My husband is a history buff and wanted to stop in the museum on our way up to New Hampshire. Glad we did. It is easy enough to do in an hour. We were greeted right away by a park ranger, Wesley, who was very informative about the history of the Armory. We were lucky to hear Ranger Cliff’s presentation on rifles used from the civil war to present. If you have children great place to go. They get to be sworn in as Junior Rangers and complete activities. There was even a small se toon for Junior Rangers to create buttons. I say if you are passing through or near Springfield stop in and hear about the history of the armory.

A small section of the Armory has be preserved. Large and impressive collection of weapons are on display. There is a film detailing the Armory history. Several machines used in the manufacture of the weapons are on display. We missed the ranger's demonstration.

If you are into history, then this is a must. Great campus and short Uber ride up the hill from downtown and nice short walk back downtown. Collection of antique weapons is very impressive.

The Springfield Armory was one of the main places that guns were built for the US Military from just after the end of the Revolution to the mid 1960's. They have a huge collection of guns here that were built over the periods.
They have exhibits which described the ways that the making of guns has evolved over the years. They then have an exhibit which shows the evolution of the guns made from flintlocks to modern day machine guns. A very nice collection.
There is a movie you can watch which tells the story of the Armory. No charge to enter.
It is a little tough to find as it is on a college campus.

I am copying and pasting the review written below from Daniel O. It perfectly reflects my opinion:

"I am certainly glad we went. We are patriotic and love history. I have to say that I thought there would have been more items on display. The time there is very short but informative. The guides are nice and knowledgeable. There is ample parking."

I'll add this: I was very sorry to learn that the really historic items are upstairs where visitors do not have access. That's a real pity in my opinion.

The Springfield Armory is a gem! In our quest to visit national historic sites, we discovered that this one is on the way to Maine. We are so happy that we stopped. As others have mentioned, the site is located within a college campus but there are signs directing you to it. What a treasure of guns that help to tell the history of the country through the years. I would recommend starting with the introductory video to better understand the history of the armory. We had a wonderful volunteer that was a wealth of knowledge for the different guns used through different conflicts so don't hesitate to ask if you are interested in a particular era Recommend 1-2 hours.

On our summer trip of national historic sites, we stopped at Springfield Armory. From my perspective, I wish they would have put more emphasis on the early significance of the armory (Shays’ Rebellion, Washington surveying the land, etc.) but in all it was a great and informative experience on the role the arsenal played in American history, especially various later war efforts.

A fantastic collection of American arms and some of the tools used to construct them.

This museum is a must for anyone with an interest in American military history. For two centuries, Springfield Armory made the weapons that America’s armies carried to war- from the frontier of the early Republic to the fields of Vietnam.

They are all on display.
There are videos of how they were made.
The rangers will show you how they evolved.

Very interesting, and worth a visit.

If I follow your instructions you arrive at a technical college on the right. You have to drive to the back of the college grounds to reach the museum. It is small but informative about gum making from the revolutionary war to 1964.
