The house of the sculptor with a wonderful tour, given by a ranger who could be an actor, very entertaining and very informative. Gorgeous gardens with sculptures by St. Gaudens. It was worth a visit!!

This is a great site to visit. You start at the visitor center which has a short movie on the life of the sculptor and a few exhibits.
The house tour is only open for certain hours a few hours in the morning and then a few hours in the afternoon so check before you arrive. The Ranger will walk you thru the house.
Next door to the house is the studio, this has a carving of the frieze from the Parthenon on it. They also have various models of the sculptures he did. When we were there a sculpture gave a demonstration.
As you walk thru the grounds you can see the 54th Massachusetts sculpture, one done for Charles Adam's wife, an Abraham Lincoln one and his David Farragut. They have a small building with more models and casts and a traveling exhibit.
They have an artist in residence that you can visit depending on when you are there along with a path along the river that goes to a swimming hole. You can also go down and see the Temple which contains the ashes of St Gaudens and his family.

This historic site has been on our list for years but timing never seemed quite right. October was perfect. Not too crowded. the ranger who gave the outdoor tour of the artwork and background of St. Gauden was very professional, informative and in depth, easily answering a variety of questions. This seemed to be a good time to visit. Weather was nice, not too crowded and plenty of time to explore the indoor temporary art exhibit, the indoor exhibit of St. Gauden's work as well as beautifully maintained grounds and trails. The tour of the home was very informative as well though the size of rooms did not allow for much time in each of the relatively small spaces but the furnishings are original with additional works of art. See it all!

This place was not at all on my radar when I planned our trip. We had driven up to Windsor to see another museum, and the lady who sold the tickets there talked to us about our plans and recommended this place as very worthwhile. So, after lunch, we crossed a semi-narrow wooden bridge and drove a mile or two to this site. You park in a small lot (there was a sign for overflow parking too) and either pay there (if a ranger is on duty) or proceed to the visitors' center (where you can also pay).
Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an American sculptor in the late 1800s and into the very early 1900s. I was not specifically familiar with him, but his work and that of those who trained with him was featured on a lot of U.S. coins at the time. It seems like a lot of the older coinage (before the models used now) was related to him. He also designed the Shaw Memorial on Boston Commons (related to the 54th Massacusetts regiment of black troops - see the film 'Glory' for background).
From the visitors' center, there are several other areas to see. The ground slopes down towards the Connecticut River in the distance. Facing that, there is a small gallery and courtyard featuring some sculptures to your right. There is also a large sculpture of Lincoln. As you proceed towards the river, there are some works housed in spaces bordered by high hedges (including a copy of the Shaw Memorial). These end at the border to Saint-Gauden's original house, which is sometimes open for tours. When we visited, the sign just said 'wait for docent to open the door'. We later learned that this only happens between 2 - 4 p.m., which would be helpful to add to the sign.
A bit below that is the studio building, which has examples of the sculptor's work and exhibits on the process of creating some. Maybe 300 yards further down is a memorial (sort of a small Greek temple) where the Saint-Gaudens' ashes (and those of several family members) are buried.
It was a pretty site especially if the weather is nice. The sculptures, especially those which are outdoors, make for good photos. They also offer periodic ranger-led tours. We tagged along for part of one, but had already seen some of the areas, so we broke off and continued on our own. If you are in this area and have any interest in sculpture, this is very worthwhile.

Being a self proclaimed NPS geak, when we figured out this place was less than 30 minutes from our rental in VT, we had to go. Lots to learn here about art, sculpting, and Augusta Saint-Gaurdens. We took in the self-guided walking tour, an open house of the mansion, and a short hike on the grounds. A short and simple visit!

The Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site was breathtaking! We started our tour with Aspet, the Saint-Gaudens home. There is much to see there, but the heart of the site is the sculpture collection - wow. Shaw Memorial, Adams Memorial, Standing Lincoln, The Pilgrim, Farragut and more. We ran into a park ranger who explained the Farragut in greater detail. We're just sorry we missed his Beyond the Bronze talk later in the day! There is much more here than the website or the pamphlet lets on. Be sure to take your time on site, at least two hours.

Beautiful sculptures by Augustus St Gaudens. An informative video is worth watching. You have to walk through grass to get to some areas but there are walking paths. Visit was about an hour. National Park Staff very helpful. Cost is $5 unless you have a pass.

I have wanted to visit the Saint-Gaudens historic site for close to 30 years - and I finally had my chance. My wife and I stopped there on the way home from Northern Vermont and we were ecstatic. It far exceeded my expectations. My wife was not familiar with Saint-Gaudens and didn't know what to expect - she figured it would be another old house museum. She didn't want to leave! We loved the fact that there were few paths and we could walk in the grass between buildings. We loved the gardens and the home. What an idyllic setting. And we learned so much more about the artist. The short film was excellent and should not be missed. He was an amazing artist and we were so pleased so many of his works were visible at the site.

Our third visit to this wonderful historic site once again exceeded our expectations! Erin, an exceptional guide, brought Saint-Gaudens, the sculptor, into greater focus. There are outside tours available as well as ones for the interior of the main house. We enjoyed a picnic lunch on the lovely grounds (picnic tables available).

How far is the walk from the closest dropoff for visitors at the visitors center to the house and back? Is it level or hilly? Thanks.
Skrevet 25. april 2019
The walk from the parking area to the visitor center is a couple hundred feet and fairly flat. The walk to the house is back in the direction of the parking area.
There is a service drive that goes to the visitor center and there is handicap parking nearby.

I'm sorry, I have no idea. I don't recall seeing any pets. Call the National Park Service, they will help.
