Anchuca apparently means ‘happy home’ and it certainly gave off that vibe, with friendly guides on hand to answer any questions as we set off on our self guided tour. It’s almost 200 years old, and was used as a hospital during the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. Lots of fine art and antiques, it also operates as a bed and breakfast.

Our hosts, Mr. Tom and his mother, Miz Betty, were the picture of southern hospitality as they shared their home.

There were quite a few people from riverboat cruises who came for the tour, but most of the tour is self-guided, so we had no problems seeing what we wanted to at our own pace. We chatted with our hosts and got answers to our questions.

It's a beautiful home! We'd be interested in staying overnight there next time we're in town.

Enjoyed our self guided tour. There is a 7 minute introductory film narrated by a lady who grew up in the house along with a hostess giving some more information. The house is beautiful and the history interesting. Would love to go back and stay in this B&B some time.

I love these old mansions, and this is a good one. We started with a film about the property, narrated by a delightful southern lady who once lived here. Then we were able to walk through on our own and imagine what it must have been like long ago. It is a beautiful, elegant property, and very welcoming.

It was a beautiful home. The owner Tom was there to share his experiences. Many unique collections he has obtained over the years. Please visit. You won’t be disappointed!

We had a room in the old quarters for the help. Room was adequate for our needs although the king bed was too soft and perhaps needs to be replaced. That said, would not hesitate to stay here or recommend this spot. Lovely pool which we used both days during our stay. Took the house tour which was rich with history and enjoyable.

We stayed with our kids in the #10 room upstairs inside the mansion and it was beautiful! Everything was clean, the bedding was very comfortable and the amount of space we had was really nice. The house itself is decorated beautifully and feels very welcoming. The complimentary southern breakfast was delicious and the staff was very accessible and friendly. You can’t beat the location, on-site restaurant, or history of this place! We will definitely come back to stay here again.

Anchuca, also known as the Victor Wilson House, was built in 1830 and represents the first columned mansion in Vicksburg, Mississippi. It was originally built in the Federal style but a two-story portico was added to the front of the house in 1847 to reflect the Greek Revival style. Located at 1010 First East Street, it survived the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863 despite its proximity to the Confederate lines and the Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers. Joseph Emory Davis, Jefferson Davis' older brother and mentor, lived in the house from 1868 until his death in 1870. Jefferson Davis, former president of the Confederacy, made one of his last public addresses to the people of Vicksburg in 1869 from the front balcony of the house. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today, Anchuca is regarded as one of the first historic homes to become one of Mississippi's finest bed-and-breakfast inns. Its restaurant is rated as the finest in Vicksburg. The antebellum mansion is furnished with fine antiques and artwork representing the late 1700s to the mid-1800s. A visit to Anchuca begins with a short film that explains the history of the house before visitors are permitted to take a self-guided tour at their leisure. If you have the time, don't pass up an opportunity to enjoy dinner at Anchuca. It is served from 5 to 10 Monday through Saturday. Sunday brunch is served from 11 to 2.

Went for supper. Only us and one other in the place. Service was a bit slow. But for that they would have gotten one more green dot. As the steak filet, was one of the most tender and tasty of all time.
