My daughter and I went to Wolf Trap’s Filene Center to see Brandi Carlile in concert. This is a beautiful concert venue with just magnificent acoustics. We had a great time and would love to return for another concert. I wish we didn’t live 4 1/2 hours away but it was well worth the drive.

We have not visited Wolf Trap in several years and had the opportunity to get free tickets to the “Tribute to Marvin Gaye” show last weekend. We were in Row K and had an excellent view of the stage.
A quick overview: The grounds of Wolf Trap are fantastic and well-maintained. Besides the concert venue, there are two trails for hiking and bird watching. One trail is about 1.5 miles and the other 2.5 miles. Maps can be picked up at the Ranger Station or downloaded from their website. Picnic spots and tables are located throughout the park. Picnic baskets and/or coolers are allowed for those who purchased lawn seats. This includes alcoholic beverages. Concessions stands are available to purchase food and beverages, but they tend to be on the pricey side.
Free parking is available as well as a special area designated for handicapped and Encore Circle patrons. There is a somewhat steep hill to walk up to get to the entrance gates.
Now for the concert itself. Check-in was relatively quick considering bags were checked. It was a very humid day with little or no breeze. The gates covered seating area opens 30-minutes prior to the show. I did not enjoy the show because the sound was so loud, making it difficult to hear the singers. Additionally, bright strobe lighting randomly panned the audience during the performance which added to my displeasure. We left at intermission and had no trouble getting out of the parking lot quickly. On our way out I noticed the lawn area was super-crowded, a candidate for a Covid-19 super spreader. Most of the patrons in the pavilion wore masks.

Attended a 1930 concert with George Thorogood and Joan Jett. Unadorned raw rock and roll.
The venue, and the subject of this review, was a star in its own right. Being a part of the National Park Service, I was amazed at both the quantity and friendliness of the civil servant and security staff. We parked a seven minute walk from our seats in the sixth row of the orchestra.
An aside on the seats; when I first looked on the internet, the price for seats in the 5th row from the stage were $179. On a whim I checked the Wolftrap site and was able to pickup seats in the Sixth row for $82 - literally five days before the concert.
The acoustics were wonderful and parking ease of entry and exit was almost enjoyable. We're not regular concert goers but after this experience Wolftrap will be added to our list of pleasurable entertainment venues.

I made an evening visit to Wolf Trap. There wasn't a concert going on at the time, so the park was fairly empty. However, it's a nice place for an evening walk. I took a quick look at the Filene Center, which is an open-air venue. The structure itself has a very interesting design. From there, I walked down to the river, past a smaller stage. There's a trail which meanders through the forest along a little stream. I also noticed that there were several pavilions along the ridge which appear to be newly constructed.
Overall, Wolf Traps looks to be a great place to attend a concert. It's also a great place to go hang out and enjoy the outdoors.

If your looking for a nice Sunday activity for a cold winter walk look no further. After a nice brisk walk hot chocolate and snacks are in order to make romantic memories with the one you love.

Had to stop here was part of the national park service. What a beautiful venue with awesome architecture. Would love to hear a performance here one day to hear the acoustics. Quick stop unlike most other national parks not a normal visitor center. Had to really look for where I get a passport stamp.

This review is for the hike. We've gone multiple times with a 3 and 5 year old. They love the hike, it is about 3-4 miles total, easy to find and signed, and just the right level of challenge. It follows Wolf Creek all the way and circles around the back of the performing arts center, so lots to look at. There's even a small boardwalk section. We actually visited during the pandemic so there was never a concert/parking issues to worry about and it was always completely empty. Wouldn't take someone with walking difficulty though as there is elevation gain and it is a real trail.

Wolftrap is a terrific venue for entertainment, thanks to Mrs. Shouse's gift to Vienna.
The theater offers everything from concerts to comedians, ballet to Broadway, and rock to radio shows. We've been to many shows and always enjoyed them, either sitting on the lawn under the stars or on seats inside the open-air pavilion . Parking is free, picnic dinner is available next to the theater, and free van rides are available up the hill. Many concerts are free, such as those on national holidays (ie the Fourth of July with the Armed Forces Band) .Last shows we saw were : ABBA tribute band and Swan Lake ballet.

I’ve attended concerts here for 20 years. It’s always a wonderful setting with top talent. Rent the cushions and pack a picnic for lawn seats!

Wolf Trap is a great place to see a show. Great sound, beautiful design but I had no idea that there were trails through the park that led to other little special spots! We rode our bikes along the trails and it made for a beautiful day!

Are we allowed to bring our own water bottles to covered areas of wolf trap? Or must they be disposable water bottles

"Patrons may bring water into the covered seating area. Other beverages (wine, beer, mixed and soft drinks) may only be brought into the covered seating area in official Wolf Trap Cups, with the lid in place. Wolf Trap Cups are reusable and spill-safe, and may be purchased at the Gift Shops and Concessions."

Is there anything decent worth seeing in this season? I realize there's probably no music, but what about scenery?

Nothing really. The shows combine with good weather are the attractions.

How is the restaurant there? Should I go with buffet or the picnic option?

Convenient, but expensive. If you don't have time to cook, you can always put together a picnic from one of many grocery stores in the area. They all have a good assortment of ready made foods.
Are the mosquitoes bad. If it's a hot evening in July do I need to worry about covering up to not get eaten alive? Is dress casual nice or really casual?

We have not had any issue with mosquitoes, but perhaps take repellant, just in case. It is wonderful there, that noone judges your attire. You can go casual as you like or dress up. You see a little of both. I do suggest to take a light jacket or wrap, as it can get a little cool, as the evening progresses. Have fun!

When there is a musical performance of a film score and the film is shown with it, do you hear the film audio, or is there closed captioning?
Can you bring low chairs (beach chairs) on the lawn or only blankets?
Gfallstraveller
Great Falls, VA82 bidrag
Very low beach chairs. But best to just bring a nice fluffy blanket.
How loud are the acoustics in the orchestra section, for a voice/piano/small band type performance? Will I need ear protection to keep my ears from ringing afterwards?
heacockb
Reston, VA100 bidrag
This depends on who's sound system the group is using. Wolf Trap has excellent acoustics and excellent sound system. However, some entertainers insist on their own sound gear. Sound on the lawn is always good because it it always provided by Wolf Trap.
