering a couples package, but wanted to be able to spend our pre-treatment time together too. Thanks for any information you can provide .

The areas are separate. You will not be able to spend pre-treatment time together. But you do meet up before your treatment for water and relaxation overlooking the ocean. You won't need the time together :) it's actually very enjoyable just being off on your own soaking in the specialized tubs. It goes quick so make sure to enjoy it all.

Hi Terri,
In order to use the spa (steam rooms, pools, sauna, etc.) you have to buy a 2-hour spa pass that includes an exfoliation treatment as well. You also need to book an appointment for your 2-hour session as they don't allow for "drop-ins". You can call before you travel, or wait until you are onsite. One tip... don't miss the water elevator in the big pool!! I missed it on our first trip but found out about it the next time we were there. It's unique! Hope this helps! Aloha!

As mentioned above, the massage is included in the price. The spa is undergoing renovations and treatment rooms have been temporarily relocated to another part of the hotel. Terms and new spa are schedule to open Dec. 21, 2015 (last I knew). The Terme hydrotherapy circuit, body scrub, sauna, steam room and pools are wonderful and really help to relax you and help you to enjoy the massage from the moment it starts - no 10 minutes of unwinding needed. Be sure to arrive 1 hour before treatment to enjoy these waters.
