Was a disappointment , the gardens are basically just the park land apart from a small box hedge garden at the side of the house and at the other side of the house another small garden area.
Every where tells you , KEEP OFF THE GRASS. Or signs with PRIVATE on the gates etc.
I do understand that this is still a family home and the parkland is now run by Nature England but it shouldn't be advertised as Duncombe Park and Gardens as the only place you can go is in the woodland on the nature trails, or on the river walk which not signed very well after walking a couple of miles, no sign to say which way to go to get back to the exit.... It is £5 per adult to walk around the nature reserve. No where to get a coffee unless you pay £12 per person to get into the Birds of prey centre.

I was leaving the park with my dog recently. As I left, someone else came in with his dog ( off lead despite the presence of sheep and lambs). He allowed his dog to do it's business without cleaning it up, and when I suggested that he should he replied ' I make the rules. I'm the estate manager'. What an unbelievably rude and conceited thing to say and actually ridiculous. His dog does not produce saintly, sanctified poo that isn't a risk to human beings , livestock and other pets. Therefore, he needs to get off his high horse and realise that there are certain basic rules that we all need to follow for the good of everybody else.

Although the various attractions here, ie the Birds of Prey Centre, the House and Gardens are all closed at this time of year, the estate remains open to visitors and is a great place for a walk. We were staying in Helmsley for two days and on both mornings we walked into the estate and enjoyed invigorating strolls from the town, up the estate drive.

At the start of the walk you get splendid views of the castle on your right, with its adjoining walled garden, then a short while later you pass the impressive stately home on your left. There are various walks to enjoy here and we went to the top of the hill then dropped down to the river before retracing our steps, then taking a circular route through the woods back onto the main estate road.

On both mornings the weather was kind and we enjoyed those wonderfully crisp December mornings with the watery sun trying in vain to chase off the low-lying morning mist. What a great way to start a day.

On November 5th with a leaflet in hand we came to the birds of prey centre with my disabled son. The leaflet says closes December.
We passed many signs in Helmsley advertising it and drove up the lovely driveway to the centre.
The closest oarking spaces contained a Bentley and other high end cars with a firm NO PARKING for the rest of us and the disabled who need to be close. We got out our sons scooter and went to the gate to see a tatty piece of paper saying closed until next year Happy Christmas
Duncombe couldnt even be bothered to put closed signs in Helmsley or at the entrance and my Son was in tears. There were other cars arriving too to see the birds of prey also to be disappointed.
The arrogance of taking up the closest spaces which SHOULD be for the disabled, and the lack of customer care is terrible. The leaflet should say there may be a variant on closing times in which case we would have checked first by telephone or online. WHAT A LACK OF CUSTOMER CARE AND EMPATHY FOR THOSE LESS ABLE.

Amazing large gardens which was so beautiful to walk around. The house is not open but for £5 per adult you can visit the garden area at the back of the house. The gardens and outlook of house has been used in a number of film productions. Really worth a visit to wander around this beautiful gardens.

Visited this place today to find that the gardens are closed on a Saturday! Why? Surely a Saturday has got to be the most popular day of the week to visit a country park? This defies logic and left us feeling very let down! The people who run this establishment need to get their business heads on as they're missing out on valuable revenue needed to keep this national treasure maintained!

Situated in the centre of town, this is a lovely place to visit. Although the house, gardens and Birds of Prey centre were closed at the time of our visit, the grounds were open and on a bright, crisp December morning we had a most enjoyable walk through the estate, down to the river and round through the woods.

This is an ideal place for a stroll and, as an added bonus, the views of the castle from here are splendid.

Just to be aware that the, 'garden', essentially doesn't exist so don't waste your time trying to find it. No dogs in it anyway. Lovely, but very long, walks through woods though but unfriendly feel about the house which you must stay away from. Also very difficult to find by car. Sat nav takes you to a gate in a field a long way from the entrance to the Birds of Prey Centre, which is where you have to park.
