The Ribblehead viaduct what an amazing piece of Victorian architecture and construction absolutely Beautiful complemented by the wonderful surrounding moors made even better for the grandchildren when they saw a train crossing it. A must for all to see

If you like your manmade structures / rail bridges, then this is a must.
You can see it clearly from the road, but plenty of roadside parking near the pub and then it is a short walk down to the structure.
It can also include a lovely 4 mile circular walk, which takes in the viaduct and the lovely surrounding countryside.
The Station Inn is also a lovely place to eat / drink.
Highly Recommended.

Construction began in late 1869. It necessitated a large workforce, up to 2,300 men, most of whom lived in shanty towns set up near its base. Over 100 men lost their lives during its construction.

It's not often that something man made looks so natural and elegant in the environment, but this does. A great feat of engineering that is easily accessed from the road (which most people park on) . You can walk under it and up past it to walk alongside the track for a while. Also lovely if you like photography.

We stopped here on our way back to Lincoln from the Lake District! Admittedly we didn’t spend long here maybe 30-45 minutes but if you’re passing it’s definitely worth a visit. It’s so majestic and seems so large when you’re standing under it! A fine example of architecture.

This is a beautiful viaduct, the work that must have gone into building is mind blowing.
I went for a run underneath it today and even though the weather was dull it was still a spectacular sight.
Just be careful when you see lots of people loitering to see the steam train “coming over anytime soon”….. I waited an hour this afternoon and had to give up before it materialised (I was in running gear so wasn’t dressed for standing still 🤣) turns out it had been delayed for various reasons - ahh well, I’ll make sure I’m better dressed for a wait next time.

We were on a group tour to see the Tall Ships in Hartlepool. One of our visits was to the viaduct. The nearby pub had a great view from the outside and we were able to see a DMU crossing

Are you able to get on top with the rails? Or walk along side it, Obviously during a time when no trains are actively due, scouting photography locations and I feel I could get some amazing landscape and portrait shots up top.

I stopped in a little lay by, I think there were a few and got a great view. There is also a little carpark with a bunch of spaces just a little further on ( I can’t recall which direction I was travelling in) and we could then leave the car, cross the road and walk across closer to it.

Originally there were two tracks over the viaduct, but during repair and reconstruction this has been reduced to a single track, reverting to double at each end of the structure. Ruth.

Hi all,
As a keen photographer, I would love to get photo of a steam train over this stunning location.
Is there some kind of website where you can track when the train leaves its station or stops on the way to this viaduct?
And does anyone know of the best location/route to get there?

Type in Settle to Carlisle steam train into google and it'll give you the website and you can find all the information on there. You can get right up near the track if you walk up the hill at the viaduct, you can get some great views for photography. Good luck.
