Shari La is the former home of the fabulously wealthy Doris Duke, who built her dream home on this gorgeous peninsula and filled it with superb Islamic art. Visits start and end at the Hawaii Museum of Art in downtown Honolulu from where a bus leaves for the Diamond Head mansion. Once there, curators explain the pieces on show on walls, floors and ceilings, before visitors are allowed time to wander round inside and out and take photographs. Ice cream on the lawn concludes the visit.

Amazing place to tour. So interesting and gorgeous, both inside and outside this home. They take you in a shuttle van from the Honolulu Museum of Art and bring you back. Advance tickets are required and then don’t do tours everyday, It’s really wonderful and a must for art lovers.

Nature Vibe

It was an impeccably wonderful stay at the heart of Hawaii.

I felt like I was pampered and relaxed.

I have only a few hiccup on the overall stay!

We loved our visit to the home of Doris Duke, she has a fascinating story and her home and all of her collections are just out of this world!
I managed to book us tickets for our trip to Hawaii this time around (the last time we were in Hawaii we didn’t realise there are only a set amount of spaces per day and they need to be booked at a certain time).
There are guides there to talk to as you wish and you can wander around at your own leisure taking photos and simply just take it all in. A prime spot over looking the ocean and out to Diamond Head.
Didn’t want to leave!

We toured Shangri La through the Honolulu Museum of Art. The house is situated gorgeously--that beach head is truly the stuff of real estate dreams--and we enjoyed learning about Doris Duke and her unusual affinity for so-called "Islamic" art.

This is, of course, a rich person's private collection; not really a museum. As with Hearst Castle, the objects are arranged like decorative bric-a-brac--a Turkish chandelier here, a Moroccan roof there. The tile art in the courtyard is particularly stunning, offering perfect geometric accompaniments to the ocean views and small garden. None of it really makes any sense, as the docents admit. (There's also something vaguely perverse about viewing pieces from the Middle East in a tropical paradise.) But it's a fine window in a wealthy woman's obsession.

My favorite part of the tour was the talks. The art historians who work at Shangri La are well-versed in the historical and ethical questions raised by the objects in their custody. One very large and beautiful piece was looted from a Persian Mosque centuries ago, and the museum plans to repatriate it someday. The arguments for and against repatriation were fully explored--no woke posturing or imperious defensiveness here.

The only thing I'm still curious about is Doris Duke herself. She was a tobacco heiress with money, power, and a temper--according to Wikipedia she almost certainly killed an employee of hers who tried to quit. (Interestingly, Hearst was also involved in a suspicious death.) I didn't expect the museum staff to go into this, but it complicates the works on display even further.

Either way, I highly recommend a visit to Shangri La. You get a water and an ice cream sandwich at the end!

We booked directly on the HoMA website on June 1 for a date in July.

Easy to recommend. Each group that goes to Shangri La is small, and there are enough tour guides there that you can ask many questions of and get such detailed and passionate answers. If you get the chance, book it -- it's gorgeous.

A lovely living museum of Islamic art. The stuggle I find is an ethical one - it would be nice to know how some of the pieces were obtained, ethically I hope. The three brief talks were useful and informative. Book tickets early.

When at Honolulu a visit to Doris Duke’s former home, now a museum dedicated to art from the Islamic tradition, is a must see. At every turn beauty surrounds you, ceiling to floor. The glazed, terracotta tiles are the stand-out throughout the house; but those tiles in the Dining Room are breathtaking. Make certain to see Miss Duke’s white marble-clad bathroom; and look up at the ceiling there and in her dressing room. The number of days Shangri La is open are limited, as are the number of guests permitted per tour. The advice is book early, because this gem is not to be missed!

You book your Shangri-La ticket through the Honolulu Museum of Art website. Tickets sell out fast, so plan ahead. The $25 price is a great bargain because you also get the $20 admission to the museum for free (so come early and see the museum before your shuttle pickup time. One hour will give you an overview.) The museum arranges a 20-minute complimentary shuttle (each way) to Shangri-La. Upon arrival, you will have only about one hour to tour the house, but that is actually just about enough time.

There are very knowledgeable curators at the house. You will hear a brief introduction from one of them welcoming you in the house and giving you a very brief background of the house and Doris Duke, but then the curators stay close by and answer any questions you have. They also have two brief formal talks explaining two specific pieces of art, which are worth listening to.

The house itself is like stepping foot in a 700-year old Islamic structure, decorated in almost every way with art and tiles from all parts of the Islamic world. The furniture is the only thing that deviated perfectly from that provenance.

The grounds are gorgeous - make sure to step outside and admire the perfect symmetry of the pool and pool house, right above a stunning view of the ocean. The outdoor courtyards and hallways were a highlight.

And as a sweet farewell, you are handed water and an ice cream cookie sandwich of your choice before embarking the shuttle back to the museum.

Shangri-La is like an oasis tucked away in an upscale residential neighborhood of Honolulu, peace and beauty amidst all the bustle.
