This is an amazing and beautiful place to explore. Ancient cave dwellings of the Native Americans were very interesting. If you have the stamina to climb the 250+ steps back up, we suggest the Island Trail.

Steep short walk down steps as advertised, but then fairly level walk around the cliff dwellings .
Fantastic scenery and seeing the cliff dwellings all around the canyon was incredible.

The pictures I had seen online of the canyon did NOT do it justice. It's just beautiful. The cliff side dwellings that you can walk in are something you don't want to miss. The island trail is worth the effort. I would recommend watching the movie inside first so you get a sense of the history and your surroundings.

During our adventures visiting all the parks in the area, our experience at Walnut Canyon seemed the the most uninspiring (i.e., "meh"). Granted, we did not hike down the dozens of steps to get to the Island Trail (we did the Rim Trail), but from the top looking down, the payoff did not seem worth the effort. The ruins themselves did not appear particularly interesting or unique...and we've seen a lot of ruins around here. I found Wupatki more scenic and way more interesting.

Very hot the day we went. Make sure you bring lots of drinks. The hike isn’t long just stairs and at that elevation wears you down quick. Very hard to breathe.

View Ancient Native American Dwellings.
You could hike down and see them up close and in person or view them from above taking a very easy and short route.
We opted for the latter. It was okay. We found Montezuma Castle NM to be more rewarding.

Going down is Optional... Coming back up is mandatory.
This place is incredible, I didn't do much research prior to visiting and I found out that you walk down about 29 floors worth of steps to see the incredible monument.
Then you have to walk up 29 floors!!! Take your time, it's worth it.

The island trail hike is 1 mile round trip. What gets you is the elevation. I am 47, overweight, with bone on bone knees and arthritis. I used hiking poles and was able to do the hike. Going down was not difficult for me but coming back up was a challenge. I took my time and stopped as often as I felt I needed to. People were very friendly, both other hikers and park staff. The one mile hike took me 1 hour. If I can do it, you probably can too, but be careful. Be prepared with water, good shoes, hats, and anything else you might need.

My kids were road weary when we got here, on the drive between Sedona and Grand Canyon, so I had to drag them out of the car…but I was determined to check this place out after reading about it in my AZ travel guidebook. This was SUCH a cool place…and the kids (14, 17, 20) loved it! The hike takes you down and around the side of the canyon with beautiful views all around, and the cliff dwellings are just fascinating. Being able to step inside the dwellings, see black soot from ancient fires and imagine this way of life was like stepping into a history textbook. Amazing. Better, I think, for older kids, because the hike is a little tough coming back up (almost 300 stairs) and the dwellings may not be quite so fascinating to a little kid. And definitely wear good shoes and bring water! The gift shop was nice too. This was a highlight of our AZ trip for sure.

I think the cost is $20 per vehicle
How is the road going there? Is it paved all the way or rocky, dirt road? Do you need a 4w drive vehicle?

Hi - thank you for your review - how long do you think is 'ample' for this. We are not fast/not slow walkers.
Thanks!

We did the island trail in about an hour. We took our time and stoped to read the whole way. We spent another hour in the visitor center, watching the movie, checking things out and taking in the amazing view.

Which is the best trail to get into the dwellings? Is it just the island trail?
Gail B

Yes, you can see the remains of some dwellings from the Island Trail. Bring water if your going to walk the trail. The descent to the trail is not to bad but coming out is all up hill!

The main trail down starting with the railed stairs leads to the island Trail. It is your only choice to get to the dwellings. The first dwelling you can reach doesn't require that you go too long on the paved trail. I didn't like going past this point too far because it had just rained heavily the day before and the rubble made it too easy to slip. There is no guard rail at this point so once I got to the first dwelling I decided to head back. Also stay hydrated. The combination of elevation above sea-level and dehydration ( happens fast if you forget to hydrate) made it a little scary for me.

Hi,
I am not sure if it open during the shutdown but I believe it is on reservation land which is not tied to the government shutdown.
Sind Hunde erlaubt?

No I don't think so. The sentries are paved and there are many steps, so I think that the park authority doesn't allow dogs.
