After myself, my wife, and our adopted little Hobbit - Mike - from the Auckland International Airport men's bathroom got done with Hobbiton and the Weta Workshop tour, we decided it would be good for his cultural education to see where Frodo threw the Ring into the fires of Mount Doom. It was very easily accessible and a nicely distanced hike - the fact that the volcano is now having a little nap after what happened when the Ring was destroyed is a big plus, as I wouldn't have wanted our Hobbit to have burned his feet on the way up. We found him wearing shoes but we've since confiscated them - this was a good thing because at first his feet weren't very tough and he complained a lot, but now its much better. He works better when we motivate him with sweets and minature cars for some reason. His nose has also become a bit beaky, which we attribute to the cold and because we've been training him for the altitude of the chimneys back home. Tongariro is beuatiful, much prefer the new name as "Mount Doom" was forboding and a bit of a mouthful. Lovely weather in the summer too! Would recommend for anyone who likes a good hike, but our Hobbit was complaining a lot at the end. A creche or parking area for Hobbits would be appreciated at the bottom of the mountain - we can provide a leash if needed.

Well I'm a young 63 Yr old man I did have a few thoughts about what if but hey I just went for it. Did it with my 28yr old daughter and her husband what a fantastic walk this is not easy in places but as others say its well sign posted that you can turn back now if finding it hard.
I can honestly say I had to stop and admire the views quite a few times if you know what I mean. Started of lovely sunny weather then went cloudy and cold at the top for a while so take heed wear the right clothes take plenty of snacks and water and enjoy it. It took us about 9 hrs and I loved every bit of it .

I did this walk with 7 other friends, we all started as a group of 8. It took us 7.5hrs and 9hrs, as we ended up in two separate groups. We assessed the weather at the beginning and then again at each 'milestone'. There are signs that tell you to turn back if the weather is not looking favourable. One of our group members turned around near the top of the devil's staircase, as she wasn't comfortable carrying on in low visibility and light rain. We made sure she carried on with a group and not alone. We continued to assess risks as we carried on walking. We had light to moderate rain, light to moderate winds and cold temperatures in parts, but we felt they were still within safety parameters (self-assessments). The weather didn't stay in one place, it constantly moved and changed. We also saw a guide and his group, which reassured that our assessments were okay.
The gear we each had; sandwiches, fruit, bars, lollies, 2L+ water, hiking boots/shoes, layered clothing, waterproof jackets, spare socks, gloves, hat, toilet paper, sunblock, lip balm, sanitiser.
Toilets are roughly every 1.5hrs and they are 'long drop' style.
Definitely do your research and be well prepared! Water, food and the right gear because mountain weather changes quickly.
What would I do differently? Have waterproof everything - shoes, pants, jacket, bag cover. Have some insoles for my shoes, as the last few hours I started to feel the ground a bit. Keep to time and a consistent pace. Pack food that is easy to eat and digest (almonds didn't work for me).
Other thoughts: I packed 3.5L water, which would have been fine in warm weather, but I used less than 2L.

A breath taking hike - for both the views the effort! This is not to be underrated as a stroll in the park. It’s a massive effort to literally climb a mountain range. Lots of people unprepared in board shorts and flip flops, when the weather can change in a heartbeat. Don’t be one of those people. If you’re considering it, do it, or you’ll go home with regrets!

A long and arduous hike, but well worth it for. the insane views and almost lunar landscape! They have a number of toilets along the trail. and it is well maintained. Bear in mind that it can get very busy and it is best to get there as early as possible!!

Bellissimo

Its a tough old walk, so be prepared. Weather can also change rapidly. Be sure to bring lunch, snacks, water, warm clothes (layers) and comfortable shoes.

I ended up doing the hike solo when my husband and hiking partner fell ill during our trip. I'm a 50-something woman in decent but not awesome shape, and I hike only a few times per year. I did train for several months ahead of this hike, and you do want to be in reasonably fit condition to do it. The trip to the summit has some rocky sections and some steps. Coming down, there's a tricky scree field; poles recommended. The long descent was perhaps the hardest part for me and my tired legs. But the views and challenge of it all made the effort well worth it.

what happen if you park more than 4 hour at mangatepopo car park where there is 4 hours parking restriction?

Much easier to book a shuttle, that way you have a ride back to hotel if you make the crossing or if you have to turn back.
Heard they were giving large fines so shuttle would be much cheaper.

In the next few weeks, my partner is going to hike the crossing and I am his drop-off and pick-up person. Can anyone give me ideas of what to do during the day while he is on the track, that is safe for me to do alone? Thank you so much in advance!

I'm planning on coming on 9/4 and just doing the Mangatepopo Valley to Soda Springs trail, would we need any snow gear? Also, would the roads up to the car park require snow chains during that time?
Would you recommend doing a shuttle service?

I cannot tell you about snow because we just visited New Zealand and don't know much about weather there. We visited the area in March this year and we booked the shuttle service from Taupo, Service was good and on time and I would do it again the same way.
Considering doing the hike around the 10th Jan 2020- has anyone done the hike in summer? How busy was it? I love hiking but dont want to do the walk if its too busy- would rather choose a quieter one.

Yes absolutely. Our gear folded into small packs. We had great weather so we ended up not needing some of layers. But from now on it will b a lot colder up there. lots of snacks and water too.

There is a start and a finish. You can walk for an hour and turn around but there is no separate track. Most shuttles, if you get one, will pick you up from the start if you cannot make the full journey so I imagine they would return and pick you up if you arranged it with them.

No, con defenderte un poco sirve. Puedes hacer la reserva de los buses por correo. Si te alojas en el car park cercano, ellos lo resuelven todo y hacen las reservas. Es cómodo.

Is there a 4 hour parking restriction at Ketetahi car park or just limited parking spaces? Confused by information I’m reading on websites
Also what time have people experienced the car park being full?
Many thanks

I do recall there being a restriction on parking at the walk start - you’re supposed to park at the other end (where you’ll finish) and take the taxi bus to the start.
