A beautiful surprise. It is worth staying for at least a week to explore the surroundings of Lake Garda and, who knows, the nearby villages and towns of Verona, Trento, Mantua, Sirmione and Rivoli. And, of course, the Venetian legacy...

For Italian citizens, until a few years ago, Peschiera was above all a reminder of the role it had played in the Italian Wars of Independence (1848; 1859; 1866). At that time, in fact, Peschiera, together with the very well-known cities of Verona and Mantua, and the much less known city of Legnago, constituted one of the vertices of the so-called “quadrilateral”. That is, a quadrilateral of fortifications built by impressive works over decades by the governor Field Marshal Radetzky, to block any invasions of the Lombard-Venetian Kingdom, assigned to the Austrian Empire from the Congress of Vienna onwards (1815).
In reality, in the case of Peschiera and Legnago, Radetzky limited himself to strengthening the fortifications created by the Republic of Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries.
But while the fortifications of Legnago have been almost completely destroyed since the 1880s, those of Peschiera have been well preserved (except for a section corresponding more or less to the current ferry port). So in 2017 they showed the requirements to become part of a new group: that of the UNESCO World Heritage of Venetian fortifications in the early modern age, both inland and on sea.
The six fortifications identified as well preserved are on an international scale: Bergamo, Peschiera, Palmanova (Italy), Zadar, Sibenik (Croatia), Kotor (Montenegro).
This recognition has brought attention to the value of the fortifications of Peschiera, and therefore - as almost always happens with UNESCO brands - has greatly increased the collective appreciation of the entire town.
The process was also facilitated by the liberation of the wall complex from residual former functions; for example that of the military prison (closed in 2001). And the complex is now accessible in all its exteriors and in some interiors.
We found the audio guide provided free of charge (but against a deposit) by the local Tourist Office to be particularly effective in illustrating the attraction. This audio guide (accompanied by a paper map) allows you to gain in-depth knowledge, guiding you on your journey through the different parts of the fortified city.
The audio guide also provides information on the sights that can be observed via a boat tour. But this tour must be paid for separately, starting from the "Canale di Mezzo" of the town.

Interesting city walls/fortress with nice downtown, many small shops and restaurants, all but not quite cheap. The canals are beautiful around the city wall/fortress wall and you can also walk on the walls and get a panoramic view. We were there for the second time after last year, especially in not so great weather a destination or stop on the way to e.g. Salo.

Cozy happening in Peschiera del Garda. Unfortunately it was very hot around 11-21 Aug 37 degrees feeling temperature 40-45 degrees. We had brought the bikes but not touched them, too hot. We stayed 10 min drive from Peschiera in Hotel Nuova Barcaccia and thought to hop back and forth by bike, not to do we found.

A beautiful town closed between ramparts and waterway in perfect condition.
The stretch of the Middle Canal between the renovated Officers Pavilion and beautiful houses is breathtaking.
Of course, like many places on Lake Garda, it suffers a crazy tourist crowd in spring and summer and this is a bit of a problem (in addition to the heat, which on Lake Garda is worse than Tunis!).
Better go out of season.

The fortress of Peschiera del Garda is an imposing defensive work that for centuries protected the town. Inside the fortress, over the years, numerous military buildings were built, enclosed by powerful brick walls. Along the boundary were also opened two gates, Porta Verona and Porta Brescia, in the direction of the roads leading to the two important cities.

Peschiera is really a little jewel of Lake Garda that deserves to be visited. Well maintained and preserved town. From here also starts the cycle path that runs along the Mincio and arrives in Mantua. To see.

Peschiera is really beautiful, a little pearl on Lake Garda and worth a visit when you are in the area. Nice bridges, nice clubs, a nice center and a nice walk in the area.

There are about 15 things to see in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It would have been worth doing a tour to get more history. Even so, just walking around it was pretty cool and worth the hour we spent.

Ciao!
