We have just come back from a weekend trip to north wales.
We went up there to visit the Welsh highland heritage railway for the Santa special.
It was absolutely amazing!
There was soo much activities for the children to do in the museum, and of course seeing Father Christmas 🎅.
The Father Christmas and elf were truly magical.
Our daughter absolutely loved it, so did we.
Well worth the long journey up.

Fantastic Afternoon Out. Ignore the reviews from the last two. They obviously didn't ask when they got there.
For a family ticket and unlimited rides, with a museum half way, volunteers that include the kids in everything they do, and are experts on the history of the highland railways in the area, it's truly fantastic. Highly recommend this attraction. Staff were brilliant.

When we were told it was a,short train journey they wasn't kidding its about 4 mins each way. The museum wasn't up to much either. Felt totally ripped off for £14 per adult. It really wasn't worth my hard earned cash.
My advice is save your cash & don't bother.

So disappointed with todays trip, short trip is an understatement about 5 mins total for round trip, the museum stop was explained to us as an interactive experience!! The only interactive part was holding the door open and standing next to each other to read information laminated leaflets. So no I would not recommend this trip, but do call in for a coffee as that was the best part.

Always a fantastic experience. Wonderful views of course, great engines and carriages and interesting friendly volunteers to talk to. I’ve done them all and will still be back for more.

I would highly recommended this railway, all staff are so friendly and approachable.
The museum is amazing and have so many interactive activities for children of all ages.
The children can get involved too? The miniature railway is also a great addition.
It is good value for money and you can travel all day.
The cafe is amazing too and serve excellent food.
The shop is soo well stacked.

My husband and grandson were very disappointed by this trip. They were only travelling for 20 mins in total. Nice scenery, but far too expensive for what it was. Lovely cafe, station and flowers though.

A very good day out for all ages. Initially I thought it was very expensive for what it was, the train journey isn't very long at all but this is made up with the offer of pay once and go on as many times as the day will allow. Plus on the way back you get time in the museum which was very interesting and the miniature railway was a great addition as well, just think the miniature railways needs a little bit of a tidy up. Volunteers very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and would definitely come back again. Was nice to see the available add on of Footplate Experiences and how they also run Driver Experience days too. The miniature railway carriages are a struggle to get in and out of, maybe just some open carriages that you sit on top of with feet on boards might be slightly more accessible to people, just a suggestion that might be worth considering

The volunteers are friendly, the railway is a short ride with a great Museum on local quarrying and the original Welsh Highland Railway. They have a Miniature train within the grounds and is very popular by the looks of it. I noticed they are wheel chair friendly and go out of their way to making children understand how railways work.

It might be the shortest heritage railway in the UK (or, Wales, at least) but it is not short on value. True, the actual train ride is short, but the Heritage Centre, that is visited on the return journey, is excellent. We understand why time is limited (children have a shorter attention span than we do, at least when our interest is aroused), but we needed to go back around a second time (the ticket covers as many journeys as you like on the day) to see the trains, carriages, etc and learn about the slate industry (which is better presented than at some slate specific attractions we have been to). Perhaps the greatest attribute is that our visit inspired us to find out more about something: in this case, one of the engines came from a site not far from us where there was a massive explosion in 1944. This visit delivered far more than we expected (neither of us would count ourselves as train enthusiasts as such). There is ult, and child, alike.

Hi, how big is the museum & is it more geared up for young families? We are thinking of coming for a visit (6 x adults & 1 well behaved dog). Thanks!
Skrevet 12. september 2022
There is the station café/gift shop at one end of the line and the actual museum + garden railway at the other. The museum is fairly big, about 1-2 football pitches in size. Everything is geared toward families with younger children, from the exhibits to the length of the line itself (0.75 miles, not long at all), especially compared to the other trains in Porthmadog.

Can you fit a double buggy on the train?
Skrevet 10. juni 2019
Are you open over the Easter weekend?
Skrevet 7. april 2019
Is the train disabled friendly. My wife has to travel by scooter (mid range) and cant handle climbing in and out of carriges.

We carry a wheel chair ramp and have a carriage with wide doors.
The crew will always be willing to assist.

Hi can you take a pram on board? Thinking about coming here with a 4 year old and a 8/10 week old (not born yet) in July. Thank you
Skrevet 21. april 2017
Hi, yes you can, we have a specially adapted carriage with double doors.
Looking forward to seeing you in July.

Just in case no-one else comments, Keith said "they might let you repeat the trip on the same ticket" - I suspect that was said a bit "tongue in cheek" as all tickets for the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway are valid all day, with the exception of some special events (like the Santa Specials and evening Halloween Trains). You can ride all day if you wish, some families do! (Jane Partridge, Shedmaster)

Where is the museum and miniature railway? What journey route is that? Its sounds a nice place to stop off.
Skrevet 10. august 2016
Visitors buy tickets and board the train at Porthmadog. The station is at the north end of town, across the High Street from the main line railway station, so it's a walk from the F&WHR station. WHHR trains run "out and back" excursions with a short stop at Gelert's Farm that gives you enough time to look around the museum.
