We booked a six hour private beginner climbing lesson. It was the most expensive activity on our 3 week vacation on the west coast, but we knew it would be a once in a lifetime activity. The location was (obviously) beautiful, climbing above the trees and looking across to see half dome is something I will never forget.
However, we were all disappointed with the quality of the instructing. Granted it is October and they are probably getting a little bored towards the end of the season. I don't want to call out the individual because maybe it was a one-off. However, I do want the school to know, so that they can improve their own training with regard to customer service. I'm sure the instructors are probably among the best climbers in the world, but their level of customer service leaves something to be desired.
I will list the main issues below:
- We were told to bring our own packed lunch. I then thought it was strange that in the middle of the lesson, the instructor left our location to go to a local cafe. I essentially paid for him to walk to a cafe, wait in a queue and walk back. It's only around 20 minutes but that seems not right when we were told to bring our own lunch.
- There was another lesson next to us (from the same school). The two instructors spent most of their time talking and complaining about their company pay, benefits and health insurance.
- For us beginners, climbing anything higher than 2 or 3 meters feels like a big deal. Obviously to the instructors it is not. So it was annoying when we were stuck or panicking on the rock, and the instructor was often not there to give reassurance or advice. They were often chatting to the other instructor (I remember being stuck and panicking, while the instructor was chatting with his friend about his burrito lunch. My friend had to practically shout to get the instructor's attention so he could help me). He would also often randomly leave to go somewhere round the corner for more than just a couple of minutes (maybe to go to the toilet?). Not a problem if he said when he was going and that he would only be a minute. I've been a ski instructor, and I would expect these climbing instructors to be 100% present and attentive, especially when clients feel out of their comfort zone.
Either way, I do not regret booking the class. But as the school has very little competition within the area, they may have little reason to show top quality customer service. Although because of this experience, we did not tip. We would happily have tipped if the instructing was acceptable.

We spent 8 hours hiking with Nick in the Yosemite Valley area, and it was very well worth it. He was very energetic, knowledgeable, and personable. While we did spend some time on the paved paths, we preferred, and greatly enjoyed, hiking up the hills and mountains. It was an excellent day.

My family had a wonderful day rock climbing with our guide Jake. We felt safe all day and had a lot of fun. We had people in our group with different levels of climbing experience and Jake made sure to have something for everyone at all times. Great day, thanks Jake!!!

The guides at YMS are INCREDIBLE!! Drew and James were fantastic guides. I want to highlight Drew as he was my guide for a solo climbing trip. He was immensely well prepared and his encouragement and experience were instrumental in helping me complete my bucket list task! Climbing granite is no joke but instructions and help from the guides made it possible. If you’re considering this, it is well worth the money!! Plus check out this awesome picture Drew took from the summit!! THANK YOU AGAIN DREW

This was a perfect experience for our family of two semi-experienced tweens and two parents with zero climbing experience. We went out with Greg, who was a fantastic guide and really helped my kids to challenge themselves and have a great time, while at the same time providing encouragement & info for the novices. There were two other guides with similar groups in the same area, so between the three groups they set up 5-6 different routes, so we had the right amount of variety.
I'd originally wanted to climb in the Valley given our overall itinerary, but the person who took my reservation strongly encouraged us to climb in the Tuolumne Meadows area instead given the possibility of extreme heat in the Valley in July. We were able to rearrange some plans to make this work and are glad we did; the temperatures in Tuolumne plus the breeze up on the rock made for a comfortable day (also, lovely views).

The guides at YMS are literally among the best in the world. If you're headed to Yosemite to Big Wall, these folks will keep you safe and sound. Great crew.

We fulfilled a bucket-list ambition to backpack from Tuolomne Meadows to Yosemite Valley (4 day trip). Our guide from the Yosemite Mountaineering School made the trip memorable. He tailored the trip to our preferences - food, campsites, pace, and interests. He had in-depth knowledge of the park history, geology, and ecology - and was attentive and patient with us as novice backpackers. I highly recommend both the Yosemite backcountry and the Yosemite Mountaineering School.

We used the Mountaineering School on two of the five days we hiked in Yosemite. The guides were not necessary for our hikes but they enhanced the experience. Both gentlemen radiated love of nature and of Yosemite. Walking with them helped us appreciate the valley more.
I think it also helped me do more aggressive hikes and certainly enhanced the pace. Also the guide was able to spot a bear just off the trail.
Will, the reservation specialist, was also very helpful figuring out the schedule for the valley hikes.

This guide service is very expensive for a mediocre climbing experience. I should’ve never went with their service. Way overpriced. I’m not really getting any knowledge for climbing. The climb the guide took me was too easy (I’m a semi-new climber). The guide was meh.

Where do I go to book a rock climbing lesson with Yosemite Mountaineering School? I can't seem to find contact information to make a booking online. Thanks.

Hello,
I am looking for a place to rent a crashpad near Yosemite Valley for some bouldering. Do you happen to do that or know of a place in the surroundings?
Many thanks,
Dorien
