Nanstein castle was erected around 1162 by order of emperor Frederic Barbarossa.

In 1518 the stronghold was acquired and adapted to firearms by Franz von Sickingen. In 1523 the new defences were put to the test by the largest artillery deployment to date. After a short siege the walls were breached and the landlord was mortally wounded by falling rubble.

From 1543 onward the offspring of Frans von Sickingen transformed Nanstein castle into a luxurious renaissance palace. The edifice sustained severe damage from several war events in the second half of the seventeenth century.

Visitors can discover Nanstein castle with the help of an audioguide (english version available) and an excellent reconstruction film. There are neither information panels nor a brochure.

The layout of the medieval stronghold remains obscure. None of the buildings atop castle rock have been preserved.

The massive artillery tower, the courtyard of the renaissance palace and its gun terrace and star shaped bastion can still be identified. Part of the defences facing the town of Landstuhl have disappeared and the entrance facade has been gutted beyond recognition. No living quarters have been preserved.

In conclusion :

Sadly Nanstein castle fell short of our expectations. Worth a short stop if you are in the area but nothing to go out of your way for.

Hint for the management :

Place information panels with reconstruction drawings to improve the orientation of visitors.

Beautiful hike up the mountain side. Great place to see the town overhead. Recently they had a landslide so they closed the restaurant by the castle which is depressing because they had some very good schnitzel and beer. The castle should be open all day everyday but that my opinion.

Tolle Aussicht.

My first walk up the hill to the castle wearing jeans in August was a bit warm, to put it mildly. On subsequent trips I wore shorts and had a much time.

The castle grounds provides an excellent view of the city below and there is a small cafe where you can buy lunch and refreshments with outdoor seating.

There is a small entrance fee to enter the castle proper, about $4.00 US.

Once inside you are free to explore from top to bottom. The castle is centuries old and it obvious it has been under reconstruction various times during it's history.

Adults are likely to appreciate the beautiful views and historical information, while children will certainly enjoy exploring all of the nooks and crannies.

Cost 2€ for entrance, the views are great! It’s a good place to bring family members visiting in the KMCC area. For Castle ruins, it’s still interesting to see how it would’ve looked back then versus how it looks now. They also have a restaurant located next to the castle and lots of hiking paths around.

This is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the Ramstein area for any length of time. For three Euro with a military discount, you can see some old ruins, a great video explaing what it looked like some four hundred years ago, and some outstanding views of Landstuhl, Ramstein, and the air base. I had a nice sunny day. My only complaint was that they ran out of English guidebooks. I asked at the counter, but the man there said there were no more. I asked for Spanish, but they had none. They did have French, but that was it. So, while I really enjoyed the castle, the video presentation, and the sights, I feel as though I missed out on a lot of the history if the Sickenburg family. However, I will likely be back to see it again. The entire castle takes 90 minutes maximum. I am going to return there to eat at the restaurant adjacent to the castle as it is within walking distance to the Schloss Hotel, where I am staying.

If in the area, Burg Nanstein is worth the visit. It is a lovely walk to get there (of course you can also visit by car...) , the ruins of the castle are quite impressive, but most of all I believe it is the view that rewards the potential visitor. Also we ended up having a coffee at the Cafe-Restaurant situated there, which was also fine.

The road to get up to the castle is very narrow and you may have to pull over to the side of the road to let the traffic in the opposite way go, before you can continue. Parking is free and the entrance fee is 3 Euros per person. The castle has many entry ways to different areas. Lots of stairs and uneven ground. It has many parts where you can see the city. It closes at 3pm so the last tickets sell at 2:30. We arrived around 1:30. It took us about an hour to walk around taking our time. You can probably do it in half the time. They do have free bathrooms to use. There’s a restaurant at the entrance but it closes early.
