Delightful places to snorkel. You need to be very careful not to damage the reef. We want it to keep on living for a long long time! The further out you go the better the fish are. Saw some I’ve never seen before. My favorite with someone who’s coloring was like military camouflage.

Easy find parking. Easy in and out the water. Good for whole family with any age group . Tips: wear water shoes and bring water, snorkeling

Enjoyed stopping here in the morning to get a little snorkling in. There was a good amount of fish here, including yellow tangs, needle fish, yellow needle fish, parrotfish, and several other types I don't know the names of. Lots of big urchins are visible and smaller ones are embedded in the rocks so you need to be careful not to grab or step on these getting in and out of the water.
It was pretty slippery also, easier to get in than out. Water shoes are a must. It was my husband's first snorkling experience and he got nauseous so we only stayed about an hour and a half. $5 parking fee goes into a box next to the parking lot entrance, which are managed by some locals. No water or toilet here.

The water was perfect, we went early and avoided any crowds, paid the $5 parking for easy parking. The water was crystal clear, so many varieties of fish, beautiful snorkel day. Sadly did not see the dolphins that sometime frequent the area.

Also known as Two Step. There is a $5 paid parking lot along with limited free street parking. One walks about 100 feet on black lava to the end where there are two steeps into the water. Depending upon the tide and waves, it can be easy or hard to get from the water back to land. There is some coral and lots of fish in the water.
I like Kahaluu Beach park better for snorkeling.

unfortunately we didn't get the opportunity to swim in the bay. The whole bay is closed off from the highway for weekly maintenance on Tuesdays. We will try and get back next time

From my experience, Two Step was the best place to snorkel on the Big Island. Even better than Kealakakua Bay which is saying something. Get there early unless you want to pay $5 to park in a private lot or park far away on the road accessing the nearby Place of Refuge National Park. The water had some surge and there was maybe a 1 foot wave near the steps into the water. Getting in and out was pretty easy though unnerving the first time as I didn't know how deep it was and didn't want to hit any coral. Once in the water there were so many schools of fish to look at and the water was crystal clear. Due to the parking situation, there weren't as many people in the water which was nice for us. Definitely recommend this awesome snorkel spot. My young kids weren't ready for the water here but my teenage nephews and nieces loved it. Also saw some scuba divers getting suited up nearby.

The lava provides great cover for underwater life. People are perched all over the rocks as they snorkel the area in search of beauty. It's a difficult area to park around with people selling all kinds of things but it makes for fun scenery. You can see the fish just standing on the side swimming around without going in the water, but if you are a die hard snorkeler, this is a favorite spot. It's next door to Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. You have to pay to go into the park, but we purchased a National Parks pass so we were able to go in and enjoy the site with no additional charge. You have to respect the sacred space that the Park provides and not encroach on the serenity it evokes.

I’d like to come right here from the airport in Kona when we arrive (Thursday afternoon, late August) - on our way to Volcano. If we pay for parking, is it safe to have our things in the car? Or should my partner stay with the car?

A solution would be to park at the City of Refuge state run parking lot! You would have to pay but you can see the site and then go over to snorkel at the bay! It is not a great beach for relaxing on! All Lava but there are a few picnic benches...

Has anyone gone in November?

I have lived 3 miles away for over 3 years and I go for a snorkel almost every day. The ocean can get angry any time of year but November is not yet winter and should be fine. I have never found the need to wear a wetsuit ever and the tide is more tom watch than time of day. Low tide can make it hard to get out of the water. I always tell people you can get into the water anywhere but get out only at the 2-step, where the wave action will set you right up onto a step. Watch others to find the right place.
