The glacier walk and ice cave your we did was fantastic! The ice caves are spectacular, and unlike anything I've ever seen. We ended up leaving as the sun was starting to set, which was a truly magical experience.

We drove to the car park where all tourists end up to switch over to the trucks that drive you to the glacier. We went with Glacier Mice. The tour guide was friendly, funny and had a lot of insightful knowledge he shared with us. The glacier tour is safe. The path and the caves have been pre-prepared, but it is very well done i.e. it still retains sufficiently its wild beauty. You will need sturdy and warm clothing and I would recommend for certain parts watertight boots. But overall, very accessible even for none winter- and wilderness-hardened tourist. The gave itself is stunning and beautiful. I would have loved to spend several more hours their and some portions of the path (there are different paths) are even adventurous. On the way back one of the tires had some issues. To be fair the ice path from and to the glacier isn’t a car friendly road. So that can happen. The tour guide was able to fix the tire himself i.e. lost some time but otherwise no harm.
It was an interesting tour and well organized. I can recommend to do this tour with Glacier Mice.
Glacier is a 9.5/10 and the tour company a 8/10 normalized to a 5 star on TP.

We were on a 2 day tour with Nice Travels which involved a visit to Jokursalon & Vatnajokul glacier Ice Caves. The Ice Cave tour was operated by Glacier Mice & I must acknowlege the name justifies the work all the Guides to there. They have literrally carved a safe route within the naturally formed ever changing Ice caves within this worl'd largest free standing glacier.
Our guide was Treeger & he was amazing. Very supportive, funny & insightful . he has himself been to all 14 glaciers in iceland & with his experience he has provided us with a ever lasting memory of ice cave with some very insightful knowledge of this phenomenal structues.
I highly recommend to visit & do the tour especially with Glacier Mice & Nice travels,

If you want to see a glacier, this is the place to be. It is the biggest in Europe, 1 km thick, covers 1/8 of the whole country and is located on top of a volcano. Be quick, as according to the forecast the glacier will be half as big in 100 years, and will disappear in 200 years.

Seeing glaciers was truly a life changing experience; not only are they truly breathtaking, you see them melting before your eyes! I couldn't take my eyes off the scenery; I just kept looking at what was in front of me and felt truly lucky to be alive and have the means to see this. It was the perfect thing to do in June 2022, when I was moving on from the pandemic. It was a real eat, pray, love experience, and I've been urging everyone to go ever since.
For this visit, definitely bring good gear; there are all kinds of vendors, and depending on what you do, they'll have heavy coats, life jackets, etc. However, they don't usually provide hiking boots; definitely invest in a good, waterproof pair.
I did do a zodiac tour of the lagoon, and some people got away with it in sneakers, so that's one way to get around that. However, I would recommend really engaging with this experience, if you can.

Stunning rapidly retreating glacier. You can enter the DJ ice cave, very fascinating to do at least once in your life

Part of our organized tour, we visited this national park . This glacier covers 14% of Iceland entire landmass . The series Games Of Thrones , some of it was filmed there, they used the background apparently. There are Ices caves , you can visit on a special tour. The waterfalls, volcanoes, mountains, glacier lagoon, + glacier rivers make this a memorable site , which in my opinion, should be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Recently came here to visit and see some of the glaciers. Very beautiful views, very nice experience!
There was a lot of cold wind, which is normal.

I am visiting in July. Does the visit to the ice cave (from Vik), include a glacier walk or is glacier walk and ice cave visit separate in summers?
Skrevet 4. mars 2019
Hello, I am visiting in early july and plan of seeing the ice cave in Vik. Is that different from a glacial walk?
Skrevet 3. mars 2019
The glacier walk we did was in the National Park. It was well worth the 2 hour drive from Vik!

Hi, I have a question from ones who went to the glacier with a tour. I have a a little problem in my leg, I can walk walk easily even in the snow , also in ice, did many hiking in North Norway. But slippery icy and steep is hard and dangerous for me. In slippery situation try to avoid steep, and find almost flat route. Do you think I can pick a tour and go to Vantajokull? Thanks.
Skrevet 22. august 2018
Hi! We went for a 2 hour tour of the ice cave suitable for beginners. it was slippery but not too long to walk to the caves. We went in March and the winds were extremely strong. This makes it even more slippery. They gave us Crampons and maybe with an ice stick you can hold yourself up, but I would recommend to call the tour companies directly and explain your problem. They seemed very professional and will be honest with you. Maybe offer extra help. If it is a dream of you to be on top of a glacier, I would recommend the experience.

How long does it take to get from Hoff to the actual glacier of Vatnajökull, like the one in the images in between the mountains and running into the river?
Skrevet 13. mai 2018
What is the minimum age for Vatnajokull? Can we have our 2 years old? Thanks!
Skrevet 22. februar 2018
Hello, we will be visiting Ice Land in July. Will the vatnajokull glacier be open to tourists in that time of the month??
Skrevet 10. januar 2018
Yes it's open all year round given that it is a glacier; the ice never disappears though it is retreating every year.
Skrevet 10. januar 2018
No that is not possible by yourselve. It is very dangerous to do so.crevases, dangerous roads and remote area without help if you have any problem.
Skrevet 4. januar 2017
Hi There! Thanks for your info. I was wondering if I really need a guide to go into the glacier and if it is possible to reach the parking area with a camper van..
I'd like to goby the end of may..
thank you!
Skrevet 11. oktober 2016
It is better to take a guide, glaciers are rather dangerous to walk on. Parking is indicated as private terrain. Parking area at Skaftafell visitor centre is reachable by camper. Guided tours start form there with special 4X4 bus.

Hello,
Can we visit Vatnajökull Glacier on our own or can we only go as part of a tour?
