It 'was a nice discovery visiting the Amalfi coast: a boat ride in this cave with beautiful reflections of the sea considering the natural lighting of the cave. Ticket price 10 euros.

It seemed that almost as soon as we docked at Amalfi and disembarked from the ferry we were back on another one. This smaller tour boat began heading west back along the coast toward Positano where we just had come from. It was a chartered tour boat with a couple of dozen passengers all heading to the Grotto dello Smeraldo, the Green Grotto.
After a fairly short trip we entered the bay of Conca dei Marini, overlooked by an old square shaped watchtower built by the Spanish on a prominent point of land. Our tour boat pulls up along side another on a stone jetty at the base of a cliff and we all disembarked.
We’re told we can leave backpacks and other bags aboard and after pulling out my DSLR leave mine with a bottle of water and a fresh t shirt. I do notice our guide from Alilauro Gru.So.N moves mine and my wife’s bag under the bench near him so he can keep an eye on them.
A short walk along the jetty takes us to an narrow entrance in the cliff face. We all enter and are inside an immense cavern. Waiting our turn we line up and climb aboard small row boats. Once filled the row boat
Each rowboat carried about a dozen passengers and a single boatman who acted as a guide. For some strange reason the two of us ended up in a boat full of Italian tourists and our guide spoke almost no English a fact he apologized for.
Ironically as he rowed us about the grotto passing information in Italian and then trying to again in English, I could hear snatches of conversations from other boats, including English. There were about three boats making a circuit of the grotto and apparently with the exception of ours they were all filled with visitors based on a single language.
Lack of language though was not a major concern. This is the sort of place where you really don’t need to hear about it, just look and take in the natural beauty. In total the slow boat ride around the grotto takes less than a half an hour. Aside from the water and its unique colour there are numerous stalactites and stalagmites to view.
The Green Grotto is an underwater fissure that sunlight filters through. It is believed the cave was formed by tectonic upheaval and then later descended and allowed seawater to enter through an underwater outlet. The grotto derives its name from the colour of the water takes, a deep emerald, that comes from refracted sunlight through this entrance.
There is no natural outlet above the waterline unlike that at the Blue Grotta in Capri.
The present size of the grotto is approximately 45 metres by 32 metres with an estimated 24 metres in height above the water level.
The absence of any visible opening meant that the grotto’s existence went unknown for centuries if not longer. It was discovered by a local fisherman in 1932.
Once the tour was completed, we were rowed back to the dock and exited through another narrow opening onto the stone jetty to board the boat back to Amalfi.

Bad experience. They charge you €45. Those who operate the mount boats even extend a hand to get into a boat that moves from one side to the other. My chest was hurt. I couldn't breathe. I paid to get ill-treated and they hurt me badly.

It is reached by sea from Amalfi in a few minutes, while enjoying spectacular views of the coast from the sea, from Amalfi to Conca dei Marini and the grotto.
The boat trip ticket includes entrance to the grotto by jumping the queue. It is visited in small groups by boat. The Guide Rower explains the pecularities of the grotto, the color of the water, the configurations of stalactites and stalagmites, the ceramic nativity scene located at the bottom. Just as spectacular is the skill of the seafarers who operate these boats, bring them closer to shore, and help travelers get in/out of the boat or even get off a boat in between. It is extremely entertaining to observe the skill with which they manage the boats. It is worth noting the professionalism with which they take care of travelers and inform them of what they see. A couple of refreshing (take us the first of the morning) and entertaining hours, which leave beautiful images in the memory.

It is an interesting cave with natural light at some points. When you enter, you board on a little boat and the guide drives you around explaining some things (he was quite funny) for about 20 minutes. It was definitely worth visiting. However, I think that it was quite pricey for what it actually offered.

A real tourist trap. We are talking about a cute cave, like many others, and extremely small in size. If the price was 2€ per person I would have nothing to object but 10€ ad personam to see a simple cave with the reflection of light on the water is a theft

If you are on the Amalfi coast this wonderful cave must be seen. A unique cave, with stalactites and stalagmites that rule over a body of water with unique colors. I recommend going there by boat so you can admire the Amalfi coast seen from the sea. Unique show. Highly recommended...

Magical place, silence and calm. Even the person who rowed the boat for us was calm and nice. Stunning colors, given by nature.

Excursion to the Fantastic Cave.
Pleasant Amalfi/Conca dei Marino crossing, we were lucky enough to sail alone there and back.😍
Once we arrived in the Cave, the Sailor Roberto welcomed us into his raft, giving that extra touch to the beauty of the Cave.
To visit ....
especially with Roberto 😆🤣
The Grotto is like a natural swimming pool, beautiful and romantic.

If you arrive by land, there is somewhere to park. The boat ride leaves every 30 minutes and there is an elevator. (no stairs) We didn't do it as it would take a while until our turn. But the infrastructure is good and the landscape is beautiful.

noi andremo in aprile
grazie
Skrevet 10. februar 2019
Come funziona? E come ci si arriva da Amalfi? Non abbiamo la macchina. Grazie
Skrevet 5. september 2018

Is it easy to get a tour when we get there or is it better to book in advance? Do they have private tours?
Skrevet 14. april 2017
It's a small grotto, but you will definitely want a guide to take you there. The hotels will be happy to help you find a guide. We found ours on the internet. You don't want to drive the Amalfi coast and its towns on your own.

Prezzo 3€ parcheggio.
