We didn't really did the hiking to the top but it's still breathtaking to see it from the distance, preferably from the glacier point.

Exhausting self guided, self driven hike from camp all the way up to the top of Half Dome and all the way back to camp. They didn’t have tour guides or charge you much (or maybe anything) to hike when I went as a teenager. This would have been May 1998 I believe. Possibly May 1997. I was just 16! Crazy. Great memories. One of the greatest moments of my 43 years. Magical. Bucket list stuff. I believe the whole round trip took over 12 hours and possibly a couple hours more than that. Worth it in every way. Go do this.

This a very challenging but very rewarding hike, and only should be attempted if you are in good shape. It's approximately 16-18 miles round trip. We ended up parking at Curry Village and walking a half mile to Happy Isles where the trailhead is.
My two cents:
I highly recommend leaving early, like 5:00 in the morning. You will want an early start and the cooler morning weather/shade. I brought a headlamp but didn't end up using it; it was light enough at that point.
The best decision I made was to wear shorts and a tank top. I did switch out the tank for a lightweight shirt to protect my shoulders that got burned the day before on the Upper Yosemite Trails hike, because there is no shade or covering once you hit the subdome. Yosemite is HOT; after my hike the day before I knew I had to forget all the recommendations of wearing pants and layers, etc. I wore very sturdy hiking shoes with good grip; this is a must.
I used a light raincoat when climbing the steps next to Vernal falls b/c I didn't want to get soaked at 6am; when we passed by on the way down, I was like, "bring it." The water from the falls felt amazing after trekking in the hot sun.
I brought about 5.5 liters of water and used almost all of it. I had my 3-liter pouch plus several extra water bottles, several of which I had mixed in electrolytes. These are a lifesaver for when you really need to replenish and refuel. I brought a sandwich, about 6-8 protein bars, 5 packages of fruit snacks, and a few energy gels. I ate almost everything. Bringing enough fuel is essential.
I am no stranger to the sun, but I reapplied sunscreen several times throughout the day and wore a hat and sunglasses. I also used my bug spray two or three times.
Once you reach the ranger, there is still some climbing before you even reach the cables. Another hiker on the trail called them "stairmaster on crack" because they are no joke. This part is HARD, and honestly I think harder than the cables. Take your time.
Once you reach the cables you will want to make sure you have gloves. This part is daunting; just take it one rung at a time. This part will take time because everyone goes at their own pace and you've got people coming up and coming down. Everyone is patient with each other, which is a good thing. Coming down the cables is much easier than going up.
When you reach the top you feel a rush of excitement and accomplishment and it is an incredible feeling. The views are fabulous. There's plenty of room to walk around and take great pictures.
Just remember, you still need to hike back, which requires a lot of work and energy. You will need just as much fuel/water.
The email from the park told us to bring a topographical map of half dome. I bought one at the Explorer Center and never used it. The path is pretty clear the whole way and there are quite a few hikers on this trail.
There are three bathrooms on the hike, but they are all towards the beginning. Once you have gone four or so miles, there are no bathrooms. Bring tissues; I ended up having to use mine to take care of business.
It was a fabulous and exhausting experience and I am so glad I did it. This was a bucket list item and I am so glad I accomplished it. I've never experienced anything like it. There are great views and scenery throughout the hike. Just remember to be prepared: physically, mentally, and with all the necessary gear and fuel.

Half dome was one of our favorite hikes we’ve ever done. We started at the valley floor and made it up the cables. It can be done in a day, but it’s a serious hike. Need to start before the sun comes up and be prepared for most of the day. Take plenty of water and snacks. Gloves and harnesses are recommended to go up the cables.

Another monolith present in the park, soaring into the skies, has various observation points.... Impressive!

An iconic landmark, very scenic and interesting wherever it is viewed from.
I did not climb it, but it forms the centrepiece of views from Columbia Rock, Glacier Point, Washburn Point, Panorama Trail etc.
One of the most interesting formations I've seen anywhere.

What time are the hiking permits valid. As in what time can you start the ascent or what would be the latest you could start the ascent. I'm assuming the park ranger doesn't live there and hikes up on a daily basis to check permits.
Skrevet 15. mai 2021
In case anyone sees Jen G's attempts to break the law in a National Park (with a Federal Court in Yosemite Valley!), get a permit. The rangers don't 'live' at the permit check station but they are camped nearby. Either follow the rules or visit someplace else.

I received 2 permits to climb Half Dome on June 12th of this year. I am trying to swap the permit to the week prior, any day from May 31st to June 5th. Let me know if you have permits within that time frame and are willing to swap. Thank you in advance!

Does anyone know which canvas tents (at Half Dome) are:
-the most secluded?
-the most hilly terrain?
Thank you in advance :-)
Skrevet 26. februar 2019
I'd start with whether you can get into the park, and then what is available. Only one tent site now in Yosemite Valley plus 2 others, as I write on 5 March 2019. Winter. Latest info on their website which I tried to share with you but TA will not allow. (Imagine)
National Parks website can be found easily, if not here.

Hello
We are 3 adults and one 7 year old boy driving from Orange County all the way to Yosemite Park at then end of December. We are staying 3 nights in Sequoia National Park and 3 nights in Yosemite national park. I am looking for top activities to do in winter. I know it’s hard for my 7 year old son to hike in the snow, so my friends can do the hiking without us. Can you give me some ideas what we can do together and what are the experiences my friends don’t want to miss?

I don't know any little kids that don't like playing in the snow! You do know that there's a ski resort in Yosemite...don't you? Take him skiing/boarding or to just tube down the hill.
Try an internet search for "travelyosemite." Then check out the WINTER link in the menu.

Bom dia !

Hi
I recommend that you use the National Park Service page for many details about the reservation only Half Dome hike. You need to enter the lottery for a permit to make this hike next year.
I also recommend that you read the Half Dome topic in the Top Questions on the right side of the Yosemite forum page.
My 3rd recommendation is to search for MrHalfDome This person loves hiking Half Dome and has created a great resource.
-> is it a beaten dirt trail or loose rocks and gravel? Does the trail pass through the trees? Are there points of support on the way, such as toilets and access to drinking water? {Google translation}
Yes, it's paved in one section, it's dirt in some sections, it's loose rocks on dirt in some sections, and it's slippery granite for the final ascent.
Yes, some of it is in the trees. Some of the hike is alongside waterfalls. And some is out in the open.
Yes, there are a few places with toilets and drinking water at lower elevations. But you should still carry lots of water with you.
Many folks begin around 5:30 am.

Hi. I’m from the uk and plan on visiting California to do Yosemite half dome. If I book a guided walk will my permit be included?
B
Skrevet 20. juni 2018
Is the guided hike to half dome through an outside tour agency? If so, yes it’s possible that the permit will be included. Would ask the tour agency directly.

First time this Summer. Biggest question. Am I good with just gloves? Do you suggest a harness or not?
Skrevet 12. mai 2018
Gloves are a must, but you may want a harness to clip in when you are resting (as you will need to). The cables can get crowded and you may be forced to step outside the cables. Try to avoid doing so. The trail is EXTREMELY steep and the granite is polished in places leaving little in the way of traction. Great effort will be required to keep from slipping downwards. Clipping in all the way up and down is not practical, but it is better to have the harness and not use it than it is to not have it and wish you did. Congratulations on securing a rare permit!

How crowded is Yosemite in early September after Labor Day
Skrevet 28. mars 2018
Hi
This is the seldom viewed Q&A feature for Half Dome.
General questions like yours will get immediate attention if you ask on the active Yosemite forum.
Yosemite is still quite busy in September. Expect it to be crowded pretty much like June or maybe early July. August is the busiest time.
Skrevet 11. april 2018
Since my friend and I are Seniors, can we drive through Yosemite and see the Dome and falls? Thanks for any suggestions.
Skrevet 26. mars 2018
Hi
These are great questions to ask on the TripAdvisor forum. (This is a Q&A feature about the big rock!)
When you post a new thread on that forum, include your travel dates & interests. If you want to start with some research, I recommend the Top Questions on the right side of the Yosemite forum page.
Some seniors are backpacking, some are traveling with an extended family group, some are just buddies on a lightly active sight-seeing trip, and some are something else. If you share information about your travel style, that will help forum members to give you the most relevant replies.
