Well presented farming museum in old Achen farmhouse giving an insight of how people used to live, work, hunt, fish, farm in the valley years ago. Good display of farming and forestry wooden tools as well as equipment used. The complete workshop of the last shoemaker in the valley is very well presented and interesting.
Information sheet in English is great. Enjoyed my visit here- always good to learn about the history of the place you are visiting

really well curated and fascinating Tyrollean farmhouse- you could have a very comfortable life here, though it's brought home to you where you are when you realise that the hens have to be brought in for the winter, and you have to be careful that the cheese doesn't freeze.

The Sixenhof is situated in a 14th cent farmhouse [partly rebuilt in 1810 after a fire] close to the northern shore of the Achensee. There are 21 rooms displaying life through the ages in the Achen Valley in Tyrol. More information is found in German at www.sixenhof.at. Entry costs €4. The museum was started in 1984.
The farmhouse normally had 25 cows plus some horses, pigs, sheep and hens, 11 ha of cultivated land, 54 ha of wood plus its own alm (Koegl) and this supported a family of 5-10 people.
Each room depicts some of the life of the farm life plus rooms devoted to the last shoemaker in Achenkirch , The barn above the cow stall all part of the northern end of the building had a wonderful collection of farming implements. The third floor of the farmhouse which is where the hay used to be stored had a display on the fauna and flora of the area, a display from the two fire brigades in Achenkirch, the steamships which plyed on the Achensee.
The 8 rooms on the ground floor consist of Stube(living room), Rauchkuchl (smoke kitchen), smithy, cow stall [toilets have been buiolt in the NW corner], cabbage room, dining room, dairy and workshop.
The 7 rooms on the 1st floor plus the barn are the main bedroom, the Kuchlkammer divided into 2 exhibition rooms, the shoe makers shop, Holzknechtkammer with displays of clothes and hunting, barn, store room with models of Sixenhof in 1950 and the former Grand Hotel Scholastika, Traodkammer with a diorama of flora and fauna, and the guest bedroom.
5 exhibition rooms on 3rd floor of fire brigade, fishing, shipping, geological profile and forestry
On the ground floor hallway there is a special exhibition on the 60th anniversary of the building of the Achenseestrasse which connects Achenkirch with the Inn valley of Tyrol. Previously the only connection had been by boat to Murach and then steam rack railway down to Jenbach and on to Innsbruck.
Was very impressed by some of the models especially that of the Grand Hotel Scholastica which used to be at the landing stage at Achenkirch and which burnt down in a disastrous fire just before the First World War. There is now a small hotel with the same name at the same location but only a small fraction of the original building.
