The UNESCO missions are a great series. This is the least impressive of them all, but it is still worth your time to visit. Won’t need more than 30 minutes to visit. There is a nice farm to see as well.

This Mission’s church is very small and not as elaborate as the others. Above and on the side of the altar are nice statues and the wooden ceiling is quite pretty and unique. The building next to the church contains a small museum.

What sets this mission apart were the surroundings. The church wasn't my favorite of the five missions, but Mission San Juan has a walking path and you can see how the missions set up and managed fields and gardens and built canals to water their crops. There is a restored cabin. Well maintained, flat easy walkways and free parking. Not crowded.
PLEASE NOTE: Apparently this is easy to confuse with Mission San Jose (reading the reviews). This is NOT the mission with the visitor center and ranger station and tours. That is Mission San Jose a few minutes up the road. The actual Mission San Juan is an entirely whitewashed building.

Mission San Juan was the least exciting of the four missions for me. Beware, many of the reviews and photos are for Mission San Jose, which is much larger and more impressive.

We visited this mission and of all the ones here in San Antonio it is the one we liked the most. Thanks to a beautiful restoration and repair work, we get a precise idea of the dimensions and spaces in which the people lived inside the mission. The free guided tour of about 40 minutes held every day by the rangers at 10 and 11 am is very interesting and informative. After the visit, I recommend exploring the site further on your own, given that you have the opportunity to enter different environments (barn, church, etc.).

This large Spanish colonial compound was active in the mid-1700's and is now maintained by the National Park Service. There is no entry fee and you can walk around the grounds and into the church as you like. Park rangers offer free guided tours just about every day. The Catholic Archdiocese does hold services at the church so be advised. The building construction using rock is amazing and the interior of the church is beautiful. There is some restoration work in progress now on the church dome and you can see where the Park Service has done restoration work elsewhere at the mission to preserve this bit of history.

we saw 3 of the missions while visiting San Antonio each is unique and wonderful. Take your time to visit and learn about the part each played in our history.

Mission San Juan was originally in East Texas, and transferred to this location in 1731. In large it was location with many artisans, orchards and gardens. It was a major supplier of products that helped maintain the mission group, as well as the local settlements and military posts.

It's easy to confuse the Mission San Juan Capistrano in San Antonio, Texas, with the more celebrated Mission San Juan Capistrano in Orange County, California, where the migratory American cliff swallow has spent its summer for centuries after wintering in Argentina. Meanwhile, Mission San Juan in San Antonio has made a reputation of its own. Located a 9101 Graf Road, on the eastern banks of the San Antonio River, it was established in East Texas in 1716, moved to San Antonio in 1731 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Unfortunately, San Juan did not prosper to the same extent as the other missions in San Antonio because its allotted lands were not sufficient to plant vast quantities of crops or breed large numbers of horses and cattle. With its bustling economy, for example, Mission San Jose established a trade network stretching East to Louisiana and South to Coahuila, Mexico. This thriving economy helped the mission to survive epidemics and Indian attacks in its final years. Meanwhile, Mission San Juan fell into disrepair. It took centuries to recover. Finally, as a result of a public works project in 1934 and restorations during the 1960s, the church, the priests' quarters and other structures were reconstructed. Today, most of the original square remains within the courtyard walls, portraying an authentic depiction of the floor plan and layout.

Very cool to see history first hand. The park ranger giving the (granted it was a free tour) tour seemed to be doing her first presentation so we went on our own to explore. We also had our 5 year old grandson so he was not going to be quiet and attentive for the hour or so needed to follow the group. We were able to enter several of the original domiciles to see what life would have been like for the natives that lived inside the walls. We also saw the grainery which was very impressive. Overall, very good experience. If I did it again I would probably follow the tour guide. (It seemed that tours are only available twice a day so be sure to check ahead of time.
