Came for the Halloween party. Followed the scavenger hunt and got free candy. If your kids like trains or transportation they will like this. Lots of different trains and other stuff. The train ride was short but fun, my son loved it. All the staff seemed to be having a good time. Just a note the trains can be hard to climb into for little ones. I lifted my son up so it wasn’t a big deal but this could be a challenge for others

We were wintering in San Antonio for several weeks and I found this attraction. The wife was not too excited about it at first, but she loved it. Great for kids 4 thru 84.

Although San Antonians, my husband and I had never visited the Texas Transportation Museum until this Saturday (It’s open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with scheduled train rides in the afternoons). Admission was free on this day as part of TTM’s Pullman Porter outreach project. Upon arrival, we were hustled aboard for a train ride powered by a Baldwin 0-4-0 steam locomotive. This was as thrilling for us “seniors” as it was for adults and children of every age.
We then wandered nostalgically through a restored Pullman sleeping car, one of the few remaining ones in the United States open to the public. Lastly, we visited a large cavernous building filled with collections of model trains, as well as authentic, restored vehicles important for transportation in San Antonio’s history. I watched with fascination as the model trains, all busily covering routes, whistled to warn of their approach, crossed bridges over canyons, chugged through mountain tunnels, and glided through towns complete with trees, dogs, people, and shops. This was a fitting end to our first visit to the TT Museum.
The Museum is mainly run by volunteers, has been in existence for 50+ years and accepts no government funding. We were both impressed by the meticulous, loving attention which the volunteers had obviously put into almost every aspect of the Museum, including the working trains, the restored cars, and the model train collections.

We went there last Saturday to see the Christmas lights and it was awesome. We were welcomes by the manager himself and invited to see all the different things they are having there. When it got dark one of the trains started driving up and down the track while they have several wagons that show the history of train travel. I also took a couple of pictures of that place and was able to take a video. It's on YouTube in case you guys want to check it out.
This is an awesome place and worth the money for sure.

Visited the museum with my nine year old and a couple friends. While the steam loco wasn't operating we were able to still ride the train a couple of times. Very friendly volunteers and lots to see! The passenger cars are quite neat to walk through and the exhibit building on the hill houses some very interesting vehicles, a Lionel layout, and a long HO scale layout with tons to see and enjoy!

At first I wasn't sure if the price was worth it but my son told me three times before we got home how much fun he had. We'll definitely come back - especially for the holiday events.

Great place to visit!

No, it's not a huge museum, and not really a museum either. Instead it's an organic layout of model and actual train exhibits. I say "organic" because if you want the feel of a museum with heart, a personal passion, this is it! I appreciate that you move between different buildings with some inside and outside exhibits. We love this place at Christmas because nothing goes better together than trains and Christmas. Check the calendar for events. We have visited for decades and our toddlers and teens have enjoyed the model trains, automobiles, and static train car and locomotive displays. Plus, a full scale train ride - even if it is an out-and-back straight line - toddlers don't know the difference, but the smile on their face says it all as they ride on a real train. Just know what you're getting into when you go here, and wear the right frame of mind: think family-museum with love rather than city-museum with curation.

I am quite the "Train Guy" with an understanding wife. While camping in San Antonio I wanted to check out the museum and especially the HO Layout.
We went out on a Friday morning. The credit card machine was down and the lady had no change for cash. Luckily I had the exact amount - $16. (for two) $1 discount each for seniors and another $1. discount because the train was not running for rides.
There was no volunteer for operating the Garden Railroad but, we went and looked it over anyway. There were locomotives and rail cars laying off the tracks in various places and the layout seemed to be in disarray.
We then went up to see the large HO layout. It was big with many trains. There was a young man, attendant, sitting at a table heavily involved with his cell phone. We exchanged good mornings and he went back to his cell phone.
There was one passenger train running around the layout and as I viewed I noticed the scenery really needed some maintenance and the layout in general looked run down.
Actually the entire museum looked run down and needs a lot of cleanup.

We did enjoy touring the Pullman cars and my wife made my photo standing in front of the old Baldwin 2-8-0

There are other displays such as old trucks, cars, and fire engines but, due to the condition of the museum I think maybe a $5 admission would be fair.

We were disappointed but, can add that to another Train Museum visited

I've just taken over the Museum's TripAdvisor page. I'm sorry that you had a less than spectacular visit but I assure you that things have definitely changed since your visit.

A well organized display of full size transportation items. Trucks, car and train going back to late 1800s and forward. Ride a full size train for a short distance. Several wonderfulodel train setups make fun viewing. Staff is super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Maybe a little pricey but I thought it was worth the money. You can also book birthday parties there.

My husband is the train buff so I would not have picked this place, but it was very nice. He really enjoyed it. The folks working there clearly love it. We visited the first week of November, so the trains were still decorated from Halloween, which was fun. It would probably be great to visit for their Halloween festivities, with kids. The garden railway was really nice.

My two children, ages 11 and 5, and I visited during spring break. The weather was colder than usual so there weren't too many people there. My 5 year old son had a great time! He loved the train ride the best, even though it was a short ride. There's lots of track waiting to be put together on the property, but since the place is run entirely by volunteers it may be a while until the project is finished. There are restored Pullman train cars that one can tour. There's an outdoor train section that is a work in progress. In a separate building are carriages, old autos, an extensive train track, an old fire carriage, and many more pieces of transportation memorabilia. My 11 year old daughter appreciated the history of the items and enjoyed seeing how the beds pulled down from the ceiling in the Pullman cars. It was far more thrilling for my five year old, and I had a hard time getting him to leave. There's a small gift shop on site which sells trains, train whistles, plastic ducks with engineer overalls on, engineer hats and t shirts. The staff of volunteers was so friendly and made the trip memorable. They are passionate about trains and enjoy sharing information about the museum with visitors. We spent about 2 hours touring the place. It's a unique experience. It's not necessarily a tourist destination in San Antonio, but if you like quirky and off the beaten path and have a couple of extra hours, this is the place for you.
