It's a very long beautiful beach in North New Zealand, and if you are in the area, it's worth visiting. You can take your care and drive along the beach. There weren't many places that was signed to the beach but google and you will have a nice experience.

It feels like you've been driving through the wilderness for ages and then you're left speechless! You've never seen anything like it, this vastness, endless beach and sea and a feeling of freedom. Fantastic, sensational!
If possible, drive at low tide, notice where the exit is and then just step on the gas!
It's actually indescribable!

We visited here as part of our tour to Cape Reinga. we walked along the beach and observed a fellow and his friends fishing with a drone and taking the line out 1.5 kilometers into the sea. the fish he caught were abundant. The walk along the beach was quite pleasant.

We joined a tour that included a drive along 90 Mile Beach and so glad we did. A bus driving on a beach - who would have thought. So called apparently because it took three days at a standard 30 miles per day for a horse to ride end to end ... only horses on sand go a lot slower, so it's actually only 55 miles long. The sea was spectacular when we visited as were the views. Highly recommended.

Great expanse of beach. Surprisingly a lot to see other than just endless sand. There's a lot of sea life washed up to check out and there's always somebody fishing or gathering to chat to. Definitely worth the effort - but only in a 4WD and stick to the road rules

We were staying in Ahipari and found the entrance to the beach which is at the very southern end, you can then head North and enjoy all that 90 mile beach has to offer. Don’t fret about whether you have an AWD or 4WD, the sand is compact and safe and as long as you arrive a couple of hours after high tide, you are all ready to go. Enjoy…….

Nice to find somewhere to park and just walk along part of the beach and just reflect. So peaceful. Even though it's not 90 miles long, still worth a look. Can tak a bus tour to drive on the beach or a 4wd vehicle, but caution alot of vehicles not insured to drive on here.

We stayed in Ahipara over looking Shipwreck Bay and Ninety Mile Beach, we didn’t get any swimming done in there but the beach itself was lovely and at this end of the beach had heaps of places to explore with all the rock pools.
Managed to catch a beautiful sunset here also.
We did do another stop at part of Ninety Mile Beach and it was off the main road and along gravel for awhile, it was secluded and beautiful but looked rough with some mini sand dune type things.

We are bringing a campervan up to fish the Snapper Bonanza. Can we park our campervan on the road and access the beach on foot with rods etc?

Hi
Is there anywhere that does just a tour along 90 mile beach? All I can find is day tours that include other things. We have a hire car and want to dive to Cape Reinga but do not want to drive along the beach.
Thank you
Skrevet 27. april 2019
No, all the tours start at Kaitaia and return in the late afternoon. There is plenty of time to walk out to the lighthouse on these trips and the BBQ on the beach before you get there is nice. We spoke to several people who drove up and back and it is a tiring trip so have a day off and see the scenery and learn a bit about the area as the guides are very knowledgeable. Although dune surfing is on offer we just watched! The trips are reasonably priced and good value for money.

This ninety miles beach literally is a "highway" where cars can run (allowed) up to 100km/h. Probably it is unwise to let the dog free running and playing without leash.

Can you drive the 90 mile beach yourself? If so what do you need to do it? Thank you. Tom
Skrevet 30. april 2016
Yes, you can.
There is coverage for emergency calls if something happens and you need help, like your vehicle gets stuck but as long as you take note of tides.
Low tide is the safest ( only!) time to attempt it, also greatest probability of other travelers as well.
Sand is really soft at the top and was doable on the bike but would've been easier at low tide, we rode two up on KLR 650 at high tide and had to stop for a bit due to engine temp getting high.
Exiting is an issue but if you have done soft sand before its pretty much the same everywhere.
Just make sure you tell someone when you're doing it and when you expect to complete it so you're expected at a certain time just for the safety aspect.

From Paihia to Cape Reinga, with a short visit to Ninety Mile Beach, and return. Is it feasible as a day-trip, with a rental car (2WD)?
We plan to go mid of Feb 2016.
Thanks!
Skrevet 5. februar 2016
Absolutely.
The beach is only usable for a car when low tide, just be careful of soft sand.
The beach has few access roads so make sure of your exit or just drive back the same way after visiting beach.
Also consider stopping at dunes for sandboarding if you have kids or you feel like something different.
You can do 90 mile on way up or down depending on tide.
Either way all up return can be done 8 hrs for good enough to maybe 10 hrs if you plan on spending extra time at sandboarding. But 8 will be good.

It is possible to drive a campervan all the way to Cape Regina? What are the pros and cons of doing so?
Skrevet 30. november 2015
We did a day tour up to the cape but that bus was 4x4. As you exit the beach up the top you need to literally drive up along a creek for some kilometres. Not sure how a camper would cope!?

Is there a tour bus that leaves Auckland to the Ninety Mile Beach tour?
Skrevet 3. mars 2015
From Auckland to Kaitaia it is aprox 4.5 hours.Once at Kaitaia there are plenty of bus company's that go up 90 mile beach to the Cape.
