Very well-kept park. Beautiful and tranquil. Enjoy learning the history behind the native American mounds and the rituals.

Conceived in 1999, Ocmulgee Heritage Trail is the jewel of the park system in Macon, Georgia. It is 12 miles long and flanks both sides of the Ocmulgee River through downtown Macon, then connects the historic downtown area with nearby neighborhoods, the beautiful and historic Riverside Cemetery and Rose Hill Cemetery and two of Bibb County's largest public parks--Amerson River Park and Central City Park. The trail also connects visitors to Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, which explores 10,000 years of Southeastern Native American culture along the banks of then Ocmulgee River, and the National Park Service Museum. For hikers and bikers, this is a picturesque way to see the city and its environs. City officials are planning to extend the trail from Macon to Milledgeville, a distance of 33 miles. Trailhead parking is available at Riverside Cemetery, Spring Street Bridge and Central City Park. Riverside Cemetery can be accessed from Exit 1A from I-16 East. Turn right on Spring Street, then right on Riverside Drive, then right at Madison Street. Trailhead parking is on the right.

I do this trail about three times a week, there and back. It is fun, quiet and safe. See the review for the Ocmulgee National Park. Once the Interstate construction is finished, the Amerson Water Park will be connected with the Spring Street Landing and the Ocmulgee National Park via the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail. Right now you can take the paved pathway from Spring Street to the Ocmulgee National Park. The construction has affected the path but if you're patient and careful you'll be OK.
The trail is about three miles long to the Great Temple Mound and about 3.5 to the museum at the Ocmulgee National Park.
On foot it is about an hour at a steady quick pace. It is 10 to 15 minutes on a bike. The grade is nearly level, never strenuous. Insects are not a problem but that is subjective.

My grandson (5 yr.) has done this with me several times and has no problem. It does take him about 20 Minutes.

Be sure to stop and read the stations along the way and rest as you need.

Sadly we visited during the Government shut down so we were not able to see inside the mounds or go into the visitors center, however we walked a large part of the area and throughly enjoyed the walk, the cultural markers along the way and the views. Once you become familiar with the 17,000 year history associated with Ocmulgee you can't help but be in awe of being able to stand on the site that has seen so much of Americas past.

If it's a nice day outside, this is a wonderful place for a hike and to see the history of the Ocmulgee tribe. Self-guided tour allowed you to move at your own pace. We then took a hike along the trail!

The overlook views the clear waters at a bend in the river with covered picnic pavilions. to enjoy the scene. The concrete walkways allow safe access along the river. Snakes are common in Georgia but would be easily seen on the white sidewalks. The slopes are gradual and are not difficult for people with disabilities. Recommended for walks during mild temperatures.

For me, this is a highlight of downtown Macon. This trail parallels the Ocmulgee River and New Town Macon has plans to greatly expand it. Now, we just need some bars and restaurants alongside.

The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail is very nice - right along the river in Macon.

At the entrance we used we did notice several homeless people - while they did approach us - it does seem the mayor and police could better secure the area.

There is a nice Otis Redding Jr statue here.

Another downside is parking - there really is none at the Charles Jones Gateway Park entrance - just a small area to pull over - right across from the homeless people (no security for ones car)

There can also be better lighting.

So - cool park area and area to walk - but - go in a group, go in daytime, don't leave valuables in car - and good luck finding a parking spot.

Macon has potential with this - but work needs to be done.
