This is a large site with monuments spread out across it, the museum is in the nearby town. Like Rorke's Drift I was pleased to see a monument to the fallen Zulu whose bravery was amazing to run into rifle fire with no defence. I had the place to myself as I was on a self drive tour, the site is very quiet and adds to the emotional impact of the site.

We stopped at the museum first. It’s not on the battlefield. It is a couple miles away in the town of Isandlwana. It had some excellent exhibits and lots of text. For a few cents you can buy a self-guided tour booklet here if you are doing this on your own but I would recommend having a guide if you can.
Our guide then drove us to the battlefield and went into more detail about the battle. It was fascinating listing to him as you were standing on the battlefield. It was several months after the battle before British forces came back to it. The British dead had been left on the field. Over the months they had been eaten and only bones remained. The bones were gathered up into piles. Rocks were stacked on top of them. Our guide said that his great-grandfather was in the British army and helped to do this. These rocks were painted white. These piles are called cairns. The landscape is dotted with them. There are several monuments on the field dedicated to individuals and units.

We visited the battlefield on a tour from Fugitives Drift Lodge where we were staying. The late owner of the lodge had pre-recorded some CD's which took you through the story and when combined with the driver/guide this provided a layered experience of what could have been quite boring. My husband loves battlefield history, but even I really enjoyed the experience and left feeling as if I really understood what happened there.

Well, what an incredible true story, an event that shook an empire, so peaceful now with such endearing scenery, but to get the very best information then take a guided tour.
Paul Lamberth, our guide for the day and also our host at his family farm, Rorke's Drift Lodge, had such a composed manner to deliver to us the truth of this historical defeat of the British at the hands of the Zulu nation.
Fabulous narration from a man who knows this land, the reasons why, how, and what created this major massacre at Isandlwana.
Humbling visit, the battlefield shows the scars of the British fallen, the white painted stones acting as the graves for many...
An amazing place to visit but talking a tour is a must and Paul provided a detailed and very interesting historic adaptation, simply the truth!

Waited over 50 years to walk this famous battlefield from the Anglo Zulu War of 1879. The trip was a great success and the experience took my breath away, especially when walking the Fugitives Trail.

We had an excellent local guide who spent an hour giving us a very detailed history of the site. Very moving, and in a really beautiful spot. It is very open so take water, sun cream and a hat.

Sobering site. The museum has a nice display. There is a small restaurant and refreshments and gifts are available. Clean toilets. The battle ground is tourable with a self-guide booklet, available from the museum.

We had the delight of visiting with one of the fabulous guides from Fugitives’ Drifts and he shared the tale with aplomb. He made us feel as if we were there and cannot helped but be moved or tears by the battle stories.

With our Explore Worldwide group of 12 standing around the edge of the "bowl" of the battlefield and the top of the circular bowl above us by maybe a 100 feet our guide whose name I cannot remember struck his cowhide shield which was taller than he was -with his knobkerrie - and the resounding noise echoed all around us which brought goose bumps to many of us. He said to try and imagine that sound multiplied by several thousand Zulu warriors all striking their shields simultaneously and consider the depth of fear that it put into the hearts of the British contingent !
Unfortunately my pictures from this part of the trip seem to have disappeared - I thought I had transferred them all to disc - but I can still feel my spine tingling with the memory !! If I find them I will post them later.

Visiting from cruise ship this year, Which tour companies take afternoon tours of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift?
Skrevet 14. januar 2018
Hubby and I left our hotel in Durban at 7AM (with to-go breakfast on hand) to travel by land to reach Isandlwana. We got there close to mid-day and by the time we return to our hotel in Durban, that's with only 1 stop for bathroom break, it was already dark. You might want to communicate with the Tour services available how you can make your afternoon tour possible.

We are a family of 4 (3 boys 10 and 14). We will be travelling from Swaziland and then onto Durban. We would like to stay 2 nights.
Could you recommend what to do and where to stay?
Thanks

Rorkes Drift was very disappointing. Obviously none of the buildings are original but they didn't even rebuild them on the same plot, and the landscape has been changed to accommodate tourists. Isandlwana however was truely magnificent. To walk up to the cave and see the bullet holes in the walls was thought provoking. A guide is definitely needed to bring it all to life... And a visit to Isandlwana Lodge (from where the Zulus directed the battle) will be an added bonus to your trip. However, as both battlefields are close, you can do both in one day as there is point in travelling so far without visiting both ( which you would later regret). We regret not taking time to visit Spienkop!
