We had such a great time on the Old Coach Road today. Rental bikes are usually a bit old and worn out but not TCB's bikes - newish and beautifully maintained, the gear changes and brakes were sharp and precise. Tip: Pay the extra for the softtail bikes, the cobbles on the trail are sharp and bumpy! Everything was just smooth and easy. Old Coach Road is a must do on a bike or on foot, it's stunning.
Mya set us up nicely and answered all our many and varied and interminable questions with a smile. So much fun, thanks TCB.

Very intereati.g, somewhat challenging due to original cobblestones . Managaed up and back easily time wise.
A level 3 for sure.

My daughter and I did this together. Great service to get our bikes and drop off to the start point. Excellent directions and a really great experience!

This is a real bone-rattler of a ride and not what I expected at all. Apparently it's a grade 3 mountain bike track - whatever that means - and luckily I did no research beforehand as I probably wouldn't have gone otherwise.
I have no mountain bike experience, absolutely zero, and along with about half our group had to get off and walk about 50% of the time (which was fine).
There were some really lovely bits but a lot of it was VERY bumpy, large cobbled rocks, slippery downhill bits, strenuous uphill. The smooth parts came as a blessed relief.
Fitness-wise it's not difficult but the biking can be tricky, we walked up most of the uphill.
If you are not confident on a bike I would not recommend. If you are confident mountain biking you will love this.
Ladies, wear a decent sports bra.
Scenery is beautiful.
We went in a group of 12 with TCB. 6 adults, 6 kids ages 11-16. Some of the kids loved it, some hated it, depends on the kid. We had one fall with grazes - bring a first aid kit as TCB don't provide them.
TCB were great to deal with, easy to book and took us to the start at Horopito. Bikes were great, we had no dramas.
Glad I did it but would rather walk.

In all honesty it was great !!! Throughly enjoyed it albeit physically taxing (coming from a woman in her mid 50s who hasn’t done mtb ever before ).
If you want more details read on below ….
Just a brief note to the department of conservation - there seems to be some areas that they have forgotten to pave - significantly sized “cobblestones” to ride over, slushy areas where one could bog down…
Apparently this is “literally tech” according to my MTB afflicted 15yo son who could have done the course in 45mins if he wasn’t waiting for his parents and siblings.
Furthermore , we protest at the number of uphills - there are a couple - there is no indignancy in walking the bike up. The white wine at the end still tasted great whether one walked or rode up. My husband thought he was 18yo (late 50s) was hero riding and came to grief when one of the rocks came up and tried to bite him. The Apple Watch , turns out, has a falls assessment and offered to call emergency services . We declined - as only injury was to ego.
Would thoroughly suggest. Views are amazing (we had a sunny day). We hired bikes through TCB - very helpful and informative. They tricked us to the start of the ride and even took family (proof of life) photos !!!

The route was beautiful and the viaducts were special to see. No reason to travel specifically for this, but if you are in the area I would definitely grab this.
TCB's service in person. Jordana was fine.

The track was well marked. We loved the virgin bush, historic viaducts and tunnels and the adventure. Started from Ohakune with a coffee at the railway station. It had been raining over night but was not too slippery. We managed the mud but the cobblestones were real bone shakers so we shuttled back from Horopito with Max from Kuneshuttles. He only charged $15 pp and gave us a good commentary coming back to the motel. Smash Palace and the lovely Frankie at Jump Start were a welcome relief at the end. Berry Smoothie was delicious. Took 4 hours stopping to read all the history along the way. Track suited better for walking than e biking for us 68 year olds

We booked e bikes and shuttle through TCB in Ohakune. They have great bikes and instruction prior to starting the trip. The shuttle dropped us off at the top of the trail.
Beautiful trail, scenic bush and via ducts.
Was the highlight of our trip to Ohakune.
Thanks T.C.B for your support and professionalism

Very expensive for what it is.
Would 100% not recommend with young kids who aren’t big on biking far. Wasn’t to bad for us adults as we paid the extra for an e bike, otherwise would have been a real struggle on just a regular bike.
Views were lovely but by the time we were half way through we just wanted to finish as my daughter was really upset.

I'm looking to book the old coach road self guided tour. Are e-bikes available and if so how do I book? I only see one option on TripAdvisor. Date is 29 July, 3 people.

There are no entrance fees to any rides or walks.

We are considering doing this ride in May with our 5 year old. He can ride a bike without training wheels. Do you think it is achievable or would we be better off waiting a couple of years to do the ride with him? Thank you in advance for your responses.

The youngest riders we have had through the trail is 5 years old, If they are a competent rider then you can make it through no worries. Just allow for a lot of stop offs and pack lots of snacks as it normally takes little legs between 3-4 hours.
Another options is a clip on bike that You can rent from us at TCB in Ohakune.

how far (km) is it from the Marshall road car park to the Hapuawhenua viaduct? I am thinking of taking kids...
Skrevet 27. desember 2017
Around three km from the car park to the Viaduct each way.

Yes you can ride this trail all season, the track is well made and has good drainage. if you are riding in the winter make sure you have the appropriate clothing and some good tread on your tyres. Jackets, tyres and winter clothing is available for purchase or rental from TCB in Ohakune.
