This was the first time we hiked to North Dome, and it was well worth our time. This relatively level hike, about 9 miles round trip, is deceptive as it’s about 8,000’ elevation. The thinner air was noticeable to me.
Although North Dome is about 500’ lower than the trailhead, there were so many ups and downs that it measured about 600’ elevation gain on the way to North Dome and 1,100’ elevation gain on the way back. I was so tired!
Another first for us was seeing California Pinefoot. We saw lots of bright red Snowplant, so at first we thought this was an albino snowplant. But it appears to be young emerging Pinefoot. So cool!

This is a great hike. The end is all up hill, and because the beginning is all down hill, it’s a rough hike back up to the road after you’ve already hiked approx 10 miles (according to my fit bit). Stunning views of half dome that are so worth it! My 10 and 13 year old did it with me, it was difficult for them but we took some breaks along the way. I believe it took us around 3.5 hours total, that includes the break at the top enjoying the view!

A good option for those seeking an alternative perspective of Half Dome without the longer distance required to troop up to Clouds Rest. Most of the hike itself is just a typical walk through the woods (with a slight downward bias) but then gets to a more tricky climb down the side of the mountain before climbing back up again to the edge of North Dome - doable, but do prepare your crew in advance to minimize grumbles about them not anticipating this part of the hike!
The views from North Dome and the valley are quite nice, though (given one day) I would rather do Panorama Trail from Glacier Point to Nevada Falls and back to the valley. After doing that, then consider the North Dome or Clouds Rest hikes if Half Dome views are what you want.

We hiked to North Dome. The first several miles of the trail is through the forest and is a fairly easy/moderate hike. You will pass a number of stream crossings, which you can easily get across by walking on the rocks or a fallen tree branch. Near the top, is a short side hike to Indian Rock which has an impressive view and is a fairly steep hike up. Careful going back down, the gravel is slippery, as I found out (literally) the hard way. Then, continueing to North Dome, you walk down a very large granite rock. When you are near the end, the trail to North Dome will be on your left and is marked with a bunch of rocks, lining the start of the path. The first part of the path contains an approx few meter fairly sharp incline. You almost need to slide down it (and wonder how on earth you are going to get back up -- but you will). The rest of the walk is moderate/easy through the forest and then on to North Dome. The scenery from North Dome is magnificent. On your left is a great view of Half Dome and on your right, a great view of Yosemite Valley. It was really worth it and I would do it again. The hike back up is not that bad until you get to that steep slide part. It is easier to go up on on the left side of that short incline. Then you need to walk back up the granite rock - which seems a whole lot longer and steeper on the way up. Then, you again hike through the forest, which is mostly downhill, and pleasant with a not too bad incline up the last 2 miles or so.
Bring plenty of water and your lunch! There is a restroom (not flush toilets) at the trail head/parking lot. We saw no restrooms anywhere along the hike.

When you go to Glacier point, you can see the North dome, it's just a dome shape. Basket dome is nearby. it seems that some people there is also a trail for you to hike to the North Dome, but it will not be an easy one, and will take long time to get there.

North Dome hike has always been my favorite hike. I am very fond of Yosemite park. Whether it is riding your mtn. bike. all over the park, or climbing the many walls. this park has it all.

I have hiked Half Dome and it is amazing to stand on top and look across and down to the valley. It may be more impressive (and a whole lot less effort) to get the view of Half Dome that North Dome offers. If you are an experienced hiker/backpacker it is a simple walk in the forest, if you choose the Porcupine Creek Trailhead. It is roughly 5 miles of hiking in, if you detour to Indian Rock (absolutely do the detour). The hike through the forest is nice, but unimpressive. The payoff is at the end when you can stare the short mile and a half across the valley at the rock face of Half Dome. Go for sunset. Watch the golden hour. Enjoy the hike back with headlamps or stay awhile and enjoy the stars. Hiking up from the valley floor is also possible, if you want more of a Half Dome hike experience.

This is a pretty easy hike, took a little under 2hr each way, without any difficult climbing but I hiked from the north at Tioga Pass road (hwy 120).
Highly recommend for sunset, even though you'll have to hike back in the dark with a headlamp.

There is no easy hike to this point. I believe you have to backpack. The closed trailhead is about 6 to 8 miles. The view is awesome. Have not got to Half Dome yet so this place has been my best point in Yosemite.

We applied for the Half Dome lottery and didn’t win so we decided to hike the North Dome trail instead. Halfway through the hike, we decided we really did win the lottery! The views of Half Dome and along the way were stunning and well I’ll be honest, we realized we would have been way out of our league hiking Half Dome! We’re a fairly in shape family with 3 teenage sons and this hike kicked our butts! We felt it was a bit more strenuous than advertised but still well worth it. In some places it’s difficult to tell where the trail goes and fortunately we happened upon another hiker to help us out. The trial has some fairly flat parts but also lots of ups and downs and lots of exposed areas with full sun. Including Indian Rock Arch it was about 10 miles and it took us just under 6 hours. We started the hike at 7:30am and had no trouble parking at Porcupine Creek. At the end of the hike we saw some people just beginning this hike around noon which seemed way too hot.
