Disclaimer: we did not go inside. We found out there was a recommended $5 donation to enter to see the staircase and we had no cash at all on us and felt bad going inside without donating, so we just looked at the outside. It's a gorgeous chapel!

For those who follow me here, I have a passion for churches… the Loretta Chapel in Santa Fe is small, but breathtaking. The centerpiece is the 2 story staircase that was built (by us of the faith) by St. Joseph in response to the prayers of the nuns in residence at the chapel in the 1870s.
The builder of the chapel died before the stairs to the choir loft were built. Without funds, the nuns prayed a novena to St. Joseph. On the 9th day of the prayer, a stranger showed up with minimal tools, built the staircase, and disappeared. Modern engineers cannot explain how the spiral staircase exists without any visible means of support. Many to this day believe this was a miracle!
The staircase is amazing, and all who see it feel there is something special about it! It’s primarily a special event venue now. It costs a few bucks to get in, and the exit takes you through the gift shop! LOL It’s well worth the 30 minutes it takes to tour the chapel. Highly recommend the Loretta Chapel!

There are lots of amazing things that you can see as you travel the country and places like Loretto Chapel should be on everyones list. While it's rather small, it is quite incredible. Do you research before you go, or ask the receptionist to give you some background, it makes the church even more amazing.
Here's a bit of the history. They first built a school, construction stated in 1850, by the Sisters of Loretto, answering the call from the bishop with the need of a school to educate the girls in the area. The school opened in 1853. In 1873 the chapel construction started and while there's lots to the story, it opened.
The staircase, which is the amazing part of the story has two complete 360 degrees turns with no center pole for structural support. The entire weight of the staircase rests on the bottom stair. Crazy.
If you're in the area, go see this. It's worth the stop.

Quick walk in stop off the Santa Fe Plaza. The stairs are beautiful and the small chapel is as well.
Privately owned and used for weddings and events.
Very much worth a stop if yo are perusing the Plaza.

A beautiful church with an intriguing history. A pretty quick stop, but you could actually spend as much time as you’d like inside. We first learned of the chapel from Unsolved Mysteries and it was cool to see the famous staircase in person.

DO NOT SKIP this church while in Santa Fe. Its rich, beautiful history is an amazing story and even though it’s privately owned and maintained, and cost $5 to go inside, it’s worth it. The little gift shop has tons of religious items to choose fro, if you’re interested.

We were disappointed. While the chapel is nice, the "famous" stairway is no longer there. Now, it's just a normal circular stairway. Would not pay the entrance fee of $5 again.

$5 to view a roped-off staircase.. Viewing the staircase took no more than 5 minutes. Was not worth it for us. It was quite crowded with a muffled explanatory repeating soundtrack playing through speakers.

This is a must-see in Santa Fe. The story of the "Miraculous Staircase" is fascinating. Price is fair. Too bad it is no longer a Catholic church. Still a beautiful place for a wedding.

What is the average length of time you are there? 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour?
Skrevet 11. februar 2024
I would say less than 30. Depends on how interested your are in the construction of the staircase and/or the chapel itself
Skrevet 13. februar 2024
How much was the admission to Loretta chapel staircase?
Skrevet 9. august 2018
Is there parking for motor homes near the chapel?
Skrevet 8. september 2017
You can park on the sidewalk -- if need be -- for overflow. It's 100% OK.
You'll get a validation pass at the 1st entryway.
I recommend putting your hazards on for the duration of your visit. Be safe. Have fun.
Skrevet 17. juli 2019
Do they allow the guests to climb the stairs to the choir loft? Or just pose of the stairs for photos? Do they allow the guests to take photos inside the chapel?
Skrevet 25. februar 2017
You are NOT making a donation by giving your $5.
This "church" is privately owned by a NM family.

Is there a tour guide present to answer questions on site?
Skrevet 23. februar 2017
I think every movie has fiction and fact. The fun part of seeing the staircase at Laretto Chapel is that no one is quite sure of all the facts and never will be.
Skrevet 24. februar 2017
Hi, It's just a few dollars. As a guest of the hotel I was given a couple free passes. It is definitely worth it, as I have paid to see it many years ago. Hope this helps.
Skrevet 7. april 2016
I would like to get engaged to my future wife at Loretto Chapel. Are there places in the chapel that are conducive to that. Thank you
Skrevet 26. desember 2015
It is a pretty public place, but perhaps you could arrange with the chapel to do this at a time where there are not a lot of people.
Skrevet 29. desember 2015
Is there any Christmas eve service/event held there this year? Or Christmas Day?
Skrevet 2. november 2015
I am not sure about this. You can call the chapel and find this out however at 505-982-0092
