The Isaac Bell house is unfurnished and the tour focuses on the architectural elements of the home, history and context, as well as the design details.
A more homey size, the house was closed for much of 2024 while doing a significant amount of external repair/restoration.
Whether they ever finish restoring all the interior rooms, you get to see a variety of states from room to room - replaced original wall paper reprinted from France, sections of original paper, carefully restored features, and a room with the sequence of how the fabric wall coverings were installed; as well as a variety of cultural influences on the wood details and features downstairs. The docent was very knowledgeable and discussed the original and restored elements.
TBH this is the kind of detail I would like to have about the other homes, so it was right up our alley for sure. Would have been happy to spend longer on the tour, an hour seemed too short. The tour did not go to the third floor.

Not open very often but definitely worth the effort. If you are interested in a unique Newport property put this house on your agenda. Our guide really knew his stuff. The idea is to show a property that is in the process of being restored.

The Isaac Bell House is an extraordinary historic house and a major place of interest in Newport Rhode Island.
In September of 2018, I brought and treated my wife and myself for a guided tour of the Isaac Bell House when celebrating our honeymoon in Newport, Rhode Island!!!
Designed by the renowned architectural firm, Mckim Mead & White during America’s Gilded Age, the house served as a summer residence for Isaac Bell Jr, a successful cotton broker & investor.
Today, the Isaac Bell House is a historic house museum, offering guided tours to the public, and due to its rich heritage and well designed architectural features, has been listed on the National Register Of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark.
During our guided tour, my wife and I learned much about the history of the Isaac Bell House and were very impressed with the use of the Shingle Style Architecture on its exterior. We also liked the wall-paneling and wooden floor which is featured in the house’s interior.

Always attracted by the picturesque massing and exterior details.
Having tour many of the mansions, I was surprised to find this one empty (except for a bed frame). But the story of the renovation and seeing the work in progress makes this a well worth seeing addition to a day aof Newport mansion tours.

The Isaac Bell Home has a guide to tour the home with and she was excellent. Note that this Newport home is run by the Newport Preservation Society and this home has tours at specific times. You have to actually go to the home to purchase tickets and they are limited to 12-15 people per tour. You can also stop by and reserve your time for any of the tours that day.
This home is rich in history, however it has very few pieces of furniture in it. It does showcase the beautiful home itself, fireplaces, fabric and wallpapers used, how renovations are done and much much more.

We saw this one at the end of the day, This was one of the darker mansions so it was difficult to see as there wasn't much daylight. I would love to have a porch like this house has.

Great architectural artistry in a mansion that has little furniture to compete with a well thought out building.

I last reviewed this in June 2012. Unfortunately our tour today was not that good. The guide seemed to be in a hurry and lacked the enthusiasm of other guides. The tour only lasted about 45 minutes and there was not really any opportunity for questions.
The house is open until Columbus Day. Tours are 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, and 4:30 every day. It now costs $90.00 for a membership for two and $105.00 for a family (two adults and all children 0-17.) A membership allows you to visit all 10 mansions as many times you want for a year. We joined NARM for $150.00 when we visited the Norman Rockwell Museum. Our NARM membership allowed us to visit all 10 of the Preservation Society museums for free as well as hundreds of other museums throughout the country.

The docents were wonderful and very helpful on how to navigate around town. The tour was good, but because of the lack of pictures of the home's history and splendor there were only a few things tat could be done to the interior just because the didn't know what it looked like back then. No fault of the tour, but a little disappointing.

How long does it generally take to tour the Isaac Bell House, and what is the price of admission? Thanks.

Hi Lillian - First, in case you were contemplating a visit soon, I should tell you that the Isaac Bell House is now closed for the season. It will reopen next spring. For your planning purposes, that is a guided tour house. When it is open, tours are offered hourly on the hour from 10 - 5. An individual house admission is $17.50 for adults, but the price goes down if you purchase a multi-house ticket. I hope this helps your planning.
