I have been dying to go see a submarine for ages and ages!
The staff here are all fantastic, the guide (Phil) was phenomenal and informative. It's a good hour to see this place (on a quiet day!) but we really liked it. Can't wait to come back and do the rest of the dockyard.
The stall for tea and coffee is also great, they provide a Waterbus for travelling between places also. Absolutely perfect day out!

Excellent place to visit with amazing tour guides! However pretty much no pushchairs are allowed on the boat to Portsmouth dockyard, which meant extra money for the ferry…bit of a joke!!

I'd never been on a submarine before and I had seen a TV documentary about Holland - so it was really good to see the Holland Submarine. The main attraction is being able to get into HMS Alliance - a WWII/Cold War submarine - and see just how packed and condensed everything was. Best bit was the two guides, both retired submariners, who were able to answer any question you threw at them! It is really great when you have such superb guides with first-hand knowledge. Thank you!!!

The HMS Alliance tour is the obvious highlight of the museum and is a fascinating and unique experience with highly knowledgeable guides available to answer questions. The attached museum was interesting and varied and I enjoyed seeing the midget submarine in there, and Holland 1 (the UK's first commissioned submarine) in its own separate building. Well worth a visit.

This experience was amazing and with the help of knowledgeable volunteers, (ex service personnel), you got a real flavour of life on a submarine. It was fascinating walking through HMS Alliance and hearing “dits” of life at sea. Definitely worth a visit

Great museum this and well worth going across the harbour for. The nuclear sub is an early one - for state of the aret you will have to go to Chatham dockyard or join the Navy. Other parts of the museum are excellent and very informative. Allow two hours to fully appreciate this.

Chose a day ticket as we were travelling only for the day from some distance away. Booked online and the link from the submarine page took me to the tickets and booked from there. Only gave me the option to book a slot for the dockyard, and it wasn’t until later that I saw that you have to scroll right the way down to the bottom of the page to book tickets and a slot for the gosport sites. Anyway called the day before leaving and was told to turn up at the dockyard for the time slot.
The submarine itself was impressive, well preserved and the museum was interesting. However we spent most of the day queuing, queue to get into the site. queue for the water bus, queue to get on the sub, queue for the coffee hut, queue for the water bus for the second time! That was a shame as we spent nearly two hours in queues for an attraction that took an hour to see. We felt rushed on the submarine as people behind us wanted to move on through. Because we only had a day ticket that was our visit- one queue session, we sadly didn’t see anything else. We were told we could go to the explosion museum with our ticket, either a 40 min walk away or you guessed it, another wait for the water bus and back and to be honest we couldn’t face it so went to the shopping mall instead! The day ticket is not worth the money in my opinion and you would be best buying an explorer ticket, in hindsight I wish we had, but as a single parent I was conscious of the price of that as I had already spent out over £60 for the 3 tickets.
On a positive note, the staff were friendly (and apologetic for the waits). The coffee in the hut was good, and there were plenty of facilities such as loos dotted around.

What's the best recommended route to get here from Portsmouth? car, train or ferry thanks!
VE_Team_PHD

Hi Claire,
The Gosport ferry is probably the easiest, it departs from Portsmouth Harbour train station and is about a 10 minute walk from the Submarine Museum on the Gosport side.
If you would rather drive round there is free parking available on site, and it is about a 45 minute drive from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
Best wishes,
