Highly recommended. Everything went well and was explained very clearly. The shuttle was on time at the agreed time and the driver was very friendly.

Dream destination in New Zealand
We parked the car in Ketehati and were picked up on time, reliably and super friendly by the Tongariro Expeditions shuttle and driven to the starting point. We received some more information on the way. The trip was relaxing and fun!

The pros of this company are that they were the only one we could find that offered a shuttle from Taupo, they do pick up from your accommodation, and they give you a briefing about the trail and a map to help you on your way.
They are quite an expensive option given that if you arrive at the end of the trail after their pickup time, their advice is to hitchhike back to Taupo. I understand why they have to have a cut off time to leave, but they also only give you 7 hours so bear that in mind if you want to take your time.

We are glad our service worked for you.
Part of our fee goes to DOC for the running of the track. This is a new increase in costs.
The track takes 6-8 hours. We drop you at the start of the track at 7am and we pick up between 2-3pm in the afternoon. This gives you 7-8 hours to do the track.
The service we provide is that time table. If you do miss the final bus in the afternoon you can either ask someone friendly for a ride back or call a taxi. This is an expensive option but good to know you can.
If you are concerned about not being fast enough hiker the Ketetahi one way shuttle may be a better option for you. You need a car for that option.

We recently completed the fantastic Tongariro Alpine Crossing and after searching for the right option as to where we will park etc we chose to use Tongariro Expeditions ‘Ketetahi Park N' Ride (One Way Morning Shuttle)’. Easy-peasy! We booked in online for the 07:30 shuttle, instantly received a confirmation email confirming pickup location and details. What we really liked was the email just the day before titled ‘All go!’ Advising on the weather expected for the walk, and further info and advice on what to take. We parked up on the morning and our friendly shuttle driver Greg soon arrived, on the shuttle he gave some advice, and maps whilst waiting for any stragglers and had a few jokes which was a nice way to start the day. 8 hours later, we returned to our motorhome. We were a little dubious leaving our motorhome at the pick-up location, but it was absolutely fine, and if you’re really worried you can pay to go in private carpark (space depending) very close to the pickup location. This is through a different company though! We will use Tongariro Expedition’s again in the future and recommend them! Thanks to Mandy for answering all of our questions.

Thank you. The public parking area along the side of SH46 has been used for years and years as an overflow area when the Ketetahi car park would fill up. Now that the Ketetahi car park has a 4 hour time limit, people park on SH46 for free, safe public parking all day. We are glad you had a great experience.

I booked in for a one way shuttle to the start of the track, leaving my car at Ketetahi Carpark ready for when I finished. I’ve completed this twice before and know the track well, comfortable that I have the physical capabilities to complete it.
I made my way up the track and got to the bottom of the Red Crater where it was very low visibility. I talked with some others who were unsure about going up. I decided for myself that it was my time to turn around and go back - as has been recommended. Tongariro Expeditions handed out a ‘map’ at the start with a number to text if you need a lift from the start to your car in case you turn around.
I texted this number and the reply I got was that when I get to the carpark I should hitch a ride with someone to my car - absolutely disgusting. I’m a solo female walker. This is unsafe advice given what happens to many females in this country. I asked what the cost would be to get a ride and was told it would be $100 and someone would have to be organised as no one was around. It sounded like a big inconvenience to them. I asked for this option because I didn’t have any other options and didn’t feel safe to continue the hike. After talking with my partner who was over 3 hours away, he offered to pick me up (7 hours in total return trip) because he wanted me to get home safely. When I text the number back to say I’d organised a ride, I got back “See easy 👍🏼”
I’ve never been so appalled in all my life at ‘customer service’. I will NEVER be booking this company again and will not be recommending them to anyone, instead steering people well clear.

Thank you for your feedback. I have spoken to the Emergency Mobile person and he showed me your correspondence.
Perhaps the wording was not clear enough. However, I do see from his communications that he did offer you two options:
a) find a ride for free (many people choose this option)
b) if you do not find (or in your case, do not want to find) another ride then he did say we could arrange a driver and bus to meet you there for a charge of $100
We always offer these two options as most people do not want to pay for another service to get them back to their car. Most people just say to us that they have found a ride with another hiker. In fact, some even get us to come to pick them up and they are no longer there because they got a 'free ride' and didn't bother to tell us. Our Emergency Mobile person is so used to people preferring this option that he did make it sound like that was the 'best' option. Which is not the case for ALL people. We will be creating a text that more clearly sets out the options so that this offense does not occur again.
I am a female and I too would not choose to jump in someone's car. However, many people do prefer that and appreciate being told about this FREE option.
I did read in your texts that he said that 'if this fails we can see what alternative arrangements we can make' and then said he will 'need to check where a driver and bus is first' he did say 'this will take some time to arrange as drivers and buses are not in the area'. This is true but you didn't need to hear all of that. What you needed to hear was a very clear time and cost of a pick up. I have given him this feedback. So in the future he will have a text that includes two very clear options including time and cost of pick up if that is what they choose.
You then said you would prefer the pick-up and he asked you to contact him when you got to the end of the track. You said 'thanks'
He said to me at this point he called around to find out who is available and at what time. So he did have someone ready if you needed it. But then you messaged back that you had 'organised a ride. Thanks anyway.'
He assumed you meant that you found a ride at the end of the track. He had no idea that you were upset and no idea that you were being picked up by your husband who was hours away.
His final comment of 'See easy (thumbs up)' was because he thought you were like many other people who choose to chat to someone on the track with you and catch a ride with them. He was just commenting that this is often the easiest thing to do. No waiting and no cost. He did not mean to offend you.
I am so sorry if this interaction upset you. It was not his intention. But he has learned a lot about clear communication as a result and will approach these situations differently in the future.
We are glad that you arrived home safe. Please know that had arranged a pick up for you but then cancelled it when he got your text. I just think things were lost in the communications. We have not had a complaint of this nature before. This helps us all to learn and grow.

Good shuttle option from Taupo - they kept us well informed about the weather conditions and if the tour would be able to go ahead. The map and advice given was really useful and informative and you felt like you could ask them any questions re. the crossing. The pickup shuttle turned up a bit later than they said they would which left us a bit concerned at the end as we had no phone signal to phone them. The coach was very hot on the way back. Otherwise really good company and friendly staff.

Thank you for your well thought out feedback. There is one of our buses that is getting the air conditioner fixed shortly. Sorry for this inconvenience.
I'm glad the rest of our services worked for you. There are roading delays on the main SH1 between Taupo to the mountain at the moment. This may have resulted in a delay at arriving in the afternoon.
Phone coverage is patchy in the Ketetahi car park. But rest assured we always come to pick you up in the afternoon.

They said to take only a few brakes, on the shuttle over to the crossing, so we did. About an hour in total on the crossing. Then we had to wait 2,5 hours for the shuttle. They could have sent one or two of the shuttles since they had three that day. Everybody on those three shuttles waited an average of 1,5 hours at the end of the crossing that’s not optimized in my opinion.

Our map shows how long it takes to do each stretch of the track so that you meet the bus at the correct time. When they advise not to take long breaks, that is because if you sit down and relax for too long your body can seize up and the final part of the track can be made more difficult for you.
If we have three buses there, we do fill one and it leaves as they fill. We would not wait for an hour and a half if the people were there and the buses were full. Remember other people at the end of the track may not be with us.
If those 3 buses are full in the morning, one bus cannot leave early, it must wait till it is full.
I hope this helps you to understand we would never make you wait if it was in our power to leave.
Also, if you are a fast hiker we do advise doing the Ketetahi one way shuttle. No need to wait for or rush for a bus for that option.

Professionals. They know the place and are very good to prepare the visitors. Because of crazy weather they changed our trip, so that we started from behind and returned when we came to the blue lake. Nice job of them!

We pick up from Taupo, Turangi, Base Camp or Ketetahi. We pick you up from your accommodation in Taupo or Turangi if it is central. We pick up from our secure car park at Base Camp right next to the Tongariro Holiday Park. Or we can do a one way shuttle from Ketetahi to Mangatepopo in the morning.
