We were quite inspired by the history and the woman that ran the gift shop. She knew so much about Santa Fe and the church. Very inspiring.

A beautiful location and lovely opportunity to take a moment to reflect on blessings. I was not able to visit the church during my several visits to the area, but being there was pleasant & peaceful. Take the time to see and unwind.

Look up at the beams, consider these were hewn before the advent of axes. Look also at the preserved glimpse into the adobe structure. You do with what you have. And, it endured!

Construction dates are a bit hazy, maybe it was built between the late 1700's and the early 1800's but it may date back to the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. But the altar screen is more firmly anchored in history: it was brought in pieces from Mexico City circa 1783 and, once installed, signed with that date. So we are all looking back nearly 250 years in the past at a piece of precious religious art. Look at the corers of the piece for the date and signature.

So so often is the case, religious sites undergo additions, reconfigurations, and all manner of modifications as suit the present "tenants" as was the case here. Oh, and add in a fire or so along the way just for some more complications to the history. It is all happening here.

Sometime before a 1922 Mission style rebuild, this precious little sanctuary was transformed by a French cleric to sport a pitched roof (more in keeping with Old World image). Fast-forward to 1976-78 to yet another remodel which is pretty much what we see today. During the interim, a fire and the uprising probably altered things a bit.

Thankfully, the beautiful altar screen endured, unscathed, and still welcomes visitors who bring with them the spark of their curiosity and historic interest to long live in those brain cells of ours.

But it piqued our interest outside when we looked at the wall and noticed the inscription for a Bonaparte dedication (circa 1918) and no one or any source could shed light on what a Bonaparte was doing (or dedicating) to a religious site at this point in our history.

1918: the Armistice was signed. Napoleon is long dead, and the Louisiana Purchase is a thing of history. And yet we see Bonaparte on the wall? In little Santa Fe, NM? This will long remain a mystery for us.

We enjoyed walking through this historic church and learning more about the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe from one of the volunteers here.

Be sure to visit the small museum room, as it has some interesting historical photos showing how the church has changed in appearance over the years.

This Santuario offers a great opportunity to take some exterior photos of the Adobe church with the white cross against a blue New Mexico sky. There are also some nice gardens.

The church is beautiful, we walked around it , also got into inside. There was a person inside praying, so we left quietly. The garden was very beautiful, many different colors of roses were blooming. It was probably the most beautiful rose garden we have been to in this entire trip.

This is the oldest continuously operating shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe in the country. It is administered by the parish behind it and what a wonderfully welcoming Community. There is a small gift shop behind the shrine with a friendly worker to answer any questions. It has an interesting history of you take the time to ask some questions,

Beautiful grounds to stroll and great photo ops! Some grade changes, but easy to get around if you are somewhat limited in walking.

If you want a very short walk to stretch your legs, or want to buy a souvenir, or a cup of coffee, or a meal, you would benefit by stopping on the High Road to Taos. There are 2 churches, a small park and shops to visit. That is all.
