Found this by visiting Helmsley for the castle and what a treat it was. The garden is interesting and colourful from the formal borders to the more wild areas and the vegetable/fruit garden. Well done to everyone involved especially the volunteer gardeners!

This is a very large walled garden with a great display of a wide variety of plants, some of which you can buy.
There is a good cafe there that sells very reasonably priced meals that are based on salads and open sandwiches. The quantity of food is large with each portion! Some people may struggle to eat their portion…
A really interesting place to visit if you enjoy gardens, plants and peace and quiet

Maintained largely by volunteers and young adult trainees the gardens are an ever-changing scene throughout the year. This 5 acre garden was created in the mid-1700s and brought back from a derelict state a decade ago. Be sure to visit on your next trip through Helmsley and to lunch at the Vine Restaurant.

Interesting to view a well kept garden. Sadly its too expensive for the experience.

There is a cafe which is expensive, but probably down to the venue.

Nice but maybe a bit expensive?

I’ve visited before at different times of the year so likely not the best time (missed tree blossom and spring flowers and before summer colour)

Watch for strange pricing as they seem to automatically include gift aid as an additional charge apparently it’s to do with local residents getting free entry so the charity gift aid aspect is affected).

I only say a bit expensive I’m view of other walled gardens that are on a larger scale but if you are in the area and want to visit a tranquil garden then it’s worth it.

Hi Jad, Thanks for reviewing us and for giving us your honest opinion. Yes the spring blossom was fabulous but it sounds as if you also missed the Laburnum Arch and the iris Border so real bad luck. I hope you will come again, maybe first or second week in June as both of those have been magnificent. I'm slightly confused about the Gift Aid issue you experienced. We don't automatically include it, either online or at the Kiosk. Each visitor has to agree to Gift Aid their entry fee and fill in a short form saying they agree. Gift Aid for visitors has no relation to our Residents Pass which is for people who live within a six mile radius of the garden. Regarding the cost, we look very carefully at the entrance costs of other garden attractions, bearing in mind their size and what they offer. We want people to visit as - a small independent charity - we rely on the income from visitors in order to develop and maintain the garden and provide the opportunities for therapeutic horticulture that is part of our charitable objectives. I hope this has explained and answered your queries and hope you will come back and enjoy this tranquil garden again. Until then, All best wishes, Tricia Harris, marketing and communications manager

Visited the gardens whist on a walk around the village. The staff / volunteers greeted us and were really friendly. It’s a lovely atmosphere helped by nice weather on our visit. There is a lovely cafe, small garden shop and plants for sale. Although I was under strict instructions not to buy as we had a 4 hour journey home. Would love to see the gardens in the summer and must admit I had cold frame envy. Only recommendation would be for them to add more labels to the established plants, that state the actual plant not just the variety as it would help start up novices like me!

Hi Kelly, Thanks you for your lovely review. I smiled at cold frame envy. They are rather fabulous aren't they and they earn their keep here as you probably saw. On the point of labels, we are working on labelling all of our trees. It is a slow process as a) it's me doing it, b) particularly with the fruits trees, there is a fair bit of research to ensure the information on picking and storing is correct and c) sometimes the information about cultivars and so on has been lost in the mists of time and it takes a lot of digging to turn up the information. I hope eventually to have the collections, so the fruit trees, the irises, the peonies and the clematis labelled. For the other herbaceous perennials I'd say, if you want to know what something is, take a picture and ask a volunteer or staff member. I'm generally around and am happy to identify plants for visitors. Never worry about asking: part of the pleasure of gardening is sharing knowledge and experience. Hope you'll be able to visit again soon. Very best wishes, Tricia Harris, marketing and communications manager

Hi Katie, So glad you enjoyed your visit and glad your dog enjoyed the visit too. I think it might have been me in the kiosk as I am a pushover for a gorgeous dog and we pride ourselves on being dog friendly. The garden has a special atmosphere, a calmness that benefits us all in a world that is currently anything but. I'm so glad you were able to take some time out to enjoy it. I hope you'll be able to visit again and there will always be a biscuit at the kiosk for your dog. All best wishes, Tricia Harris, marketing and communications manager

We visited the gardens end of April and unfortunately they were still quite bare. There were a couple of really lovely flower beds, but on the whole the gardens were rather stark (see photos).

Looking at other reviews / photos, we must of visited at the wrong time of year, so will probably try to visit again over the summer months one year when there would be more to see. I was glad I had my Gardener's World 2-4-1 magazine coupon as otherwise at £9 each it is rather pricey, especially as you can only really spend around 1 hour here.

A useful paper map is given out when you buy your tickets.

I have reviewed the Vine House Cafe at the Walled Gardens separately and unfortunately can only give 2*. A lovely setting to sit for a drink but completely messed up our order, which meant I sat for 45 minutes while my friends ate before we could go somewhere to find food for me too (thankful for Thomas The Bakers on highstreet!), when we would obviously have preferred to all eat together.

Hi Laura, First of all thanks so much for visiting and for taking the time to write a thoughtful review. Respectfully I would say that there is plenty to look at in April but yes, the Kitchen Garden area is pretty bare as we don't start transplanting vegetable seedlings till late April, early May. It is just too cold. That area has more in now but won't look really full until late June. If you want a garden really fizzing with colour, you do need to come back in late July as that is when the Hot Border is really getting going, the Kitchen Garden is full and all the trees are in fruit. In spring, it is all about the bulbs and spring flowers. So the Long Border and the orchard will be full of daffodils and tulips, followed by fritillarias and Camassia. Blossom on the fruit trees, early flowering clematis and new growth throughout the garden bring colour and life, it's just not quite so full on as summer. Do come back and visit later in the year, I think you will find you can spend longer than an hour. Bring a book and laze under the trees, or bring friends and a picnic. Spend time relaxing and soak up the peace of this very special garden. We hope to see you again soon. All best wishes, Tricia Harris, marketing and communications manager

Beautiful, peaceful garden run by volunteers I think. We’d parked in the town Cleveland Way Car Park but The Walked Garden does have some parking which is useful for anyone with mobility issues. We don’t, so were happy to have made the pleasant very short walk from the car park. There are lots of different garden sections, loads of seats and a variety of interesting plants and small trees to admire. We enjoyed the sculpture exhibition spread around the garden and the backdrop of Helmsley Castle. Thank you Helmsley Walled Garden for your hard work. I can’t comment on the cafe as we didn’t use it but it looked to be very popular.

Dear Brecken, Thanks for your lovely review. You are absolutely right, the garden is maintained entirely by volunteers and its beauty is entirely due to their hard work. I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you'll bee able to visit again, maybe later in the year to enjoy the summer display. The Hot Border really gets into its stride from the end of July onwards. We are also hard at work developing some areas such as the Physic Garden and the White Garden. So I hope you'll be able tor return and enjoy a further visit. All best wishes, Tricia Harris, marketing and communications manager

A short stroll from the town centre and situated beneath the impressive castle ruins, this renovated walled garden is of impressive size and well worth a visit. There are also adjacent, independent craft shops and a very good conservatory-style tearoom that now boasts a sign with the splendid message that they “now have heating”!
