Wow! Breathtaking views and a stunning setting for Bolton Castle. Admission is very reasonably priced in my opinion considering this also includes the falconry display and other events going on throughout the day it's a bargain! Staff are helpful and welcoming. The tearoom is also reasonably priced and you can use the tearoom without paying for admission to the castle, an amazing selection of delicious cakes! Gluten free options as well. You do need to be able bodied to explore the gardens, castle and the tearoom as there are alot of uneven steps and spiral staircases. We even had a paranormal experience which my kids were very excited about. Definitely visit if you are in the area, it was one of the highlights of my holiday.

You must go! Driven passed many times, made the effort to visit on Monday. Really interesting. Beautiful location and views. More to look at than you might think! Friendly helpful and informative staff. Great falconry display. Lovely gardens. Nice cakes and scones in the cafe. Highly recommended 👌

Bolton castle was erected between 1379 and 1399 by order of sir Richard Scrope.
Garrisoned for the royalists, Bolton was besieged by parliamentarian forces in 1645. When eventually it surrendered the castle was slighted by Cromwell's men, leaving only the south west tower relatively undamaged.
In 1761 the north east tower, weakened by artillery fire almost a century before, collapsed during a great storm but the other three towers and the curtain walls survive almost to their original height.
*
Today visitors can discover virtually the whole of Bolton castle with the help of information panels and an outstanding guidebook.
The ground floor is occupied by service rooms : kitchens, stores, brew and malting houses, threshing floor, smithy and stables.
On the first floor you find the typical arrangement of medieval strongholds : great hall, great chamber, solar and chapel with viewing gallery.
Higher up in the towers are the bedrooms of the lord and lady, the nursery and the state rooms for important guests. Famously Mary queen of Scots was confined in Bolton castle for six months in 1568.
The rooms of the fortress are sparsely furnished but have a lot of atmosphere and are very picturesque.
The curtain walls are inaccessible but you can enjoy fine view from the top of the south west tower.

I have lived in a neighboring village for a number of years and today was the first time I have been inside and it was not a day wasted.
I reacquainted myself with a longbow thanks to your brilliant archer and enjoyed going around the castle and I found the information in the rooms very educational and enjoyed the tea room afterwards and we finished the day with a great display of birds of pray from the young lady falconer

First things first! The Cornish Pasties here are made by a lady (81 years old - originally from Cornwall) - they are the best pasties I’ve ever tasted. You must try them! Secondly the castle is brilliant Lots to see and do. Dave and his wife that run the Mary Queen of Scot’s room and the archery are super friendly and knowledgeable. Dave was lovely with our boy. Both went above and beyond.

A fantastic day, the tea room was welcoming with lovely snacks and a roaring log burner. The castle was amazing. The views were spectacular and Lee who led the archery, falconary, and boar, was so knowledgeable, entertaining and passionate about his work. He quite simply made our day.

Spent virtually the whole day there. The castle is impressive and interesting, with a good cafe too! However, the whole experience was greatly enhanced by the two Falconry displays; Archery displays and demo; and then the Wild Boar feeding session. All these activities were expertly supervised and conducted by Lee Anderson, who was simply superb with his expertise, skill and knowledge.
All in all a terrific day, well worth the very reasonable entrance fee.

Really enjoyable day made extra special by the Falconer/Archer/wild Boar expert Lee. His honest and genuine passion for all he does really shone through.

The views are amazing with lovely countryside. There’s only one tower that’s accessible, the rest is ruins. There is a lovely hall which they use as a coffee shop. The main thing I enjoyed was the birds of prey, unfortunately we couldn’t stay for the archery and the second show of the birds. But enjoyed the displays of the two owls. A Scops owl and a barn owl.

Hi can you still walk around outside the castle & take photos when it’s closed?
Skrevet 25. februar 2023
Bolton Castle / Castle Bolton is not the same place as Bolton Abbey.
They are 30 miles apart. Bolton Castle is near Redmire which is near Leyburn, Hawes and Wensley(dale). Bolton Abbey is near Skipton.

Have booked for 29th October. Online booking stated 10.00 - is this the required arrival time, is there a limit to how long we can stay? Thankyou
Skrevet 25. oktober 2020
No, we defo didn’t arrive at 10:00am
I think as long as you arrive well before closing time (we arrived at 2pm) then it’s fine.
I do think their wording online is confusing.
Hope this helps

We have our daughter’s wedding at the castle but my 92 year old mother cannot climb stairs. What sort of disabled access do you have?
Skrevet 31. desember 2018
Hi There is access to the ground floor areas through the portcullis. There are no steps however it is uneven and cobbled.
There are steps up to the wedding ceremony and wedding breakfast rooms. Due to the nature of the building there are no lifts up to these areas.
I hope this is if help to you.
Kindest regards
Jacqui

Unfortunately not, due to birds of prey in the garden
Skrevet 13. april 2018
Hi, I am thinking of visiting here with my son and 82 year old mum. she is ok at walking but not up hills. Is the car park near to the castle or is it a bit of a climb. Thanks.
Skrevet 31. mai 2015
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in visiting Bolton Castle with your family. The Castle is a slight walk downhill from the car park however you could drop your mum off at the front door if you wished. The only issue is there are a lot of stairs inside the Castle which I imagine she might struggle with if she is not good with hills. There is a flight of stairs to get up to the tea room, shop and admissions area and then the rest of the castle is situated on 5 levels with spiral stairs in between. The garden is accessible via sloped grassed paths so that might be easier for her. Our full access statement is available on the website which gives you more details or you could email me at the castle and I can send you it if that is easier for you.
Kind Regards,
Katie

Is it legal to park on the roads in the village of Castle Bolton? I was told that it is a private estate, but this did not seem to backed up by any signage, or info on the internet.
Thanks
Skrevet 8. april 2015
Thank you for your enquiry,
The roads in the village are public highways and are not privately owned. My understanding is that it would not be illegal to park on them, unless it was causing an obstruction. However the village roads are only single track and frequently used by tractors, large machinery, buses and when required Emergency Services, so it would almost certainly constitute an obstruction. For more information, please contact the Highways Agency. Also, please bear in mind that members of the village take great care of the green so please avoid driving onto it, even with just two wheels."
The parking fee at Bolton Castle is fully refundable on payment of admission to the Castle or Gardens.Or if you are not planning to visit the castle, but walk or cycle in the area, it may be better to use the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority car park at Aysgarth Falls.
I hope this is helpful.
