Pretty easy hike and beautiful quiet lake with lily pads. We ran into two Bison along the path. Limited parking. Lake spot is a nice break and beautiful scenery. Petrified tree is nearby.

We actually saw a coyote as we walked up. He was watching us and as much as we were watching him. Lillies on the water were beautiful. My husband said if her were a moose this is where he would be!

My family hiked this on July 7 and we saw a bear walking toward us on the trail. The bear popped up in front of us. We just casually walked backward for about 50 yards and he/she continued along with us then veered off to walk up a hill beside the trail. Not aggressive at all, but we did not finish the trail. I was scared but my husband assured me that with the bear spray he had we'd have been fine. Just please be bear aware.

A beautiful trail with areas that are fairly steep. Lakes and vistas are really lovely. Did not run into many other hikers at that time. Lots of varied views and terrains and made a nice 4 mile hike.

The parking lot for this trail was extremely busy, so I thought we'd be sharing the trail with lots of others, but we only saw two other people walking which was bliss.
The trail starts behind the Roosevelt lodge, and is very well signposted. It's a strenuous uphill slog at the start, but after a while it levels out and when you get to the lake it's gorgeous and peaceful.
We passed a few bison - they didn't bother us - and as it's a bit back country, bear spray is a must, although we didn't see any. Plenty of fur about, animal tracks and scat, maybe they saw us first?
The lodge was closed for the season, but a ranger told us to jump over the fence. Nothing naughty about it, he was open and said just jump straight over!
It's about 3 miles in total, but very steep in places. The effort is well worth the peace and quiet.

If you are tired of crowds or have little children with you this is it. It is super easy and on practically flat area compared to others track. No motors no people just soft buzzing of animals and nature. And then if no bears are around nice picking at the lake.

The Lost Lake Loop is a 2.8 mi/4.6 km moderately-rated hike. The trail starts from Roosevelt Lodge, climbs up a hill to Lost Lake and the Petrified Forest parking area, and descends down to the lodge.
My husband and I did this hike on a Friday afternoon in August. There is sufficient parking at the trailhead. While the trail was empty and peaceful (we didn't encounter anyone), it wasn't very interesting. The initial ascent to Lost Lake is quite steep - 300 ft/91 m over 0.4 mi/0.7 km. Lost Lake is very scenic and was the highlight of the trail. There is only one sad looking petrified tree beside the parking lot and not worth stopping by as there are tons of petrified trees in the geyser basins. The view from the hill was good. We brought 2 L of water for 2 people, which was sufficient.

Went here on a Tuesday and it was a great hike! We started out from the petrified tree and hiked to the lake. We almost turned back but didn't see any wildlife yet. So we kept going to the T junction in front of the cliff and turned right and went into the woods. As soon as we did, we encountered mule deer!!
The other unique thing about this hike was the tons of ground squirrels or marmots (not sure which it was). They were everywhere and a funny break from reality!
Please do!

This trail can be very steep if you do it in a counterclockwise direction so I do it clockwise from the Roosevelt lodge dining room trailhead. It passes quite close to the most accessible of all of Yellowstone's petrified trees and goes through country missed by most visitors! I carried my daughter on my back up and over this trail the first time I hiked it back in 2001. Last year, I ran the trail with good friends. It's breathtaking, providing a beautiful view.
