This building was originally built in 1610 though it was largely destroyed in 1680 and has been rebuilt and reconfigured a number of times since then. You can visit the inside of the building as part of your admission to the adjacent New Mexico History Museum. The long covered front porch of the building has dozens of Native American vendors along its full length, and they sell an array of jewelry, clothing and food items, and other things. It's worth checking out what's for sale there even if you're not looking to buy anything. The Palace interior is interesting, and there are good exhibits showing the changes to the building over the centuries. The Palace plus the New Mexico History Museum will be a worthwhile visit for anyone who's interested in the area's long history.

BEST PLACE IN SANTA FE TO FIND AUTHENTIC NATIVE AMERICAN ART, JEWELRY AND MORE TO PURCHASE!!!
Yes, it’s a museum too. I did not go in the museum, but I’m sure it was fabulous. The gift shop, however, is AMAZING. TripAdvisor recommended it, so I reluctantly walked in thinking the prices would be ridiculous. I was wrong. The quality of their merchandise is top notch and prices extremely reasonable. The two clerks were informative and lovely! When I return to Santa Fe, I will be going back here! Highly recommend!

I last visited many years ago, maybe over 20, so definitely things have changed somewhat. When I was here before there seemed to be move native vendors, such that the area was full. This time, of course it was mid week off season, but there were only a handful, maybe less than 50% occupied. I understand there is now a lottery for the vendors to determine who gets to set up so maybe it was just a slow week in general. Regardless, the jewelry is beautiful and authentic.

It's mostly empty. Interesting to stroll through to get an idea of the construction and layout, but what passes for displays aren't worth the time or admission cost. One exception: If you're interested in things related to printing and publishing, there is an excellet exhibit in a couple rooms across the placita at the back of the main palace building.

This ancient governor's palace is very beautiful, it seems to be catapulted into a western film, very evocative

The palace is accessible from and included with the NM state history museum. This for the Palace only. Not much history of the building explained as you move through, the exhibits are rather wan. But then much of the Spanish Colonial experience artifacts are more of the same and it takes some real effort to curate one of these sites so that it coalesces into a cohesive whole (see San Juan Capistrano, perhaps). I expected more history and a better representation of the buildings use thru the centruies. Had this been a stand alone, it wold have been disappointing. As for the sidewalk vendors; just not my thing - perhaps if I knew what I was lookng for or looking at, but but I'm generally not into filling the suitcase with eith tchotchkes or even handcrafted jewelry, so these markets are usually lost on me. Plenty of foot traffic though, hope local people can sanre some bucks.

Friends from England and Ireland visiting. The artists were so very kind and friendly. The jewelry items and the sand art and pottery items purchased were lovely and quality and there was no pressure. Thank you for providing this opportunity to support our treasured and talented Native communities!

Liked the floor cutouts where you could see the original foundations. Amazing how old many Santa Fe buildings are.

It is included as part of the New Mexico History Museum, but there is essentially nothing to see as of Spring 2023. Most of the building is under construction, so there are only 2 rooms to actually look at with very limited exhibits.

Can you visit the vendors without taking a museum tour?
Skrevet 5. juli 2022
Is the Palace if Governors still closed for renovations?
Skrevet 20. august 2019
Yes it is but the true Native American vendors are there on weekends. Their work is amazing.
Skrevet 22. august 2019
Can you and is it respectful to bargain prices at the shops here? Thanks
Skrevet 20. februar 2018
Bargaining is a bit of a lost art.
Negotiating a price that you are willing to pay and one that the seller is willing to accept needs to be done respectfully. The potential buy never knows for sure what price the seller might be willing to accept. Many of the sellers are the artisans that made the items and what they are willing to sell it for may vary with the day of the week and even the time of day.
It all depends on the sellers desire to sell the the the price the buyer's willing to pay...

Hi,
Can't remember what time the vendors are there and what days???????
Do you know?
Thanks,
Gigi

Daily, they are fully licensed, vetted, true their pueblo, artform and family heritage.
Many have inherited their location undervthe portal from their parents and grandparents.
This is highly coveted and respected and for purchaser the real real thing.
Also, stop my friends, going on 4 generations at tne Shop of the Rainbow Man. Tell them Kate sent you. They, too, are the real thing, their history representin Native families and their artforms are respectable and beyond.

What days and times are the vendors at the Palace?
Skrevet 5. januar 2017
The space is packed every day with the local vendors selling a wide variety of items. They are very friendly and it is fun to talk with them about their histories and knowledge of the area.
Skrevet 23. januar 2017
So sorry, I doubt it would be open Christmas Day as all of downtown is closed up except the hotels and some of the restaurants.
Skrevet 27. desember 2016
Are the Palace of the Governors and the New Mexico Museum open on Memorial Day weekend (Sat-Monday)? Will the vendors be set up to sell their crafts in the portal on those days?
Skrevet 24. mars 2016
Hi Jeffrey Your review was posted as 4 days ago. The Palace of Governors is listed as open May onwards. Is the Plaza open? Are there vendors there? We will be in Santa Fe in mid April and the reviews of the Palace and the crafts sound really interesting. I'm disappointed not to be able to see the museum.

Hola Canadian visitor!
We are not the "Jeffrey" to whom you address your question, but we are regular visitors to Santa Fe and we can almost 100% assure you that there will be "vendors" (i.e. Indian craftspeople) with a wide and amazing array of rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. on display for sale at any time you visit. They roll their blankets out, display their wares, and barter with the interested seekers.
If you google for "palace of the governors" (hint for you: put three letters on the front of the search, and follow it up with and ending of "org" and you will get access to the official website with times they are open. This site has some particular rules about not providing the official websites for things (they will edit the answers out) but you are more than welcome to send us a "pm" private message for more info.
Do some exploring of the very special places near downtown. We found the Loretto Chapel and also an original church where Indians waged an arrow assault on the church. There are some truly amazing and historically important places here.

On what days do they set up the jewelry for sale in early April?
Skrevet 1. mars 2015
Are you referring to the sales under the portal of the Governor's Palace? If so, it's pretty much a daily thing, although fewer vendors will show up if they think business will be slow. Mostly that would be on rainy or snowy days outside of the tourist season.
