Great of both sides of the mountain! We drove the road going from Prescott to Jerome. In fewer than 35 miles, Arizona State Route 89A goes from scrubby prairies up to mountains topped by pines and aspens. It’s quite the drive. Beginning from Prescott, it’s mostly rolling scrub oak hills. From there it winds and climbs steeply up the mountain. Wow! What a climb.
At the top, there’s an amazing view of valley below. The road winds down into a canyon with a big mining operation off to one side. Lots of copper pulled from the mountains here. And finally, the road travels to and through Jerome and down to Clarkdale. It is such an amazing drive. We loved it.

The road was in good shape, but not paved, but certainly worth the time taken to get to the top. Great stop

We live in Cottonwood and when the weather is hot and sunny with temperatures soaring to 112+ degrees, we pack a lunch and drive up to the campgrounds at the summit (7,000") of Mingus Mountain- usually 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Cottonwood. We usually eat at the Lookout Campground arriving after the weekenders leave the campsite. We thoroughly enjoy dining in the midst of the majestic tall Ponderosa Pines. We then walk around the campground enjoying the much cooler breeze and tranquil environment of the campground. The camp host are some of the nicest people we've met in a long time and we thoroughly enjoy visiting with the couple. This is a win-win place to enjoy not only cooler weathers but also a place to relax from the craziness of our work week and world.

Winding your way to the top of Mingus takes you through Jerome, which you will definitely want to explore. Continue on the curvy road as it snakes through the Mingus mountains. There a lot of switchbacks, but the views are spectacular. There is a pull out where you can take photos of the beautiful valley. Once a the top of Mingus, you will find hiking trails and campgrounds. This is well worth the drive.

This is a great drive and some of the scenery is fantastic, the distance you can see on a clear day is amazing.
The road over Mingus Mountain (AZ 89A) runs from Prescott Valley, (5300 feet / 1630 m), through the Prescott National Forest (Over 7000 feet / 2130 m), then through the Historic Town of Jerome (5000 feet / 1500 m) to Clarkdale (3500 Feet / 1000 m).
The distance from Prescott Valley to Clarkdale is approx. 24.5 Miles, the scenic part of the road is approx. 11.5 Miles long. We followed SR 89A from Prescott Valley, following signs for Jerome, Cottonwood & Sedona. The road can be narrow in places and some of the bends are very sharp, some of them are definitely “Hair Pin Corners” so if you are riding a motorcycle or bicycle take extra care on the corners, and don’t forget, if there is a large vehicle coming in the opposite direction, (a) you wont be able to see it until You and It are in the same part of the same corner, & (b),if you are in a right hand bend, the rear wheels of the vehicle coming in the opposite direction are going to be on your side of the centre line. So, If the speed limit signs shows 15MPH, It Means It!!
There are several “Pull Offs” and viewpoints, but very little shoulder and sometimes no shoulder at all. A lot of the canyon sides and rocks are red or salmon pink, these colors change throughout the day as the sunlight strikes them from a different angle, add to this the different greens & browns of the surrounding forest, and the effect is wonderful. With Prescott National Forest & Woodchute Wilderness (An area of over 5900 Acres) on the left & Mingus Mountain on the right, some of the scenery is spectacular.
As you descend towards Jerome you will see a huge “Tailings Pile” and some of the old copper mine buildings. The Historic Town of Jerome itself is well worth exploring, Historic Buildings, Mine Museum, Art Galleries & Small Wineries. There are also lots of Ghost Tours & of course Ghost Stories to accompany them. The roads in Jerome are narrow and very steep in places, so once again please be careful.

I love going up here and you can see the Red rocks of Sedona on a clear day. It's a short drive from Prescott and worth it to go and take in the views while having a picnic.

We took the drive from Sedona to Jerome and stopped to view the Mingus Mountains. The range is beautiful and majestic.
