We really didn't know what to expect and were happily surprised about the park. We did the driving tour which really isn't a long distance, but took us over an hour because we were constantly stopping to enjoy the vistas. We went early in the morning to beat the heat, and as it turned out we beat most of the other patrons that day. There were very few visitors. If I'm back in the area again I'll definitely stop again.

Nice interpretive center, helpful Rangers and a couple of films to watch. The 8 mile loop takes probably 45 minutes if you don’t stop too much lots of good. The park is not that far Tucson.

Hubby and I visited both the East and Western Saguaro National Parks.
I enjoyed the scenic drives in both sections, I did like that the East drive more that it was paved, the west section's drive was a dirt road with some pot holes. The wildflowers and cactus were beautiful in both parts of the park. There was not much wildlife to see, a few birds. I think we went at a good time to see the cactus blooming.

Both the East and the West districts of Saguaro National Park are equally impressive, albeit in different ways. The West district features denser saguaro forests. The East District features fewer but older (taller!) saguaros amid spectacular sweeping views. We feel fortunate that we were able to visit them both on different days of our trip.

We got an early start in the West district in order to hike the 0.9 mile Valley View trail before the heat of the day set in. This short hike was equally rewarding for both the immersion among cacti along the trail and the impressive view at the end. Not to mention that we saw many lizards! We also drove the entirety of the 5-mile Bajada Loop Drive (unpaved but perfectly fine for passenger vehicles), walked the 0.5 mile Desert Discovery Nature Trail and watched the movie at the Red Hills Visitor center. Don’t miss the movie. The Signal Hill petroglyph trail was closed due to road construction into the area - it’s on our list for next time.

Our primary activity in the East district was the 8-mile scenic Cactus Forest Drive. The Javelina Rocks pullout was a standout for the amazing views from rocks you could easily scramble to the top of. The ranger at the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center pointed us to the Javelina picnic area as the more scenic of the two in this district and it did not disappoint. Though it wasn’t a hiking kind of day for us, we’d be interested in the Cactus Forest Trail, Freeman Homestead Trail or loop trails in the Mica View picnic are another time.

Very informative hiking guide pamphlets are available at the respective visitor centers in each district.

Did not spend as nearly as much time here as I would have liked. If you want to enjoy the East or West park in full, plan for a whole day at minimum. We stopped on our way up to Scottsdale from Tucson. The West Park seemed to better fit our needs - stop by the visitor center and they can help you plan something with the allotted time you're working with. We had a few hours to spare, and were suggested a driving route with stops along the way to get out and walk. Incredible scenery and definitely appropriate for all ages - we saw couples, families, elderly people, and the like all enjoying the various walking paths. One thing to note is that off the main road which is paved, the other driving paths are dirt. They are somewhat groomed, but just something to note as some might not be comfortable driving a rental in such conditions.

The saguaros the symbol of the American west. These huge plants are the largest cacti in North American. Some stand 60 feet tall. I liked the adobe visitor center that fit in nicely with the surroundings. We only got to do the west or Tucson Mountain unit which by the way has the most cacti. There is a 4 mile or so loop drive through the saguaro forest, hiking trails and we had a nice lunch in the Ez-kim-in -zin picnic area. There were some shelters to get you out of the sun and clean restrooms.

This park has two sections: one on the east and one on the west of Tucson. Both have ranger stations where activities may be planned. Both also have facilities, gift shops, and educational displays. An interpretive film is helpful in learning about the area. For those not wishing to hike, there are circular drives that bring the viewer through prime Sonoran desert ecosystems. All is professionally done.

The only reason I lowered my stars is the price. Fortunately, we have a senior pass that allows free entry. Otherwise, the charge is $20 per car. That seems pricely for an 8 or 5 mile drive. While the National Park has prime scenery, it is no different from other area parks and hillsides that have the exact same variety which can be viewed for free.

Bicycles are a great way to tour the East park. The paved loop road is about 8 miles, but you can insert a 5-mile (round trip) ride on the Cactus Forest Trail. We had some lovely conversations with hikers when we pulled over to let them by, mostly about the profusion of wildflowers alongside the trail. Make your ride a bit longer by dipping into the picnic areas. The loop road can be busy, but drivers tend to be courteous. Note that there are some steep sections! A meal at Saguaro Corners after your visit is a great way to fill up the tank after your ride.

We visited the west Park. The drive with some short walks of the park was spectacular. The cacti and mountain views were superb. Signal Hill was closed off.
