This is a 5 mile hike 2.5 miles each way. It’s an easy hike on gravel. The falls are magnificent! We went early in the day so we had the gals area to ourselves. We did the extra hike up to prismatic but it was too foggy to see anything. Started to get crowded as we walked back. It’s absolutely stunning. Would recommend.

It’s about 5 miles round trip to the falls and back. It starts as a boardwalk but turns into a dirt trail, so wear appropriate shoes and have water. The trail takes you through beautiful lodge pile pine forest and you end at a creek and the falls - 200 feet high! From the falls you can turn around and hike back. Take the offshoot of the trail to hike up to the Grand Prismatic overlook it is the very best view of Grand Prismatic. A gorgeous hike overall

Its truly worth the hike to get to this location. We had small kids join us and its best to be prepared with walking shoes, and a lot of water and snacks. Enjoy the falls before making your way back again.

Located in Yellowstone National Park about 6 mi/9.7 km north of Old Faithful, the Fairy Falls Trail is a 4.8 mi/7.7 km out-and-back trail that takes hikers to one of Yellowstone’s most picturesque waterfalls. My wife and I hiked this trail on a chilly (38°F/3°C) morning in late September 2022.

NOTE: Be sure to check the park website or one of the visitor centers before attempting this hike to confirm that it is open. The trail doesn’t open until late May due to winter conditions and is subject to periodic closures due to bear activity. Yes, this is considered “bear country” so be prepared to take proper precautions when hiking this trail.

The rather small Fairy Falls parking lot is about 1 mi/1.6 km south of the Midway Geyser Basin. I would recommend getting there early – we arrived around 7:30am and were the third car there; when we left several hours later, the lot was overflowing. From the parking lot you will walk on a bridge that takes you across the Firehole River and then turn right onto Fountain Flats Drive, which is a wide, flat dirt-and-gravel road that will take you past the backside of the most famous hot spring in the park, Grand Prismatic Spring.

NOTE that shortly thereafter the trail splits; to continue on the Fairy Falls Trail keep going straight. If you turn left, you will find yourself on a very steep (105 ft/32m incline) 0.5 mi/0.8 km spur trail that will take you to the Grand Prismatic Overlook, where you get the best view in the park of the Grand Prismatic Spring. We took the spur trail in the hopes that we would get one of those post card views of the spring, but the cold weather helped to create so much steam that it almost totally obscured the view of the spring’s stunning colors. If you continue down the spur trail, it reconnects with the Fairy Falls Trail.

You will eventually enter the main portion of the trail, which is relatively flat and takes you through dense, young lodgepole pines. You’ll know that you’re approaching the falls when the trail suddenly turns toward a meadow, narrows and becomes rockier, and begins a slight incline. By then you should start hearing the falls.

Fairy Falls itself is a tall (200 ft/61m), thin and attractive waterfall that has a very pleasant viewing area. In fact, there is a small bench close to the front of the falls where you can have a snack and relax before heading back the way you came.

The trail is rated "easy” by most publications, and given the flat terrain I tend to agree; however, adding the steep spur trail would probably boost the difficulty level closer to “moderate.” We thoroughly enjoyed the Fairy Falls Trail, have great memories of it and would highly recommend it to fellow visitors to Yellowstone National Park.

Nice hike mostly level so the 5.2 mile round trip isn’t hard. Definitely take the side hike early on which is on the left for a great view of the Grand Prismatic Spring. The hike to Fairy Falls goes through a forest that was ravaged by the 1988 fire that burned 36% of Yellowstone. Fairy Falls is almost a 200 foot drop and it was beautiful. Went early in the morning so we had the falls to ourselves for about 15 minutes. It’s a nice place for snack or lunch.

After walking up to see the grand prismatic overlook you can continue on the trail to the fairy falls which is about a 5 mile hike. The walk is mostly flat even trail through the forest with not much to see. Once you get to the waterfall there wasn’t the amount of water falling that I was expecting. We were there in mid October 2022 so the spring rain and snow melt was done however it’s an interesting waterfall to see. If you have the time and want to go for a leisurely walk it’s a great place to walk out to the falls.

The falls themselves are beautiful and worth a visit. But the hike itself is a bit monotonous through a featureless forest of pines. My 13 and 11 year olds were getting bored/antsy by the end. The hike is super manageable with very little elevation gain. There was lots of foot traffic. Throw in the spur to the Grand Prismatic overlook to enjoy beautiful views. Just prepare to sharpen your elbows as the overlook platform was really crowded during our sunny mid day trip in June.

Very Beautiful and amazing waterfall easy hike because it didn’t have much elevation. And there wasn’t much people on the hike so it was peaceful.

Although the falls was not at it's peak, it is still beautiful. The walk up to it was a beautiful hike through the woods. The overlook to Grand Prismatic Springs is on the way and is not to be missed.
