We were told to visit by a guide at an ancient village and he was right. The walk through this tightly grown wood/undergrowth was delightful as the messages left at the well were poignant .Then on to the ruins of the lovely little chapel. Step back in time.

The title of this review is a quotation. We were making our way through the gnarled, lichen-draped tunnel of hawthorn that leads from Madron to the Holy Well and Celtic Chapel when a figure appeared, coming from the opposite direction. He smiled broadly and said 'Voyagers in the underworld', which seemed an appropriate statement, given the otherworldly atmosphere of the ancient track.
This atmosphere is increased when you reach the side-turning to the holy well, to find the twisted branches festooned with multi-coloured cloths. The idea, I'm told, is that those with pain or ailments tear a piece of cloth from the corresponding part of their clothing and tie them to the 'clouty tree'. When the cloth rots and falls, the ailment will be healed.
We had my elderly mother with us, so did not walk down the swampy path that led to the well proper.
Further along the path is a ruined celtic chapel of uncertain vintage. Its lower parts, up to about 4 foot from the ground, are intact and include a font and an altar. Again, the feeling of age and seclusion is palpable.
A modest attraction but one that makes a large impression.

The walk in is lovely. We did not get to the well as too muddy with so much rain recently, but I will be back to do in.

If you're a fan of walking off the beaten track, looking for hidden treasures and enjoying the tranquil peace and quiet this is the ideal place for you.

The chapel and well as not visible from the road, but you'll be thankful for this once you find them! When we visited they were all overgrown, but this only added to the experience.

Decided to find Madron Well. We parked cars at the church and walked up through the village towards the Carn and onto Madron Wishing Well.
Our walk took in buzzards and kites arobatic displays and then we reached the path to St Madron Well. A squelchy, muddy, dirty path took as to the well. Due to the rain the well was flooded. So we back tracked to the wishing tree and well. Quite a spiritual place. Onto the small St Madron chapel.
Good muddy walk enjoyed by us all regardless of how mucky we all were

A pleasant and short circular walk from Madron village.

Park in village and follow main road north to last houses. A stone stile on right leads to a footpath across three fields, last bit enclosed. Comes out on lane, turn right and you'll come across start of path to well and chapel.

Following path through woods, there is a boggy stream on left with pallet "stepping stones" and a very muddy track. I suspect this leads to the well proper, but looks like a job for wellies. The main (dry) path passes a clouty grove and ends up at an atmospheric chapel in its own little enclosure. Continuing on, the path takes you down a strange avenue of close-set trees with views of valley to left, then footpath across a couple of fields, down lane and you're back in Madron.

Have been visiting the 'Well' and the Chapel for at least 20 years, it is still a beautiful and tranquil location, still get a nice 'buzz' from being here. Often meet lovely, like minded people and have introduced lots of people to the location, all seem to love it and return of the own accord.

But this time would like to raise a couple of concerns. The first you now need to keep your eyes on the path, every step of the way, as there is a pile of dog mess every 5 meters or so, in addition trees are now 'decorated' with bags of dogs mess, not a good look. Not sure if visitors or maybe even local residents. Whoever is responsible, their behaviour is really starting to take the edge off of this magical site.

Can I also make a plea, with all of the justifiable concerns being raised about plastics in the environment, could those that hang things in the trees have a little think about the impact on the environment after you have walked away. Maybe go for natural fabrics and things that will break down harmlessly not loads of plastics and synthetics. We always take natural things that will breakdown, compost and leave no trace apart from in our memories of this special place.

It is not a nag or whinge, but can we just think about the people that will follow along after our visits and give a little thought to the Cornish environment. Thank you.

We stumbled across this by accident. It is a charming and magical find and is well worth a visit. Loved the fact that we were the only people there too!

I knew nothing about this well, but having missed the turnoff to Trengwainton Estate, I came across the sign to it, and thought, "Why not?" A short ways along the path was a tiny sign saying the well. I continued on about 10 or 15 minutes, but having come across nothing, I thought maybe I hadn't looked closely enough around the sign so turned back, and thus missed it all - so apparently I should have kept on. On the other hand, I did chance upon St. Madern's Church in Madron on the way back when the vicar was there and he treated me to a wonderful tour of one of the most lovely and interesting churches I saw in Cornwall. (Also informed me that Trengwainton was closed Saturdays, so had to return for that.)
