The oldest section of Newport, with most homes dating to the early and mid-1700s, meticulously restored and privately owned. A beautiful neighborhood to walk if you enjoy architecture and history.

As you walk the streets of the Point you are brought back in time. You can imagine the horses and buggies riding down the narrow streets where the houses sit tight together. The architecture is amazing and St John's Episcopal Church on Washington St is incredible. Washington, 2nd and 3rd Streets are the best streets in the Point. In mid June there is Secret Garden tour where you can go into the private back yards and see the displays of gorgeous gardens.

This is a relatively new and spotless hotel centrally located in Newport. It’s in the middle of everything in Newport. An easy walk to Bowen’s Wharf as well as those surrounding the harbor area with great views and various shopping opportunities. Restaurants are everywhere. That’s where we’ll stay our next trip.

The Point area of Newport has the largest collection of true colonial homes in America. A beautiful walk for adults interested in this type of houses but not much for the younger ones.

This is an area that you could walk through, or if you have a car can drive through. The houses and the architecture are great to see. Many of the houses have been saved by Doris Duke and her vision to retain the look of "old" Newport.

Of Newport. Stroll up and down the streets of this delightful part of town. History comes alive as you can imagine what life must have been back in the mid 1700's with horse and Buggies. The houses sit very tight together and many of them have historic plaques on them. Very close to the Bay so they are parks and public wharfs where you can get fantastic views of the Newport Bridge. The main streets are Third, Second and Washington and all the side streets are named after trees. You should definitely visit in June when they have the secret garden tours. Beautiful gardens behind these old homes which are not visible from the street. A pedicab is an easy and enjoyable way to spend some time going through the neighborhood.

Excellent guided tour of historic Newport arranged by Silversea. Interesting and well-prepared guide. Harbor cruise by tender a treat.

I guess these mansions were referred to as "cottages" by their wealthy owners in the late 19th century, but they are fantastic to tour now. This was our first time to Newport and we did not schedule nearly enough time. We want to come back and spend 3 days, not just 3 hours. These huge estates are beautiful and we would have loved to read about each one, but alas we just didn't have the time. And, there are a few different shopping areas with cool little stores. This is a great place and we will be back with more time allotted.

Articulating Newport's affect on me is difficult. The town has an ineffable quality to it that heals me. My weekend trip to Newport was purposed by my envolement with the food industry; I attended their annual food and wine festival that features the areas, as well as national, food industry forerunners such as Guittard Chocolate. Held at the imperial Marble House on the famous Bellevue Avenue, the weather could not have been more perfect nor the town of Newport more delicious. A foodie by birth, the event was a great accomplishment. From the savory to the sweet as well as to the celebrities like Jacques Pepin and Matha Stewart, the Food and Wine show was a sophisticated and fascinating way to spend the day. But Newport in general is a heart stealer. In fact returning to its historic cliffs and bustling ports always reunites me with the heart I'd left behind. This town is nourishment for a person's soul. I've sailed on day sails that launch from the down town wharfs, shopped in the specialty stores that line the narrow streets, cruised up Ocean Drive and reveled in the opulence of bygone days and sat for sunset in the cozy Adirondack chairs at Castle Hill. Always ALWAYS I find myself swaddled by the lullaby of the breezey beauty of Newport, RI. I live in CT so in terms of distance Newport is not far away but it FEELS like a different world. Even for New England, Newport is set apart by its destinctive balance of wealth and bohemian charm. You simply have not experienced New England until you've visited Newport. You will leave your heart behind though so be prepared to return year after year.
