Rosecliff is small compared to the other major Newport mansions like The Breakers, Marble House and The Elms, "small" being relative, of course, but it's still worth going to if you have the time.
Its' calling card is the massive Ballroom, where many of the greatest parties of the Gilded Age took place, which are still talked about today by fans of the era.

Known as the place to party in the Golden Age, Rosecliff was modeled after the Grand Trianon at Versailles, but smaller and reduced to a basic "H" shape. The mansion was also known as the setting for many Golden Age social events, including a party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini. Although the interior is not as elaborate as The Breakers, Marble House or The Elms, it is worth seeing. Additionally, the movies The Great Gatsby and True Lies have filmed scenes here. The Rosecliff's back lawn overlooks the Newport Cliff Walk and the Atlantic Ocean, a nice spot for taking pictures.

Attended a wedding at Rosecliff and it was an incredibly beautiful venue and worth visiting during the daytime for the museum.

Beautiful gilded age mansion. The guides from the preservation society were very informative and helpful. The grounds are gorgeous and perfect for some selfies.

This is another beautiful house in the Newport neighborhood. You can park here and walk to The Marble House which is a short block away. This house is not as elaborate as The Breakers or The Marble House but it is very beautiful inside. To me it's more realistic. The outside is gorgeous and you can get some beautiful pictures of the front of the house and the flower garden. The stairway is stunning and different almost looks like a heart.

This mansion is on a smaller scale, but also grand. I liked the grand staircase and the ballroom.
I decided to visit this house because it's where The Great Gatsby 1974 was filmed. There's behind-the-scenes information on the app which includes the self-guided audio tour.

We were a little underwhelmed with this house (after visiting The Breakers). Rooms were not as decorated with furniture and items as in the other houses. And the entire upstairs (that you could access) has been converted to a museum. The items on display were neat, but I'd rather see restored rooms. Tour on the app was very informative and I enjoyed that. No kid friendly audio tour for this house. Apparently they use this house a lot for weddings and events. I think next time I'd skip this and try another house instead.

On a previous visit to Newport, we had seen The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, and Chateau- sur-Mer. They were exquisite, lavish, and absolutely worth the price of admission. This time around in Newport we visited Rosecliff and Rough Point. I was not as impressed with what I saw at Rosecliff.
One of the first things you will notice here is the scarcity of interior furnishings. I asked a docent about this, and she said that Rosecliff is their “wedding mansion,” meaning that wedding receptions are often hosted here. Rather than have to move furniture in and out on a regular basis to accommodate these functions, they just leave the first floor of the mansion relatively bare. The result for me was an underwhelming impression left on visitors. Sure, you can still see tapestries, molded ceilings, chandeliers, paintings, and fireplaces; and yes, the billiard room is furnished to look as it once did; and sure, the grand staircase is magnificent. Other than these items, however, there is not much else that is original to the mansion. What is there is beautiful, but the problem is that not much is there compared to the other mansions.
On the second floor, what were once bedrooms are now individual exhibit rooms where you will find some rather nice displays of furniture, paintings, silverware, pottery and vases, candelabras, and clocks. Some of them are exquisite. However, the (odd) thing about these items is that many of them were furnishings that were originally in the other mansions. Judging from pictures posted by other reviewers five years ago, the second-floor exhibit was different then and consisted of clothing and fashion displays. Some of the current displays look more permanent because descriptive text for various items is painted on the walls. However, it’s probable that those exhibits change because the website says the current exhibition—called “Anything You Want” and focusing on treasures from Newport’s Gilded Age—runs through October 30, 2022.
I think the larger appeal for Rosecliff lies in the exterior. The mansion itself is beautiful with its sculptures, decorative accents, statues, trellises, rose garden, wrought iron balconies and doorways, and fountains. Of course, the view of the ocean is breathtaking. You can also see the Chinese Tea House at The Marble House from Rosecliff’s “backyard.”
Some Helpful Things to Know:
1. There is ample parking on site.
2. There are public bathrooms on site. Be advised, however, that they are on the lower level and must be reached by navigating stairs.
3. The mansion is only partially wheelchair accessible.
4. I don’t recall seeing interior seating, so if you need to rest or sit, it will have to be outside.
5. The tour is self-guided and at your own pace.
6. A few docents are on hand to answer your questions. There is also an audio tour.
7. There is a gift shop on site with a sizable choice of items. It is also located on the lower level.
If your time in Newport is limited and you can only see a few of the mansions, I would recommend putting Rosecliff further down on your list and giving priority to The Breakers, The Elms, and Marble House. You will be utterly astounded at their opulence.
Since many photos that have been posted are very redundant, I will instead post pictures of the current second floor exhibits, which are hardly represented.

The rooms at this summer cottage were not as well decorated as other Newport mansions. However, during our visit, this mansion hosted a fabulous gilded age exhibit. It is also used as a film set.

Wow! Absolutely beautiful mansion designed like Versailles! And, mostly accessible. There are two steps into the mansion. However, I was assured they would purchase a folding ramp for future visitors. There were two parts of the tour that were not accessible. The first part was the bathrooms are in the lower level and there’s a winding staircase to get down to them. If you cannot walk this is much too difficult. The second inaccessible area is the gift shop. It is also in the lower level. I could be wrong but I didn’t see a way to get down there outside of the building. That being said this is a wonderful home to tour. It does not take very long to tour the home. This mansion by far is my favorite! The art, the colors, the warmth regardless of the enormous room size was amazing. The grounds are lovely. The view of the ocean is mesmerizing.

Hi! There is no set dress code because the Pierre Cardin exhibition is just like any other museum exhibition you would go to. Dress as fashionably as you'd like - but definitely, wear comfortable shoes is the one thing I would recommend. You can walk around the mannequins and it's part of the Rosecliff admission price. Enjoy!
