Did a half day afternoon of some great Spring skiing. Easy in and out, great rental folks, well-maintained runs.

Want to know what to expect? Read on. I’ll try to provide a lot of details as I did not find much in that before we went. Here you go:
- March 13-19 (2022) is spring break so expect 2 + hr waits for rentals and weekend prices .
-rentals- veeeeery confusing and crowded but it all somehow worked out in the end. If you signed up to do a lesson that included rentals, YOU DONt HAVE TO STAND IN LINE! This is crucial. Ask someone in a red jacket where to go if you have a lesson. We were able to go straight to the rental back door and get started.
- lessons- bring a pen bc you have to fill out a form for each person in the lesson. Don’t loose that paper bc you need it at each station to get equipment, have your Drivers License #
-boots- don’t try to try on your boots in line to get skis. They will be tight, your kid will fight you, you may need help. Just get all your stuff and go find a bench. If you have to exchange, there is a “boot exchange” in the locker room. The girl was super nice and came and helped my sons get their feet in and buckled.
- helmets- they have them , but it is one little line in the locker room. Try to rent them with your bibs from the outfitters around town (more on that below)
-if you don’t have lessons, you have to wait in line to get gear. We got there at 10:30 and had all our stuff by 1 and that was with the short cut. Good luck if you don’t! I called at 9 and they said the line was already out the door. If you have gear, you can go straight to the window and get lift ticket.
-parking is free . We got there at 10:30 and there were spots but it was filling up. You can drive up to drop off people and gear and then go find a spot. (May get one honoring if you are lucky)
- if you are going to ski more than one day, consider renting your gear for the full amount of time and just hang on to it. Rather than re-renting each day. They said they had storage but - agaiN- the line was so long that we just took them with us.
- bring cash- dollars to be precise. You need $2 to get a locker. Lockers are small. They fit only 2 pairs of snow boots. It is one time use. If you go back to open again and so you turn the key to open it, you have to put in more money to lock again so plan carefully
-don’t forget to tip your instructor! They are awesome. We didn’t have cash and our guy gladly texted me his Venmo.
- bathrooms are clean and all the gear was well kept and clean. They ran out of ski poles, but then I found a huge pile up at the ski school so maybe you can snag some up there.
- we rented bibs from Cottoms which is half way up the mountain. We called 3 times to ask if they think they would run out or if we need reservations and they said no. We went up there around 9, there were 20 ppl on line ahead of us and it took an hour. They had no large or XL- they had run out. my son is 5’9 and 140 and he wore a small so it worked out. We should have gotten helmets from there.( one less thing to figure out at Ski Santa Fe) Any way you slice it, you are waiting in lines.
- everyone was SUper friendly and helpful. They clearly love their job. So all in all , it turned out fine. Just expect delays, expect a little chaos, but worth it in the end and your will be great.
Have fun! Great place for families- just very crowded and busy!

My family and I came here on the recommendation of a colleague who said it was a great family ski mountain. He was totally right -- we had a truly great time here and my four-year-old kid hasn't stopped talking about how much fun ski school was.
For the ski school -- our kiddo was nervous about going to a different school without his friends, but the whole staff with the 'little chips' was truly amazing. Jim and Sarah in the front office somehow made all the kids feel welcome and comfortable while getting everyone checked in. Then on the slopes, Mila and Greg were terrific instructors and made sure he had fun. We went for two mornings, and at the end of every morning, he was excited to "show us how to ski" and "give us some pointers" -- it was awesome. When it was time to go on the second day, he was upset that we wouldn't be coming back the next morning.
This all worked really well for me and my wife, who hadn't gone skiing together since he arrived. There were plenty of trails to keep us occupied in the morning, and the kiddo's package came with rentals and a lift pass for the rest of the day so that one parent could hang out with him on the bunny slope and the other could enjoy some quiet lift rides and sunny afternoon skiing. We totally enjoyed the laid-back vibe, short weekday lift lines, low crowds, and low stress -- perfect vacation material.
Again, I can't say enough good things about the ski school and family experience -- we will be back next winter!

Fresh snow, first lift up (almost), I got lucky. I skied from one side of the mountain to he other and hit every blue run and a couple blacks multiple times. I only had on day in town so I just stuck with the fun runs, repeatedly. It was a blast. The quad lift is super slow but others are zippy.

This is a large and good ski area near downtown Santa Fe. There are five lifts leading to more slopes. There is ski daycare, cafeteria and everything you would expect.

We drove from Santa Fe, we were lucky it has snowed earlier in the week and the lower but not upper part of the mountain was open.
My kids went to the school and they had fun, their instructors were nice but the check in process was atrocious. Unlike other places that everything can be done online, most things were required to do in paper (not easy to do while waiting outside while it was 15 degrees). The worst is that we had to repeat the process the following day… 🤦🏽
The rentals were fine, still a long line but we took them back to the hotel to avoid the line the following day.
The ski lifts were sometimes busy, maybe a little slow. I got the impression that signals were lacking, many first time skiers didn’t know where to go….
The slopes were pretty clean and the overall atmosphere was nice.
Probably will not go back…

Despite 21 inches pf new snow in the last 48h, Ski Santa Fe has still not opened the upper mountain. Only the beginner area on the lower mountain is open.
My ski pass is now worthless!

I can't comment on the quality of skiing because I went in the summer. However, the views from the lift were not worth the cost.

Ski Santa Fe has really long runs and good snow. It rarely get above freezing in the winter so they hold their snow well. Ski all day and it will wear you out. Facilities are above average as well as the food.

Our group was 5, I was the picture taker and my friends learned to Snow Board and Ski. It is not to say I did not enjoy myself. I snow shoe up and around the slopes. Our day was fun, they had their classes for both skiing and snowboarding and the instructors were great very patient with all of the ladies and by the end of the day all of them were on the chair lefts coming down the mountain as if they were on boards or skies for years. A great place to learn and have fun. Ski Santa Fe, is only 15 miles from the city of Santa Fe, NM and takes about 40 minutes to get to the slopes. The roads are very windy and only 2 lanes and if snows it can be very slick, so caution is advised. As for spending a day at Ski Santa Fe do it. One other thing they take mask wearing very seriously, so please wear yours. They do have a cafe one can rest and eat at. And as for parking come early the spots fill up fast. Enjoy, your ski day.

How can we ensure that our minivan will safely traverse the mountain road between Santa Fe & the ski resort? Under what conditions would we need to consider modifications (snow chains?)

We had an AWD rental car and had no issue despite the fact it had snowed about 5” overnight. There was a plow already coming down when we were going up.
Some cars without AWD or 4WD had chains but I thought it was excessive.
If you drive slowly and carefully you should be fine but think it all depends on how much snow is around and your comfort level around snow…

What is the parking situation at ski sante fe between Christmas and New Years? How far a walk for children to the base? Do the lots fill up?

It all depends on the amount of snow. Last year was so epic they turned people away. If you get there super early you should be fine if you are renting equipment there get there even earlier! They have these cattle trailers That carry you too The snow is ok this year but not epic like last year So it shouldn’t be as crowded as it was but again I stress if you get there early early everything should be fine and your visit will be much more enjoyable

Hi,
I am not a weather person but usually if it cold they will make snow at that time of the year.
Last year was so amazing because we had so much snow.
There are many other activities at that time of the year.

Is this a good place for non-skiers to just enjoy the snow around Christmas?

Santa Fe is an amazing place, especially the old town and the plaza Square is magical at Christmas time. I've been up to the ski area and there really isn't much to do up there other than ski, snowboard and walk.
Is the gondola open in the summer?

As the other responders indicated SFSA only has chairs and they closed mid-April following a great ski season. I don’t think they plan to run the chairs this summer but you can check their website from time to time to see if a special event is added. In the meantime you may wish to check out Sandia Peak in Albuquerque since they run their tram year-round (in the spring/summer/fall to accommodate area hikers, sightseers or those hitting the restaurant at the top). Safe travels!
