This ended up being our most repeated visit of the two weeks. We went predawn one day morning noon evening to dusk. We saw multiple bears dear birds. Bear were conveniently across a deep ravine but direct line from camera only 75 yards. They were aware but no interested in us like they also knew the ravine was there. Several long lens pros were up there and secret got out as 2 weeks passed There are some folks who drive like it is in town and pull offs are pretty easy to do though someplace yoking of make them up yourself. One long spot of tree tunnel woods was gorgeous.

This drive is located off of Grand loop drive driving toward the east entrance road/Lamar Valley and is about 6 miles of unpaved road that runs the same direction as the loop. You will end up back on the Grand loop drive only further down. It is a very long 6 miles as it is slow driving and if no wildlife are around, not much going on. We immediate saw to buck mule deer as we turned off onto the drive and thought it would be great but saw nothing else the whole way. Depending on what type of driving you like, this is of course beautiful and off the beaten path but if you like the action at Lamar Valley, you might just want to get on over there directly.

Best drive ever! We have been to Yellowstone before and did this drive for the first time this week. Lots to see and so many bison. DELIGHTFUL! On the way we saw black bear and Rocky Mountain Goats, sunshine, rain, hail and snow.

We were exploring and decided that we would take a risk and explore the 6 mile long, one-way, dirt road. It was fun to slow down and take in the scenery, however we ended up in a group of cars going extremely slow so we were at their mercy. Our compact car did not have any trouble with the terrain but we did take it easy. We did not see any animals during our late morning trek.

I rode my bike on this road and blew by the sign that says no hiking from April something until June something. It’s closed for good reason. I goes through prime grizzly habitat. I biked within about 150 ft of a grizzly that had just killed a elk calf. We had a few second stand off and I turned around and left. I shouldn’t have been there. The signs say to stay out until sometime in June. What a beautiful ride that was. Came back and drove it in July. Saw some bison. Stay out until it opens. Zoom on the photo

Take your camera. It's located between Mammoth Hot Springs and Tower Junction on the Grand Loop Road 9.6 miles from Mammoth. It's a one-way 6-mile dirt road with the entrance located @ GPS 44.958009, -110.541765. It takes about thirty minutes to drive but well worth stopping along the way to enjoy the lord's creation. The last time I drove it took me 1 1/2 hours because I stopped many times.

Yes, the scenery is nicer than on the main road, but the road is a little rough, and if you don't see any wildlife it just becomes a scenic drive, but there are many scenic drives in Yellowstone. Unless you are driving a low clearance sports car or something similar, the road is manageable under most circumstances.

This drive is about 6 miles or so of one-way dirt road. We drove it easily in a Subaru, so it is not a challenge to drive. It is rough and washboarded in many places, but if you just take it at a reasonable speed (15-20 mph), it's not a problem. The scenery along this road is great (as is most of Yellowstone, of course). The road goes through a number of different types of areas, with varying geology and plant & animal life. It's all beautiful. I would not say that it's better than other places in Yellowstone, but there is a lot less traffic, it feels more isolated, and because you're best off driving it slowly, you get more of chance to take it all in. I'd definitely recommend this drive, especially if you've already driven the main roads in the area once or twice.

Decided to go off the main road only to find on turning that it is said to be a rough road (perhaps a sign earlier would have stopped me turning). However, once on the track we had to keep going for the six miles as it is one way only. To say it was rough was an understatement, there were more ruts in it that an old stagecoach route. After about a mile we found ourselves behind othe gullible travellers. Relief came as we returned to the road!
